Abstract
Acne-associated scarring and dyspigmentation (ie, erythema, hyperpigmentation) are common sequelae with significant psychosocial impact, but little is known about what measures are most often used to assess these outcomes. This scoping review evaluates the use of current patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and clinician-reported outcome measures (ClinROMs) for acne scars and dyspigmentation. For scars, 7 PROMs and 18 ClinROMs were used, with most being unvalidated. Similarly, for dyspigmentation, 4 PROMs and 8 ClinROMs were identified, but no validated PROMs were identified. These results highlight reliance on unvalidated measures in research and clinical trials and suggest the need for developing high-quality validated measures, particularly PROMs, to improve research quality and develop better treatments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, commonly resulting in acne scars. Treating acne scars remains a significant challenge in dermatology. With advancements in laser technology, its clinical use for treating acne scars has been increasing annually. However, bibliometric analysis on laser treatment for acne scars is lacking. This study aims to use bibliometrics to comprehensively understand the development trends and research hotspots in laser treatment for acne scars. METHODS Using "acne scar" and "laser" as search terms, literature on laser treatment of acne scars from 2014 to 2024 was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database. The literature data were visualized using VOSviewers, CiteSpace, and R software, generating maps of countries, research institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords. RESULTS The analysis included 536 articles from 46 countries, with the United States and China leading in publications. Publications focusing on laser treatment of acne scars exhibit a consistent growth trend annually. Key research institutions include Mahidol University in Thailand, Cairo University in Egypt, and Hallym University in South Korea. The "Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology" had the highest number of articles in this field, while "Dermatologic Surgery" was the most cited publication. These publications involved contributions from 2135 authors, with Professor Manuskiatti Woraphong from Mahidol University in Thailand being the most prolific author in this field. Research on the efficacy of laser treatment for acne scars is a major focus in this field. Among the different types of lasers, CO2 lasers are the most commonly used. Emerging research focuses include therapies such as platelet-rich plasma, picosecond laser, trichloroacetic acid, and burn scar. CONCLUSIONS Treatment efficacy is the primary focus of research in the field of laser treatment for acne scars. Platelet-rich plasma, and novel picosecond lasers, have emerged as hot topics and trends in this research field. However, it is important to note that the impact factors of journals publishing in this field are currently low. Therefore, clinicians must consider and explore strategies for publishing high-quality clinical research in the future.

Abstract
Multiple mode procedures (MMP) of fractional CO2 laser provide higher efficacy and shorter downtime in treating acne scars, compared to traditional fractional CO2 laser therapy. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of modified MMP integrated with fractional microneedle radiofrequency (FMR), ultra-pulse CO2 laser and fractional CO2 laser in treating acne scars. A retrospective analysis of 162 acne scar patients treated with MMP or modified MMP was conducted. Acne scars were evaluated using the Echelle d'Evaluation Clinique des Cicatrices d'Acné (ECCA) grading scale, modified Manchester Scar Scale (mMSS), and Global Assessment Scale (GAS). Baseline variables were balanced with propensity score matching (PSM) to improve the comparability of treatment effectiveness and safety between groups. Among 162 patients with facial acne scars, 68 were treated with modified MMP and 94 with traditional MMP. After PSM, both groups had 55 patients with comparable baseline characteristics (P > 0.05). The ECCA score decreased more significantly in the modified MMP group (60%±11%) than in the MMP group (45%±16.6%, P < 0.001). The modified MMP group also had higher mMSS color score (2.6 ± 0.7 vs. 2.1 ± 0.9, P = 0.005), greater reduction in pore size and skin laxity (P < 0.001), shorter postoperative erythema duration (22.2 ± 4.0 vs. 31.3 ± 3.7 days, P < 0.001), but higher pain scores (Visual Analogue Scale, VAS: 6.7 ± 1.6 vs. 3.8 ± 0.8, P < 0.001). Modified MMP is more effective than traditional MMP in treating acne scars, especially for patients with large pores and skin laxity.

