A qualitative study of perioperative nursing students' experiences of interprofessional simulation-based learning

Student Expectations and Outcomes in Virtual vs. In-Person Interprofessional Simulations: A Qualitative Analysis

Background: Health-related programs frequently integrate interprofessional education (IPE) into their training. The COVID-19 pandemic transitioned many IPE programs online, making it essential to assess student expectations and perceived learning outcomes across virtual simulations and in-person settings. Methods: This qualitative study compared student expectations and self-reported outcomes across in-person and virtual case scenarios at a Texas health science center. Responses to open-ended questions from two data collection periods were analyzed using inductive coding and thematic analysis. Results: Students from nursing, medicine, dentistry, public health, and informatics participated in each group. Three major themes emerged from this study: communication, teamwork, and role identification, with self-development and professionalism as major subthemes. For communication, students often described a desire for increased simulations to "practice with interprofessional communication". Teamwork was the second theme identified, with students discussing the significance of effective teamwork, such as, "It is a good practice to work together, listen to each other, and achieve a common goal of patients getting better". Additionally, students expressed a desire to better understand the roles of other healthcare professionals across different settings. Conclusions: Realistic IPE simulations may help students build confidence in their team roles while understanding other health professions. To strengthen curriculum design, faculty should include student expectations and perceived outcomes from IPE activities. A limitation of this study is the reliance on self-reported data, which may introduce response bias and the potential variability in student experiences.

Effect of simulation-based training workshop on obstetric emergency team collaboration and communication: a mixed study

Aims and objectives

To explore the effects of simulation-based midwife training workshops and determine whether such a program can improve team collaboration and communication.

Background

Simulation training improves communication, team cooperation, critical thinking, and situational awareness.

Design

This mixed study was conducted September 15-18, 2021.

Methods

Participants included 23 obstetricians and midwives who completed 2 days of simulation training, including communication, skills, teamwork, single technical operation, and scene running. The Clinical Teamwork Scale was used before and after the comparison, and the data were analyzed using a phenomenological analytic process.

Results

The total team cooperation, transparent thinking, closed-loop communication, overall decision-making, clear responsibility, and leadership scores of the trainees were significantly higher after than before the training. The experience of attending a simulated training workshop can be divided into two themes: innovative ways of offering training and active learning. Three key themes emerged from each category: education combined with recreation; full participation in interactions; and teamwork and communication. (1) application of knowledge (2) dissemination, and (3) sublimation of knowledge.

Conclusion

This study's findings indicated a good experience and higher team cooperation score among midwives participating in simulation-based training in China, the value of our work is to show that the researched teaching methods, although published in other contexts, are also valuable in the Chinese context, suggesting that they will pass on the methods and concepts of the simulated training to others and change the current status of classroom teaching, which is its most meaningful practical training effect.

Relevance to clinical practice

These results imply that simulation-based midwife training for obstetric emergencies is required to improve the comprehensive ability of midwives to address obstetric emergencies, thereby improving maternal clinical outcomes.

No patient or public contribution

Neither patients nor the public were involved in this study, and the midwives and obstetricians voluntarily participated.

Nursing Students' Scenario Performance: Game Metrics in a Simulation Game

AIM

The purpose of this study was to examine nursing students' scenario performance in a simulation game by utilizing game metrics.

BACKGROUND

A significant advantage of simulation games is that they can store large amounts of data. Although game metrics enable the objective evaluation and analysis of performance, their use in the evaluation of students' performance is limited.

METHOD

Nursing students (N = 376) played a simulation game at home for 1 week. The resulting data consisted of game metrics stored in the game: number of playthroughs, mean scores, and mean playing times.

RESULTS

The total number of playthroughs was 1,923. Statistically significant differences were found between different scenarios regarding the mean score (p < .0001). Mean playing time was significantly associated with the mean score (p < .05).

CONCLUSION

Game metrics demonstrate nursing students' scenario performance in clinical reasoning skills in different scenarios in a simulation game.

Professional competence development through interprofessional simulation-based learning assists perioperative nurses in postgraduation acute clinical practice situations: A qualitative study

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

To explore recently graduated perioperative nurses' experiences of interprofessional simulation-based learning during postgraduate education and investigate whether and how this learning approach contributed to the development of their professional competence in meeting acute clinical situations.

BACKGROUND

Perioperative nursing requires specialised education that offers professional development to ensure high-quality nursing care and patient safety in acute situations. Interprofessional simulation-based learning exposes students to acute situations in a safe environment without the risk of harming the patient, and it prepares postgraduate nursing students for clinical practice. Despite extensive research regarding simulation-based learning, there is a lack of knowledge on what impact such training has on perioperative nursing students after graduation.

DESIGN

An explorative qualitative design was used, and this study is reported in accordance with the COREQ guidelines.

METHOD

Between March 2019-November 2020, 16 perioperative nurses participated in semi-structured individual interviews three to five months after their graduation from five different educational institutions. During their postgraduate education, they had participated in interprofessional simulation-based learning that included acute clinical situations. A phenomenological hermeneutical analysis was applied to the data involving three steps: naïve reading, structural analysis and comprehensive understanding.

RESULTS

During the naïve reading, three themes emerged: competence in handling acute situations, competence in interprofessional teamwork and professional identity development.

CONCLUSION

Interprofessional simulation-based learning in perioperative nursing education developed relevant and important competence, including professional identity development, among perioperative nursing students. As recent graduates, their professional competence was transferred to clinical practice and developed further.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

Findings indicate that interprofessional simulation-based learning is an important educational approach in perioperative nursing education. It is essential to use effective learning approaches to develop competencies that are transferable to clinical practice and improve perioperative nurses' performance as recent graduates. Therefore, interprofessional simulation-based learning should be implemented into perioperative nursing education.

Trends and Innovations of Simulation for Twenty First Century Medical Education

In the last two decades there has been an enormous growth in the use of clinical simulation. This teaching-learning methodology is currently the main tool used in the training of healthcare professionals. Clinical simulation is in tune with new paradigms in education and is consistent with educational theories that support the use of experiential learning. It promotes the development of psychomotor skills and strengthens executive functions. This pedagogical approach can be applied in many healthcare topics and is particularly relevant in the context of restricted access to clinical settings. This is particularly relevant considering the current crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, or when trying to reduce the frequency of accidents attributed to errors in clinical practice. This mini-review provides an overview of the current literature on healthcare simulation methods, as well as prospects for education and public health benefits. A literature search was conducted in order to find the most current trends and state of the art in medical education simulation. Presently, there are many areas of application for this methodology and new areas are constantly being explored. It is concluded that medical education simulation has a solid theoretical basis and wide application in the training of health professionals at present. In addition, it is consolidated as an unavoidable methodology both in undergraduate curricula and in continuing medical education. A promising scenario for medical education simulation is envisaged in the future, hand in hand with the development of technological advances.
