The estimated mechanical advantage of the prosimian ankle joint musculature, and implications for locomotor adaptation

Hip medial rotator action of gluteus medius in Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) and implications to adaptive significance for quadrupedal walking in primates

The gluteus medius (GM) muscle in quadrupedal primates has long been thought to mainly act as a hip extensor. However, previous reports argue that it may be a prime hip medial rotator and functions to rotate the pelvis in the horizontal plane, suggesting the functional differentiation between the GM and other hip extensors as hamstrings. In this study, we aim to quantify the muscle actions of the GM and hamstrings using muscle moment arm lengths and discuss the functional differentiation among hip extensors. Muscle attachment sites of eight specimens of Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) were digitized, and musculoskeletal models were constructed. Flexor-extensor, abductor-adductor, and medial-lateral rotator moment arms were calculated as the models were moved following the experimentally acquired kinematic data during walking on a pole substrate. Using electromyography, we also recorded the pattern of muscle activation. The GM showed a larger medial rotator moment arm length than the extensor moment arm length when it was activated, suggesting this muscle acts mainly as a hip medial rotator rather than as a hip extensor. The medial rotator action of the GM in the early support phase may rotate the pelvis in the horizontal plane and function to help contralateral forelimb reaching as a previous study suggested and facilitate contralateral hindlimb swinging to place the foot near the ipsilateral forelimb's hand.

The effects of footplate stiffness on push-off power when walking with posterior leaf spring ankle-foot orthoses

BACKGROUND

Many studies on ankle-foot orthoses investigated the optimal stiffness around the ankle, while the effect of footplate stiffness has been largely ignored. This study investigated the effects of ankle-foot orthosis footplate stiffness on ankle-foot push-off power during walking in able-bodied persons.

METHODS

Twelve healthy participants walked at a fixed speed (1.25 m·s^-1) on an instrumented treadmill in four conditions: shod and with a posterior leaf-spring orthosis with a flexible, stiff or rigid footplate. For each trial, ankle kinematics and kinetics were averaged over one-minute walking. Separate contributions of the ankle joint complex and distal hindfoot to total ankle-foot power and work were calculated using a deformable foot model.

FINDINGS

Peak ankle joint power was significantly higher with the rigid footplate compared to the flexible and stiff footplate and not different from shod walking. The stiff footplate increased peak hindfoot power compared to the flexible and rigid footplate and shod walking. Total ankle-foot power showed a significant increase with increasing footplate stiffness, where walking with the rigid footplate was comparable to shod walking. Similar effects were found for positive mechanical work.

INTERPRETATION

A rigid footplate increases the lever of the foot, resulting in an increased ankle moment and energy storage and release of the orthosis' posterior leaf-spring as reflected in higher ankle joint power. This effect dominates the power generation of the foot, which was highest with the intermediate footplate stiffness. Future studies should focus on how tuning footplate stiffness could contribute to optimizing ankle-foot orthosis efficacy in clinical populations.

Foot structure is correlated with performance in a single-joint jumping task

Variability in musculoskeletal structure has the potential to influence locomotor function. It has been shown, for example, that sprinters have smaller Achilles tendon moment arms and longer toes than non-sprinters, and toe length has been found to correlate with toe flexor work in running humans. These findings suggest that interindividual variation in human foot structure allows for function that is adapted to various motor tasks. The purpose of this study was to test for correlations between foot anthropometry and single-joint maximal-height jumping performance. Ten male subjects performed static jumps using only their ankles for propulsion. Several anthropometric measures were taken. Bivariate correlation analyses were performed between all anthropometric variables and the average jump height for each subject. Results showed that the best jumpers had longer lateral heel lengths (r=0.871; p=0.001) and longer toes (r=0.712; p=0.021). None of the other anthropometric variables (stature, mass, lower extremity lengths) measured were found to correlate significantly with jump height. A factor analysis was performed to investigate whether some underlying feature related to body stature could explain jumping performance. Taller subjects did not necessarily jump higher. Specific variations in foot structure, unrelated to other general stature measures, were associated with performance in this single-joint jumping task.