Abstract
PURPOSE Fractional microneedle radiofrequency (FMR) systems are used to treat inflammatory acne and scarring. Nonetheless, few controlled studies have combined this treatment with the traditional ablative fractional laser (AFL). We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of the combination of FMR and AFL versus AFL alone in treating acne and acne scars. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this 20-week, randomized, split-face study, 23 Korean patients with facial acne and acne scars underwent FMR and AFL treatments. One half of each patient's face was randomly assigned to receive FMR+AFL, whereas the other half received AFL alone. Treatments were administered in three consecutive sessions at 4-week intervals. This study investigated the severity of inflammatory acne, acne scars, individual lesion counts, depressed scar volumes, as well as patient and physician satisfaction. In addition, five patients underwent skin biopsy, and sebum output was measured. RESULTS The FMR+AFL treatment demonstrated superior efficacy compared to AFL alone in terms of inflammatory acne and acne scar grading, lesion counts, and subjective satisfaction. The side effects were minimal and well-tolerated in both groups. Immunohistochemical findings from skin biopsy samples revealed that the application of FMR+AFL could induce an inhibitory effect on sebum secretion at the molecular level. CONCLUSION FMR combined with AFL is a well-tolerated and effective treatment modality for inflammatory acne and acne scarring.

Abstract
Traumatic scar is a disease that affected approximately tens of millions of patients worldwide. According to the histological and morphological properties of scars, the traumatic scar typically includes superficial scar, atrophic scar, hypertrophic scar, and keloid. Its formation is a natural consequence of wound healing, regardless of whether the wound was caused by trauma or surgery. However, the production of scars has considerable impacts on the physical and mental health of patients, even causing substantial aesthetic and functional impairments. Prevention or early treatment of scars is the most suitable therapeutic method, including surgical and non-surgical procedures; nevertheless, the benefits of non-operative therapies for scars are quite limited, and surgical treatments are always hard to achieve satisfying outcomes. Through the application of innovative technologies such as lasers, intense pulsed light, and radiofrequency, significant progress has been made in the treatment of traumatic scars. This review highlights the current advancements of photoelectric therapy for the prevention and treatment of various traumatic scars, which may throw light on innovative therapeutic options for scar therapies.

Abstract
Acne vulgaris is one of the most common skin disorders worldwide. It typically affects skin areas with a high density of sebaceous glands such as the face, upper arms, chest, and/or back. Historically, the majority of research efforts have focused on facial acne vulgaris, even though approximately half of patients with facial lesions demonstrate truncal involvement. Truncal acne vulgaris is challenging to treat and poses a significant psychosocial burden on patients. Despite these characteristics, studies specifically examining truncal acne vulgaris are limited, with treatment guidelines largely derived from facial protocols. Therefore, truncal acne remains an understudied clinical problem. Here, we provide a clinically focused review on the epidemiology, evaluation, and available treatment options for truncal acne vulgaris. In doing so, we highlight knowledge gaps with the goal of spurring further investigation into the management of truncal acne vulgaris.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atrophic acne scars (AAS) impact the aesthetic appearance, inducing social and psychological problems. Effective and safe therapy for AAS is urgently needed now. Microneedling fractional radiofrequency (MFRF) has emerged as a minimal invasive alteration for treating AAS lately, while the existing data on Chinese population was few. AIMS We aimed to explore the effectivity and safety of MFRF in Chinese patients with facial AAS and analyze the response of different subtypes to MFRF treatment. METHODS We conducted a retrospective analysis using data from medical records and clinical photographs of 40 Chinese patients with AAS with Fitzpatrick skin type III-IV, all of them had received 3 MFRF treatments with 1-month intervals and were followed up 3 months after the last treatment. The clinical severity was assessed through échelle d'évaluation clinique des cicatrices d'acné (ECCA) score at each visit. Clinical photographs were taken by VISIA. Patients were asked to evaluate their satisfaction of the treatment using a 5-point Likert scale at the last visit. RESULTS ECCA score decreased more than a half at the last visit based on the baseline. Among the three types of AAS, the M-shaped scars respond most quickly to MFRF and the U-shaped scars improved the most after 3 months follow-up. A significant improvement was seen in clinical appearance, parallel to the change of ECCA, indicating the remarkable improvement of AAS after the MFRF treatment. Concomitant active acne was controlled along with the improvement of AAS. Statistics from VISIA showed excellent improvement in pores and texture as well. Side effects including pain and erythema were transient and mild. The number of MFRF treatment sessions was positively associated with the degree of improvement. Of the total 39 patients who had given a score of satisfaction, more than 89% (35 patients) were very satisfied or satisfied with the outcome. CONCLUSIONS To sum up, our study reveals that MFRF provides high efficiency in treating Chinese AAS patients with high satisfaction and low risk of adverse effects. M-shaped scars are the most sensitive type to the treatment, but the U-shaped scars improve most at the last visit. The simultaneous minimization of pores and improvement of skin texture imply the increased collagen stimulated by MFRF. Regular MFRF should be considered a good choice in treating AAS.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Combination radiofrequency (RF) microneedling with fractional ablative carbon dioxide (CO2 ) laser is a new approach for acne scar treatment. AIMS (1) to systematically review the literature on the safety and effectiveness of this treatment for acne scarring; (2) to assess safety and effectiveness in a 2-center case series. METHODS Systematic review: Articles that assessed the safety and effectiveness of combination RF microneedling and fractional CO2 laser for acne scarring were included and quality assessed using the Downs and Black checklist. CASE SERIES Patient records were reviewed from 2 clinics, one in London, UK, and the other in Washington D.C., United States, to identify patients who underwent a single treatment with RF microneedling and fractional CO2 laser for acne scarring. Outcome assessment was via the Scar Global Assessment (SGA) scale. RESULTS Systematic review: Three articles were included and reported improvements in acne scar severity. Adverse effects included erythema, edema, pain, vesicle formation, erosion, petechiae, desquamation, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), and acne flare. Quality scores ranged from 14 to 15 (maximum of 21). CASE SERIES Twenty-six patients were included. Mean SGA Score was 3.0 at baseline and 1.3 at follow-up. All patients had an improved SGA score. Adverse effects included erythema, pain, edema, skin crusting, PIH, and acne flare. All patients resumed normal activities within 7 days of treatment. CONCLUSION Combination RF microneedling and fractional CO2 laser appears a safe and effective treatment for patients with acne scarring. A single treatment can result in noticeable improvements in acne scar severity with a short recovery time.

