Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity may increase colorectal cancer (CRC) risk through mechanisms of increased inflammation. Although BMI is the most used adiposity indicator, it may less accurately measure adiposity in Black populations. Herein, we investigate associations between BMI, low albumin as an inflammation biomarker, and CRC risk in a racially diverse cohort. METHODS Participant data arise from 71,141 participants of the Southern Community Cohort Study, including 724 incident CRC cases. Within the cohort, 69% are Black. Blood serum albumin concentrations, from samples taken at enrollment, were available for 235 cases and 567 controls. Controls matched by age, sex, and race were selected through incidence density sampling. Cox proportional hazards calculated BMI and CRC risk associations (hazard ratios [HRs]; 95% confidence intervals [CIs]. Conditional logistic regression calculated albumin and CRC risk associations (odds ratios [ORs]; 95%CIs). RESULTS Underweight, but not overweight or obese, compared to normal BMI was associated with increased CRC risk (HR:1.75, 95%CI:1.00-3.09). Each standard deviation increase of albumin was associated with decreased CRC risk, particularly for those who self-identified as non-Hispanic Black (OR: 0.56, 95%CI:0.34-0.91), or female (OR:0.54, 95%CI:0.30-0.98), but there was no evidence for interaction by these variables (p-interactions > 0.05). Moreover, albumin concentration was lower in Black than White participants. Mediation analysis suggested that the relation between albumin and CRC was not mediated by BMI. CONCLUSIONS Null associations of overweight/obesity with CRC risk demonstrates limited utility of BMI, especially among Black populations. Low albumin may indicate CRC risk. In Black individuals, albumin may better predict adiposity related risks than BMI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Waist circumference (WC), calf circumference (CC), and body mass index (BMI) have been independently linked to mortality. However, it's not yet clear how the waist-calf circumference ratio (WCR) relates to mortality. This study aims to investigate the relationship between WCR, WC, CC, and BMI with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in older adults. METHODS In the 2014 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, 4627 participants aged 65 years and older were included, and they were subsequently followed up in 2018. Cox proportional hazards models were utilized to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all-cause and cause-specific mortality, based on WCR, WC, CC, and BMI. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 3.4 years, 1671 deaths (36.1%) occurred. Compared to the second quartile of WCR, the highest quartile had a higher risk of mortality from all causes (HR 1.42, 95%CI 1.24-1.64), cardiovascular disease (CVD) (HR 1.88, 95%CI 1.38-2.56), and other causes (HR 1.37, 95%CI 1.15-1.63). The first and fourth quartiles of WC had HRs of 2.19 (1.00-4.79) and 2.69 (1.23-5.89), respectively, for cancer mortality. The highest quartile of CC was associated with a lower risk of all-cause and other-cause mortality, whereas the lowest quartile was associated with a higher risk of all-cause, CVD, and other-cause mortality compared to the second CC quartile. Additionally, the lowest quartile of BMI was associated with a higher risk of all-cause and respiratory disease mortality. Interaction analyses showed that the effects of CC on all-cause and CVD mortality were more pronounced in adults aged ≥ 80 years (P-interaction < .05). CONCLUSIONS Higher WCR and lower CC increased the risk of all-cause, CVD, and other-cause mortality. Lower BMI was associated with higher all-cause and respiratory disease mortality risk, while WC only predicted cancer mortality.

The Association of Waist Circumference with the Prevalence and Survival of Digestive Tract Cancer in US Adults: A Population Study Based on Machine Learning Methods. Abstract
Aims This paper aims to investigate the relationship of waist circumference (WC) with digestive tract cancer morbidity and mortality. Methods Based on the data from a nationally representative US population survey, we summarized the prevalence of digestive tract cancer and all-cause mortality of cancer patients across WC quartiles. Adjusted logistic regression and restricted spline curve were used to analyze WC and the prevalence of digestive tract cancer. Moreover, Cox regression and the Kaplan-Meier curve were applied to investigate the association of WC with all-cause mortality. We also attempted to make a model to predict cancer happening. Results This paper included a total of 34,041 participants, with digestive tract cancer observed in 265 (0.7%) individuals. WC was positively associated with digestive tract cancer morbidity after full adjustment of covariates (OR: 1.72 and 95% CI: 1.41-2.10). Also, individuals in the highest WC group had a higher risk of digestive tract cancer (Q4, OR: 2.71 and 95% CI: 1.48-5.00). Moreover, no significant association was observed in upper digestive cancer, and WC was associated with a longer survival time once diagnosed (hazard ratio (HR): 0.50 and 95% CI: 0.28-0.92). Finally, the model we made proved to be effective. Conclusion High WC is a risk factor for digestive tract cancer with or without adjusting for body mass index, especially those located in the lower digestive tract. However, once digestive tract cancer has been diagnosed, patients with higher WC showed better survival outcomes. Moreover, machine learning methods can be used to predict digestive tract cancer risk in the future.

Abstract
Simple Summary While obesity is a well-known risk factor for the development of various types of cancer, conflicting results have been reported concerning the relationship between obesity and the risk of glioma. To date, no studies have evaluated the association between obesity and risk of glioma development in Eastern Asian populations, who usually have greater fat mass and less muscle and are more likely to develop several metabolic diseases than Western populations of the same body mass index (BMI) category. In this nationwide population-based study, we suggest, for the first time, positive associations of general and central obesity with the risk of glioma development. In addition, we demonstrate a stronger association between abdominal obesity and the risk of glioma development than BMI and the risk of glioma development. Abstract The association between obesity and the risk of glioma remains unclear. We sought to evaluate the potential association between general and abdominal obesity and the risk of glioma based on a nationwide population-based cohort study of Koreans. Using data from the Korean National Health Insurance System cohort, 6,833,744 people older than 20 years who underwent regular national health examination in both 2009 and 2011 were followed until the end of 2017. We documented 4771 glioma cases based on an ICD-10 code of C71 during the median follow-up period of 7.30 years. Individuals with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25.0 kg/m2 were at significantly higher risk of developing glioma than those with a BMI < 25.0 kg/m2 (HR 1.08 CI 1.02–1.15). Individuals with a waist circumference (WC) ≥ 90 cm (males)/85 cm (females) also had a significantly higher risk of glioma than those with a WC < 90 cm (males)/85 cm (females) (HR 1.16 CI 1.09–1.24). In the group with a BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m2, individuals with abdominal obesity were at significantly higher risk of developing glioma (HR 1.18 CI 1.09–1.27) than those without abdominal obesity. The role of abdominal obesity in this association was stronger in women than in men. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration that obese people may be at higher risk of glioma, especially centrally obese people from an Asian population with a BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m2. Loss of visceral fat in people with abdominal obesity may reduce their risk of developing glioma.
