Histological and computed tomographic evaluation of a parasitic conjoined twin in hybrid catfish (Ictalurus punctatus [Rafinesque] X Ictalurus furcatus [Lesueur])

The pivotal protein profile between the conjoined twins and normal mosquitofish Gambusia affinis based on iTRAQ proteomic analysis

The fish abnormal embryonic development has attracted public attention in the recent few years. In this study, an iTRAQ proteomic analysis of mosquitofish between conjoined twins and normal fishes is applied for the first time by using the genome database of mosquitofish. Three thousand four hundred ninety proteins were identified with 304 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs). One hundred six differentially upregulated proteins (DUPs) and 198 differentially downregulated proteins (DDPs) were identified between the conjoined twins and normal mosquitofish groups. Notably, the proteins related to lipid and proteolysis were the important GO terms for the DUPs while response to light stimulus and response to radiation were the most enriched GO terms for the DDPs. The proteins related to lysosome, apoptosis, autophagy, and phagosome were the functional KEGG pathway for the DUPs while most of the pathways were related to cardiovascular for the DDPs. This study expatiated a pivotal protein profile between the conjoined twins and normal mosquitofish which can provide a conference for fish embryonic development.

First report of the occurrence and different types of conjoined twins in common whitefish Coregonus maraena larvae originating from the Baltic Sea

This paper describes for the first time various forms of conjoined twins in the common whitefish Coregonus maraena originating from the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea. The occurrence of conjoined twins was observed during the hatching of whitefish under controlled conditions. Two types of twins were identified: symmetric (parapagus) and asymmetric (parasitic form). The percentage of conjoined twins among the whitefish did not exceed 0.01% of the hatched larvae. The forms of twins observed in this study were similar to conjoined twins occurring among humans. One main type, parapagus, was identified in the group of symmetric twins with 3 subtypes: diprosopus parapagus, dicephalic parapagus and dithoracic parapagus. In its parasitic form, the parasitic twin occurred as a 'cyclops' or just as an eye growing out of the other twin's head. We conclude that fish, as well as their fertilised eggs, can be used as a model system to observe how such twins are joined in humans because of the similarity with conjoined twins occurring in humans. Because of internal fertilisation in fish, as well as the size and transparency of egg cells in these animals, it is possible to observe the process of fertilisation, cell division and formation of an embryo and subsequently of twins, as a model for humans.

Salmonid fish: model organisms to study cardiovascular morphogenesis in conjoined twins?

Background

There is a gap in knowledge regarding the cardiovascular system in fish conjoined twins, and regarding the cardiovascular morphogenesis of conjoined twins in general. We examined the cardiovascular system in a pair of fully developed ventrally conjoined salmonid twins (45.5 g body weight), and the arrangement of the blood vessels during early development in ventrally conjoined yolk sac larvae salmonid twins (<0.5 g body weight).

Results

In the fully developed twins, one twin was normal, while the other was small and severely malformed. The mouth of the small twin was blocked, inhibiting respiration and feeding. Both twins had hearts, but these were connected through a common circulatory system. They were joined by the following blood vessels: (i) arteria iliaca running from arteria caudalis of the large twin to the kidney of the small twin; (ii) arteria subclavia running from aorta dorsalis of the large twin to aorta dorsalis of the small twin; (iii) vena hepatica running from the liver of the small twin into the sinus venosus of the large twin. Among the yolk sac larvae twins investigated, distinct vascular connections were found in some individuals through a joined v. vitellina hepatica.

Conclusions

Ventrally conjoined fish twins can develop cardiovascular connections during early development, enabling a normal superior twin to supply a malfunctioning twin with oxygen and nutrients. Since the yolk sac in salmonids is transparent, twinning in salmonids may be a useful model in which to study cardiovascular morphogenesis in conjoined twins.