Abstract
Skin resurfacing for cutaneous rejuvenation has evolved with the development of a plethora of nonsurgical and minimally invasive modalities. We have highlighted the advances in laser therapy, chemical peels, radiofrequency, microneedling, and platelet-rich plasma therapy. We have also included studies providing head-to-head comparisons between procedures and discussed relevant debates in the field. We have examined additionally combination treatments and resurfacing in acne scars, melasma, and skin of color.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The efficacy of microneedle fractional radiofrequency (MFR) for the treatment of atrophic acne scars has been recently described, but accurate in vivo microscopic documentation of the processes occurring has never been reported. AIMS The aim of this study is to describe in vivo morphological atrophic acne scars' variations after treatment with MFR by means reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) and three-dimensional (3D) imaging. PATIENTS/METHODS A total of 11 patients requiring treatment for atrophic facial acne scars were treated with four monthly sessions of MFR. 3D imaging and RCM were assessed at baseline and 1 months after last session. Clinical improvement, according to Global Assessment Improvement Scale (GAIS), and patients' satisfaction were evaluated. RESULTS Clinical improvement was observed in all the treated patients, although better results were obtained for boxcar scars (p= 0.043). 3D imaging revealed a significant improvement in terms of mean scars' depth (p<0.001). Otherwise, RCM highlighted collagen remodeling with restoration of a reticular structure. CONCLUSIONS Our study confirms the efficacy and safety of MFR in acne scars' treatment and provides the microscopic description of the results using RCM. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract
Recent advances in laser technology allowed the development of systems that improve texture, appearance and pliability of skin in acne scars (AS). Currently, comprehensive comparative studies on the efficacy of the most commonly used fractional systems in AS are lacking. Thus, the aim of this work was to appraise and compare the clinical response to erbium versus CO2 lasers in AS in the form of a meta-analysis. The databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane library were searched. Main clinical outcomes were investigator-reported scar improvement and participant-reported scar improvement. Five studies were included in this meta-analysis. Scar improvement was similar for both types of laser in terms of investigator-reported scar improvement (RR: 0.60 95 % CI: 0.35-1.02) and participant-reported scar improvement (RR: 0.99 95 % CI: 0.79-1.25). A sensitivity analysis that excluded studies with high risk of bias found the CO2 lasers to be superior to the erbium lasers (RR: 0.47 95 % CI: 0.24-0.93): However, the subgroup analysis showed the CO2 laser not to be significantly different from either the non-ablative erbium (RR: 0.65 95 % CI: 0.34-1.24) or the ablative erbium laser (RR: 0.60 95 % CI: 0.35-1.02). The CO2 laser produced a slightly greater clinical response compared to the erbium lasers based on the physician's assessment. Overall, the two devices do not differ largely in terms of efficacy but may be complementary, with each resurfacing laser better suited for different clinical tasks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND After dermatitis, acne is the next skin disease to contribute most to the burden of skin diseases worldwide. Recently, seven core outcome domains have been identified, which together form an Acne Core Outcome Set (ACORN). One of these was satisfaction with acne treatment. OBJECTIVES To identify studies that described the development of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMS), evaluated one or more measurement properties of a PROM, or evaluated the interpretability of a PROM in patients with acne regarding treatment satisfaction. METHODS The COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) search strategy for identifying PROMS on acne treatment satisfaction was used. We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, LILACS, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Emcare, PsycINFO and Academic Search premier (June 2020). Study selection, data extraction and assessment of methodological quality according to COSMIN guidance were carried out independently by two authors. RESULTS Only one study could be included, describing the development of a treatment satisfaction measure in patients with acne. The development was assessed as inadequate and data on measurement properties were lacking. Additionally, we found 188 studies reporting treatment satisfaction solely as an outcome, using a wide variety of methods, none of them standardized or validated. CONCLUSIONS We could not find a PROM on treatment satisfaction to recommend for a core outcome set in acne. There is an unmet need for a PROM on treatment satisfaction in acne that is robustly developed, designed and validated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many studies have evaluated radiofrequency microneedling (RFMN) in various dermatologic conditions. However, the efficacy and safety of RFMN, and how it compares with other energy-based devices in a clinician's armamentarium, remains unclear. OBJECTIVE To review higher-quality evidence supporting RFMN and the dermatologic conditions which it can be used in. MATERIALS AND METHODS A search was conducted in MEDLINE and EMBASE from inception to May 13, 2020, using the terms: "radiofrequency microneedling" OR "fractional radiofrequency" OR "radiofrequency needling" OR "radiofrequency percutaneous collagen induction." Only randomized, split body or blinded studies with original data on humans were included. Non-English or non-dermatology-related studies were excluded. RESULTS Forty-two higher-quality studies were included after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. There were 14 studies for skin rejuvenation, 7 for acne scars, 6 for acne vulgaris, 5 each for striae and axillary hyperhidrosis, 2 for melasma, and 1 each for rosacea, cellulite, and androgenetic alopecia. CONCLUSION Radiofrequency microneedling is an effective intervention that can be used repeatedly and safely in combination with other treatment modalities and in individuals with darker skin phototypes. Radiofrequency microneedling-induced dermal remodeling and neocollagenesis are slow and progressive but continue to improve even 6 months after treatment.

