Abstract
The biopsychosocial model suggests that temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) often coexist with mental health disorders, particularly depression and anxiety, affecting a significant portion of the global population. The interplay between TMDs and mental health disorders contributes to a complex comorbidity, perpetuating a cycle of mutual influence and reinforcement. This review investigates the neurobiological mechanisms and epidemiological evidence supporting the shared etiology of TMDs and mental health disorders, exploring potential shared vulnerabilities and bidirectional causal relationships. Shared vulnerabilities between TMDs and mental health disorders may stem from genetic and epigenetic predispositions, psychosocial factors, and behavioral aspects. Inflammatory cytokines, neurotransmitters, neurotrophins, and neuropeptides play pivotal roles in both peripheral and central sensitization as well as neuroinflammation. Brain imaging studies suggest that TMDs and mental health disorders exhibit overlapping brain regions indicative of reward processing deficits and anomalies within the triple network model. Future research efforts are crucial for developing a comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms and confirming the reciprocal causal effects between TMDs and mental health disorders. This review provides valuable insights for oral healthcare professionals, stressing the importance of optimizing treatment strategies for individuals dealing with concurrent TMDs and mental health issues through a personalized, holistic, and multidisciplinary approach.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A network meta-analysis (NMA) was applied to compare the therapeutic effect of different acupuncture methods on temporomandibular disorder (TMD). MATERIALS AND METHODS A computer retrieval was carried out in the English databases of Cochrane, PubMed, Embase and Web of Science, as well as the Chinese databases of CNKI, Wanfang and VIP for randomized controlled trials on the effect of acupuncture on TMD, with a retrieval deadline of January 21, 2024. Data analysis was conducted using R software and Bayesian method. The pain score served as the primary outcome measure, with the mouth opening as the secondary outcome measure. RESULTS Thirty-five articles were included in the analysis, involving 1937 TMD patients. The NMA results suggested that DN-PT had the best effect on relieving pain and improving mouth opening. CONCLUSIONS Based on the available evidence, the results of the NMA suggest that DN-PT is most effective in relieving TMD pain and increasing mouth opening. However, due to the fact that some acupuncture therapies are only reported in a small number of research reports, this may lead to an increase in the randomness of the results and a decrease in the reliability.

Abstract
Orofacial pain (OFP) is an ache in the front part of the head and typically has musculoskeletal, dental, neural, or sinogenic origin. Dry needling (DN) is the insertion of a solid sterile fine needle through the skin aimed at deactivating the myofascial trigger points has extensively been studied in randomized clinical trials (RCTs). This systematic review was aimed at evaluating the evidence base for the effectiveness of DN for OFP. We searched Medline, Cochrane Central, and Web of Science (from their respective inceptions to February 2024) for RCTs evaluating the effectiveness of DN in patients with OFP. Studies with individuals suffering from cervicogenic or tension type headaches as well as observational studies were excluded. Primary outcomes were pain intensity and severity; secondary outcomes were disability, quality of life, and adverse effects. The review adhered to the methods described by in the Cochrane Handbook. Twenty-four RCTs with a total of 1,318 patients suffering from OFP were included. Most had an unclear or high risk of bias, and the quality of the evidence ranged from very low to low for all comparisons and outcomes. A meta-analysis suggested that, compared with usual care alone, DN + usual care had no effect on pain intensity (visual analogue scale) (standardized mean difference = -1.89, 95% confidence intervals -5.81 to 2.02, very low certainty evidence) at follow-ups of up to 6 weeks. There is little reliable evidence for the effectiveness of DN in reducing OFP. Future, larger, more rigorous studies might reduce the existing uncertainties.

Abstract
Mastication myalgia is the most common cause of non-odontogenic pain in the orofacial region and is often associated with a reduced quality of life. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the clinical aspects of myalgia based on available research. The review includes epidemiological, diagnostic, and etiological aspects. In addition, the potential risk factors related to the transition from acute to chronic myalgia are explored and treatment strategies are presented for its management. As a result, this review may increase clinical knowledge about mastication myalgia and clarify strategies regarding prevention, diagnostics, and management to improve prognosis and reduce patient suffering.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) comprise a cluster of conditions with a wide range of etiological factors that causes pain and discomfort in the masticatory muscles (TMD-M) and temporomandibular joints (TMD-J). More than 50% of the patients with TMD report regular usage of drugs. However, there is still no consensus, nor is there any evidence-based support for clinicians when choosing between different drugs. Therefore, this systematic review, including a network meta-analysis (NMA), aimed to evaluate the scientific evidence and discuss the pharmacological treatment options available to treat painful TMD. METHOD An electronic search was undertaken to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating pharmacological treatments for TMD-M and/or TMD-J, published until 6 April 2023. Since only 11 articles could be used for an NMA regarding TMD-M, a narrative synthesis was also performed for all 40 included RCTs. The quality of evidence was rated according to Cochrane's tool for assessing risk of bias, while the certainty of evidence was rated according to Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). RESULTS When it comes to TMD-M, evidence arises for wet needling therapies with BTX-A, granisetron, and PRP as well as muscle relaxants. For TMD-J, evidence points toward pharmacological treatment approaches including non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and glucocorticosteriods (for inflammatory conditions) as well as hyaluronic acid and dextrose. CONCLUSIONS The evidence clearly indicates that the pharmacological treatment approaches differ between TMD-M and TMD-J. Therefore, it is of great importance to first try to uncover each patient's individual and multifactorial etiology and then employ a multifaceted treatment strategy, including pharmacological treatment approaches.

Abstract
The aims of this article are to discuss the current, and potential future directions, in the diagnosis of myogenous temporomandibular disorders (M-TMD), as well as to report a pilot study to investigate the feasibility and clinical outcomes of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) in the treatment of M-TMD. Forty-one adult patients presented with M-TMD were recruited into the study and randomized into two groups: Group 1 received ESWT treatment, whereas Group 2 received placebo treatment. The variables investigated were pain, measured by a numerical rating scale (NRS) and mouth opening. Twenty-six patients (Group 1: n = 14, mean age = 45.3 (16.7) years; Group 2: n = 12, mean age = 46.8 (19.7) years) completed 1-year follow up and were included into the final analysis. In both groups, reduction in pain and increase in MO (unassisted maximum, assisted maximum, and pain-free) were seen at post-treatment 1 year. There were more reduction in pain and increase in all MO in Group 1 than Group 2, but statistical significance was not detected. No major complications were encountered in this study. Although significant differences were not seen between groups, this prospective pilot study provided preliminary evidence that ESWT is safe and potentially beneficial in the treatment of M-TMD.
