Evaluation of the effects of 10% and 30% gluconolactone chemical peel on sebum, pH, and TEWL

BACKGROUND

Gluconolactone (GLA) exhibits antioxidant and moisturizing effects. It also presents soothing effects, protects elastin fibers from UV-induced degradation, and improves the function of the skin barrier.

AIMS

Evaluation of skin parameters such as pH, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), sebum levels before, during, and after a series of applications of 10% and 30% GLA chemical peel in a split-face model.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study involved 16 female subjects. Three split-face procedures were performed using two concentrations of GLA solution applied on two sides of the face. The skin parameters were measured before treatments and 7 days after the last procedure at four measurement sites on either side of the face, that is, on the forehead, around the eye, on the cheek, and on the nose wing.

RESULTS

Measurement of sebum demonstrated some statistically significant changes between sebum levels in the cheeks after a series of treatments. The pH measurement showed that the pH value was reduced after each treatment at all measurement points. The level of TEWL after treatments was significantly lower around the eyes, on the left forehead, and on the right cheek. There were no significant differences between the use of different concentrations of the GLA solution.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of the study show that GLA has a significant influence on lowering skin pH and TEWL. GLA also has seboregulatory properties.

Production of lactobionic acid at high salt concentrations by Acinetobacter halotolerans isolated from seaside soil

A lactobionic acid (LBA)-producing bacterium isolated from seaside soils was identified as Acinetobacter halotolerans and designated as strain KRICT-1. We determined whether KRICT-1 can produce LBA at high salt concentrations. The KRICT-1 strain grew on a nutrient broth (NB) agar plate with up to 7.0% NaCl, indicating high NaCl tolerance, and 30 °C was the optimum growth temperature for LBA production. We produced LBA using the KRICT-1 strain in NB medium containing various concentrations of NaCl. While Pseudomonas taetrolens, an efficient LBA-producing bacterium, could produce LBA with up to 5.5% NaCl, the KRICT-1 strain could produce LBA at up to 7.0% NaCl and produced more LBA than P. taetrolens with over 5.5% NaCl. We produced LBA using NB medium containing 7.0% NaCl by batch fermentation of the KRICT-1 strain in a 5 L fermenter. The LBA production titer and productivity of the KRICT-1 strain were 32.1 g/L and 0.22 g/L/h, respectively, which were approximately 1.35- and 1.38-fold higher than those (23.7 g/L and 0.16 g/L/h) obtained from flask culture. Additionally, quinoprotein glucose dehydrogenase is an LBA-producing enzyme in A. halotolerans. We demonstrated that the A. halotolerans KRICT-1 strain is appropriate for LBA production at high salt concentrations.

Corneometric evaluation of skin moisture after application of 10% and 30% gluconolactone

BACKGROUND

Dry skin, caused by improper care or genetic conditions, can affect people of all ages. Skin hydration is determined its lipid content, which inhibits water loss from the epidermis, as well as other substances such as polyhydroxy acids and gluconolactone that can bind water. The aim of this study was to evaluate skin hydration after the application of 10% and 30% gluconolactone solution in a split face model.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Sixteen healthy women were qualified for the study. Three split face treatments were performed, with 10% and 30% gluconolactone solution applied to two sides of the face. Skin moisture was measured before each treatment and a week after the last treatment at three measurement sites on either side of the face, that is, on the forehead, around the eye and on the cheek.

RESULTS

Corneometric measurements showed a significant increase in facial skin hydration after gluconolactone treatment. No significant differences were observed between the application of 10% and 30% solution.

CONCLUSION

Gluconolactone is a moisturizing substance which works well in dry skin care.

Anatomical site variation of water content in human skin measured by the Epsilon: A pilot study

Background

This pilot study aimed to investigate the anatomical site variation of water content of the stratum corneum (SC) on the body by measuring skin capacitance with the Epsilon, a new generation corneometer with multiple sensors. Secondly, values of the Epsilon were compared to values measured by conventional single sensor corneometers.

Methods

The hydration status of SC was measured in 15 healthy Caucasian volunteers with the Epsilon at five body sites (cheek, lower forearm, mid‐calf, lower back and abdomen). Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) was measured with the Aquaflux to get more insight into the condition of the skin barrier. A literature search was performed to compare Epsilon values with conventional corneometers.

Results

The tested anatomical locations showed significant differences in water content (P < 0.001) with large interindividual variations; highest values were found in the cheek (11.64ε) and lowest values in the mid‐calf (4.43ε). No correlation between water content and TEWL was found. In general, Epsilon values were lower compared to values of conventional corneometers, with a similar trend.

Conclusion

This pilot study showed significant variations in water content at different skin locations measured by the Epsilon. Moreover, the Epsilon measured consistent lower values compared to single sensor corneometers. Further validation of the device is recommended.