Abstract
Background Microneedling (MN) is used for the treatment of scars, amongst other indications. Although used in Asia and the Middle East for decades, related to the supposed lack of post-procedure pigmentary alterations even in darker skin types, MN only recently gained attention in the United States as an effective, well-tolerated aesthetic treatment. Materials and Methods A systematic review of the Medline database was completed using search terms “microneedle” or “microneedling” or “micro needle” or “micro needling” and “scar”. Included articles were written in English and discussed the use of MN for the treatment of scars in human subjects. Results Fifty-eight studies were included for review, with a total of 1845 patients treated for acne scarring, hypertrophic or keloid scars, and those resulting from surgery, trauma, varicella or smallpox. MN and its counterpart fractional radiofrequency MN (FRF-MN) were used as monotherapy or in combination with topical, surgical or systemic modalities. MN and FRF-MN treatment resulted in clinical improvement of scar appearance from baseline. No serious adverse events occurred. Conclusion MN is a well-tolerated, minimally invasive procedure that can be used for the treatment of scars with a high level of patient satisfaction. Further clinical studies are needed to develop standardized treatment protocols.

Abstract
We investigated the effectiveness of fractional carbon dioxide laser (FCO2 ) vs fractional radiofrequency (FRF) and FCO2 vs FRF plus FCO2 combination in the treatment of acne scars. Twenty-seven patients were included. Scar severity was scored with "Echelle d'évaluation clinique des cicatrices d'acné" (ECCA) by a dermatologist blinded to treatment. FCO2 and FRF were administered to the right and left halves of the patients' faces, respectively, at the first three visits, once a month. At the fourth visit, FCO2 was administered to both sides. Last evaluation was performed 6 months after the last treatment. Mean ECCA scores for both face halves decreased gradually at each visit compared with Visit-1; however, the effect size of decrease was higher in the right half of the face and in terms of gender differences was higher in women for both sides that the difference was more pronounced for the FRF side. There was no statistically significant change in the mean VAS patient satisfaction scores in the following visits compared with Visit-2 on both halves (P > .05). Side effects were similar; but lasted longer in the FCO2 side. Both FCO2 and FRF are effective treatment methods in the treatment of atrophic acne scars. Combining FCO2 to FRF improves patient satisfaction. FRF may achieve better results in women compared with men. To our knowledge the study is unique prospective, controlled clinical study comparing the efficacy of FCO2 and FRF plus FCO2 combination treatments.
