The Effect of Polymerization Methods and Fiber Types on the Mechanical Behavior of Fiber-Reinforced Resin-Based Composites

Effects of different surface treatments on surface topography and bond strength in the repair of fiber-reinforced dentin composite

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different surface treatments on the repair bond strength between a fiber-reinforced dentin composite and a posterior composite.

METHODS

Forty fiber-reinforced dentin composite resin blocks (4 mm × 4 mm × 4 mm) were separated into eight groups (n = 5) according to the surface preparation methods: (G1) negative control group, (G2) adhesive application, (G3) 50% dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) application, (G4) 50% DMSO + adhesive application, (G5) 37% phosphoric acid etch + adhesive application, (G6) air abrasion + adhesive application, (G7) 37% phosphoric acid etch + 50% DMSO application + adhesive application, and (G8) air abrasion +50% DMSO application + adhesive application group. The composite surfaces were repaired in two layers with a posterior composite. Composite sticks were subjected to a micro tensile bond strength (μTBS) test. Fractured surfaces were evaluated using a stereomicroscope (×25). Short fiber-reinforced composite samples' surfaces were investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Shapiro Wilk, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey HSD tests were used for statistical evaluation.

RESULTS

The highest average (μTBS) values were observed in G8, whereas the lowest mean μTBS values were evident in the G1 group. Statistically significant μTBS values were found in all adhesive-applied groups when compared with the negative control group. Notably, the application of 50% DMSO without adhesive did not lead to a statistically significant increase in μTBS values. SEM images demonstrated that acid etching partially eliminated residues on the composite surface, while air abrasion had a detrimental effect on the integrity of fiber structures.

CONCLUSION

In the repair of fiber-reinforced dentin composite with a posterior composite, adhesive application is an effective approach. The treatment of 50% DMSO without adhesive did not confer a statistically significant advantage, and the supplemental use of acid etch or air abrasion did not show an additional benefit compared to adhesive-only repairs.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Adhesive application emerges as a potent and effective strategy for the repair of bur-roughened fiber-reinforced dentin composites. With its limitations, the study highlights the efficacy of adhesive-only repairs without the necessity for additional surface treatments.

In Vitro Evaluation of the Strength of Dentin Replacement in Complex Posterior Tooth Restoration

Due to the increasing interest in direct restoration, there is a need to address the shortcomings of these restorations, mainly by increasing the longevity of complex direct restorations. The present study aimed to evaluate the tensile strength differences in the complex restoration of posterior teeth with dentin replacement constructed by fiber and non-fiber materials. The samples were extracted from the mandibular permanent-molar and prepared using a complex cavity. The cavity was subsequently restored with the centripetal incremental technique using a nano-fill composite and different base materials, namely fiber dentin replacement, non-fiber dentin replacement, and flowable composite. The universal testing machine was used to consider the tensile strength and the fracture patterns were assessed using stereomicroscopy, followed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) examination. The data were statistically analyzed using the one-way ANOVA test. No significant differences were noted in the tensile strength of the three base materials. By using stereomicroscopy and SEM, the adhesive fracture patterns were observed more clearly in the cavities with fiber-based dentin replacement, whereas mixed fracture patterns were evident in cavities with non-fiber dentin replacement and flowable composite bases. The results indicated that the addition of fiber in dentin replacement did not affect the tensile strength in the complex restoration. Therefore, dentin replacement of both fiber and non-fiber materials is applicable as a base material for complex restoration of the posterior tooth.

Comparison of Different Restoration Techniques for Endodontically Treated Teeth

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the physical properties of endodontically treated teeth restored with five different restorative techniques and materials. Hundred and forty extracted human molar teeth were used. In addition to five restoration groups, specimens with no restorations were used as the negative control, and intact molar teeth were used as the positive control. For flexural strength tests, material specimens were made from 5 different materials using a mould according to ISO 4049 standards. One-way ANOVA revealed that the fracture resistance was significantly affected by the restoration type. SFRC group showed the best fracture resistance values, while lowest values were seen in the GWF group. The test results of flexural strength showed values between 140 and 184 MPa and modulus of elasticity between 6.33 and 18.89 GPa ( $p<0.05$ ). Under the limits of this study, results showed that SFRC can be used to increase the fracture resistance of ETT.

Comparison of physical and biological properties of a flowable fiber reinforced and bulk filling composites

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate in vitro the mechanical, biological, and polymerization behavior of a flowable bulk-fill composite with fibers as a dispersed phase.

METHODS

EverX Flow™ (GC Corporation) (EXF), one conventional bulk-fill composite (Filtek™ Bulk Fill Posterior Restorative, 3 M (FBF)), and one flowable bulk composite without fibers (SDR® flow+, Dentsply (SDR)) were tested. Samples were characterized in terms of flexural strength (ISO 4049), fracture toughness (ISO 20795-1), and Vickers hardness. Polymerization stress and volumetric shrinkage were evaluated. The in vitro biological assessment was achieved on cultured primary Human Gingival Fibroblast cells (HGF). The cell metabolic activity was evaluated using Alamar Blue assay at 1, 3, and 5 days of contact to the 3 tested composite extracts (ISO 10993) and cell morphology was evaluated by confocal microscopy. Data were submitted to One-Way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and independent t-test (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

FBF showed statistically higher Vickers hardness and flexural modulus than EXF and SDR. However, EXF showed statistically higher K_IC than FBF and SDR. EXF had the statistically highest shrinkage stress values and FBF the lowest. Archimedes volumetric shrinkage showed significantly lower values for FBF as compared to the other two composites. Slight cytotoxic effect was observed for the three composites at day one. An enhancement of metabolic activity at day 5 was observed in cells treated with EXF extracts.

SIGNIFICANCE

EXF had a significantly higher fracture toughness validating its potential use as a restorative material in stress bearing areas. EXF showed higher shrinkage stress values, and less cytotoxic effect. Fiber reinforced flowable composite is mainly indicated for deep and large cavities, signifying the importance for assessing its shrinkage stress and biological behavior.

Influence of High-Pressure Polymerization on Mechanical Properties of Denture Base Resins

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to study the influence of high-pressure (HP) polymerization on the mechanical properties of denture base PMMA resins compared with conventional thermopolymerization and PMMA discs for digital dentures.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Three groups of blocks were prepared: Probase Hot (Ivoclar Vivadent, Lichtenstein) conventionally heat polymerized at 100°C, Probase Hot heat polymerized at 100°C under HP (200 MPa) and Ivobase CAD (Ivoclar Vivadent, Lichtenstein). Samples for mechanical/physical (n = 30) and samples for viscoelastic (n = 10) characterizations were cut from the blocks. Flexural strength (σ_f ), elastic modulus (E_f ), hardness, density (ρ), flexural deformation at maximal flexural stress, flexural load energy (U_r ) and viscoelastic properties (E', E'', Tanδ, T_g ) were analyzed using one-way ANOVA (α = 0.05), Scheffé multiple means comparisons (α = 0.05) and Weibull statistics (for σ_f ). SEM images of the fractured surfaces were obtained.

RESULTS

E_f , E', E'' and density of HP polymerized Probase hot were significantly higher than conventional heat polymerized Probase Hot, whereas T_g was significantly lower and σ_f , Tanδ, hardness, flexural deformation at maximal flexural stress, U_r were not significantly different. The highest values for σ_f , flexural deformation at maximal flexural stress, U_r and Weibull modulus were obtained with Ivobase CAD.

CONCLUSION

HP polymerization does not significantly increase the mechanical properties of denture base resins.
