Encapsulation of Bioactive Compounds for Food and Agricultural Applications

This review presents an updated scenario of findings and evolutions of encapsulation of bioactive compounds for food and agricultural applications. Many polymers have been reported as encapsulated agents, such as sodium alginate, gum Arabic, chitosan, cellulose and carboxymethylcellulose, pectin, Shellac, xanthan gum, zein, pullulan, maltodextrin, whey protein, galactomannan, modified starch, polycaprolactone, and sodium caseinate. The main encapsulation methods investigated in the study include both physical and chemical ones, such as freeze-drying, spray-drying, extrusion, coacervation, complexation, and supercritical anti-solvent drying. Consequently, in the food area, bioactive peptides, vitamins, essential oils, caffeine, plant extracts, fatty acids, flavonoids, carotenoids, and terpenes are the main compounds encapsulated. In the agricultural area, essential oils, lipids, phytotoxins, medicines, vaccines, hemoglobin, and microbial metabolites are the main compounds encapsulated. Most scientific investigations have one or more objectives, such as to improve the stability of formulated systems, increase the release time, retain and protect active properties, reduce lipid oxidation, maintain organoleptic properties, and present bioactivities even in extreme thermal, radiation, and pH conditions. Considering the increasing worldwide interest for biomolecules in modern and sustainable agriculture, encapsulation can be efficient for the formulation of biofungicides, biopesticides, bioherbicides, and biofertilizers. With this review, it is inferred that the current scenario indicates evolutions in the production methods by increasing the scales and the techno-economic feasibilities. The Technology Readiness Level (TRL) for most of the encapsulation methods is going beyond TRL 6, in which the knowledge gathered allows for having a functional prototype or a representative model of the encapsulation technologies presented in this review.

High-sodium maltobionate production by immobilized Zymomonas mobilis cells in polyurethane

The purpose of this study was the production of maltobionic acid, in the form of sodium maltobionate, by Z. mobilis cells immobilized in polyurethane. The in situ immobilized system (0.125-0.35 mm) was composed of 7 g polyol, 3.5 g isocyanate, 0.02 g silicone, and 7 g Z. mobilis cell, at the concentration of 210 g/L. The bioconversion of maltose to sodium maltobionate was performed with different cell concentrations (7.0-9.0 g_imobilized/L_{reaction_medium}), temperature (30.54-47.46 °C), pH (5.55-7.25), and substrate concentration (0.7-1.3 mol/L). The stability of the immobilized system was evaluated for 24 h bioconversion cycles and storage of 6 months. The maximum concentration of sodium maltobionate was 648.61 mmol/L in 34.34 h process (8.5 g_{dry_cell}/L_{reaction_medium}) at 39 °C and pH 6.30. The immobilized system showed stability for 19 successive operational cycles of 24 h bioconversion and 6 months of storage, at 4 °C or 22 °C.

Immobilization of Candida rugosa lipase on magnetic chitosan beads and application in flavor esters synthesis

In this work, magnetic chitosan (MCH) beads were synthesized by phase-inversion method, and grafted with polydopamine (PDA) and then used for direct immobilization of Candida rugosa lipase by Schiff base reaction. The amount of immobilized enzyme and the retained activity were found to be 47.3 mg/g and 72.8%, respectively, at pH 7.0, and at 25 °C. The apparent Km (9.7 mmol/L), and Vmax (384 U/mg) values of the immobilized lipase were significantly changed compared to the free lipase. The MCH@PDA-lipase was better thermal and storage stability at different temperatures than those of the free lipase. In hexane medium, the esterification reaction results showed that the maximum conversions of isoamylalcohol and isopentyl alcohol to isoamyl acetate and isopentyl acetate using the MCH@PDA-lipase were found to be 98.4 ± 1.3% and 73.7 ± 0.7%, respectively. These results showed that the MCH@PDA-lipase can be used as an operative immobilized enzyme system for many biotechnological applications.

Thermodynamic and Kinetic Study on the Catalysis of Isoamyl Acetate by a Cation-Exchange Resin in an Intensified Fixed-Bed Reactor

Kinetics and thermodynamics of esterification by a cation-exchange resin in an intensified fixed-bed reactor was studied systematically. The resin type, catalyst loading, volume flow rate, initial molar ratio, temperature, and catalyst reusability were studied and optimized. The nonideality of the reaction system was corrected by the UNIFAC group contribution method. The Δ_r H ⁰, Δ_r S ⁰, and Δ_r G ⁰ of the reaction were acquired by two methods. The pseudo-homogeneous (PH) model and the Langmuir-Hinshelwood-Hougen-Watson (LHHW) model were adopted to simulate the kinetic process. The result indicated that the LHHW model was better suited to simulate the kinetic process than the PH model.
