Abstract
Invasive group B Streptococcus (GBS) infections are increasing among adults with underlying health conditions; however, clinical manifestations and serotype distribution remain unclear. This study investigated the molecular characteristics and antimicrobial resistance of invasive GBS in Korean adults. GBS isolates from patients with invasive diseases during 2006–2015 were investigated for capsular serotype, multilocus sequence type (ST), antimicrobial susceptibility, and resistance genes. Among the 74 isolates analyzed, the most common serotype was Ib (31.1%), followed by III (21.6%), V (20.3%), Ia (12.2%), and VI (12.2%). Thirteen STs were detected, with ST1, ST10, ST19, and ST23 as the most prevalent. The dominant capsular serotype exhibited by ST1 was V, and those expressed by ST10, ST19, and ST23 were Ib, III, and Ia, respectively. Erythromycin and levofloxacin resistance were observed in 33.8% and 31.1% of the isolates, respectively. ST10-Ib (n = 11/11, 100%) and ST654-Ib (n = 3/3, 100%) were dominant levofloxacin-resistant strains. Serotypes Ib, III, and V were most common among adults, which is inconsistent with recent reports in Korea where III, V, and Ia were predominant in infants. The difference in the serotype distribution between adults and children may be associated with the selective pressure imparted by antibiotics.

Abstract
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a kind of opportunistic pathogenic bacteria and mainly strikes the lower digestive tract and genitourinary tract. It is a major risk factor for neonatal babies, seriously threatening their lives. In the present study, we aimed to detect the GBS colonization in late pregnant women, and to study the effect of GBS on maternal and infants’ prognosis. Pregnant women with a gestational age of 35–37 weeks were enrolled in the study. Real-time polymerase chain-reaction (RT-PCR) was used to detect the colonization of GBS in the vaginal and rectal secretions for late pregnant women according to the screening guidelines. Chi-square test was applied to analyze the relationship between GBS colonization and clinical characteristics. A follow-up of 6 weeks was performed on the puerpera and infants after delivery. The positive rate of GBS was 12.6% in late pregnant women. GBS carrier state was positively related to several pregnancy outcomes, including intrauterine infection, premature rupture of membranes, postpartum hemorrhage, fetal distress and puerperal infection, as well as to part neonatal outcomes, containing neonatal infection, neonatal pneumonia and neonatal sepsis (all P < 0.05). GBS infection in late pregnant women results in adverse effects on maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the long-term antibiotic susceptibility of group B Streptococcus (GBS) present in the vagina. MATERIALS AND METHODS A population-based retrospective cohort study was performed. A total of 19,899 women who underwent vaginal swab examination between 2005 and 2017 was enrolled. Specimens were cultured on modified Drigalski agar, blood agar, and chocolate agar media. Antibiotic susceptibilities of GBS were assessed using eight antibiotics, namely penicillin-G (PC-G), cefotiam (CTM), cefditoren (CDTR), ceftriaxone (CTRX), meropenem (MEPM), chloramphenicol (CP), levofloxacin (LVFX), and azithromycin (AZM), by the broth microdilution method when GBS was positive in the culture. The main outcome was antibiotic sensitivity based on the culture results. RESULTS GBS was 100% susceptible to PC-G, CTM, CTRX, CDTR, and MEPM. However, the susceptibility trend showed a considerable decrease for CP (99%-81%), LVFX (91%-70%), and AZM (87%-57%). CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated a significant decrease in the antibiotic sensitivity of GBS in Japan in the past 13 years. Based on these results, current policies on antibiotic resistance of GBS in maternal and neonatal care may need to be reassessed.

Abstract
Group B streptococcus (GBS) vaccines are currently under development. Data on the natural immunity in diverse age groups will aid establishing the GBS immunization policy. In this study, thirty serum samples were collected from three age groups (neonates/infants, pregnant women, and the elderly) between August 2016 and July 2017. Serotype-specific opsonophagocytic activity (OPA) was assessed using a GBS multiplex opsonophagocytic killing assay (MOPA) against serotypes Ia, III, and V. The mean OPA titers for serotype Ia of the three age groups were not significantly different (p = .156), but tended to be lower in neonates/infants (mean ± standard deviation, 137 ± 278). For serotype III and V, the mean OPA titer of neonates/infants (338 ± 623 and 161 ± 445, respectively) was significantly lower than that of pregnant women (1377 ± 1167 and 9414 ± 6394) and the elderly (1350 ± 1741 and 3669 ± 5597) (p = .002). In conclusion, the lower levels of OPA titers against all tested serotypes in neonates/infants, despite high maternal titers, indicates that intrapartum GBS vaccinations may be required for efficient placental transfer of serotype-specific GBS antibodies with high avidity.

Abstract
Streptococcus agalactiae, also known as Group B Streptococcus (GBS), is a bacteria with truly protean biology. It infects a variety of hosts, among which the most commonly studied are humans, cattle, and fish. GBS holds a singular position in the history of bacterial genomics, as it was the substrate used to describe one of the first major conceptual advances of comparative genomics, the idea of the pan-genome. In this review, I describe a brief history of GBS and the major contributions of genomics to understanding its genome plasticity and evolution as well as its molecular epidemiology, focusing on the three hosts mentioned above. I also discuss one of the major recent paradigm shifts in our understanding of GBS evolution and disease burden: foodborne GBS can cause invasive infections in humans.
