Neophobic Tendencies and Dietary Behavior in A Cohort of Female College Students from Southern India

The relationships among food neophobia, mediterranean diet adherence, and eating disorder risk among university students: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Food neophobia, characterized by the fear of unfamiliar foods, can be influenced by environmental, cultural, and genetic factors, leading to decreased consumption of novel or diverse foods. Understanding the impact of Mediterranean diet adherence and eating disorders on dietary behaviors is crucial, particularly for young adults who are developing lifelong eating patterns.

METHODS

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships among food neophobia, Mediterranean diet adherence, and eating disorders in university students aged 18-24 years. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1277 students (67.2% female) via an online questionnaire to assess sociodemographic characteristics, food neophobia (Food Neophobia Scale, FNS), Mediterranean diet adherence (KIDMED), and eating disorder risk (Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire, EDE-Q).

RESULTS

Most participants (67.7%) had a normal body mass index (BMI), 19.3% were classified as overweight, and 3.7% were classified as obese. Compared with male students, female students had significantly higher FNS scores (40.8 ± 9.21) (38.5 ± 10.97, p < 0.05), indicating greater food neophobia among women. Similarly, men's EDE-Q scores (3.5 ± 3.32) were significantly lower than those of women (4.4 ± 4.05, p < 0.05). Most participants (69.5%) did not experience food neophobia, and underweight individuals (11.0%) were more neophobic than obese individuals (4.4%). No significant differences were observed according to BMI (p > 0.05). A positive correlation was found between age and KIDMED adherence, whereas a negative correlation was observed between BMI and EDE-Q scores regarding food neophobia. The effects of BMI on food neophobia and the risk of eating disorders were found to vary by sex.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that food neophobia may harm Mediterranean diet adherence and increase the risk of eating disorders among university students. Targeted interventions addressing food neophobia could promote healthier eating habits, such as the Mediterranean diet, thereby reducing disordered eating behaviors and associated risks. Further research is needed to confirm these findings, improve population nutritional habits and mental health outcomes, and develop effective public health strategies.

The association between food neophobia, bi-dimensional aspects of orthorexia, and anxiety among vegetarians and omnivores

Vegetarianism is a growing trend, and food neophobia and orthorexia nervosa could act as barriers to achieving a healthy vegetarian diet. The aim of this study is to compare the levels of food neophobia, anxiety, and both healthy and pathological aspects of orthorexia among vegetarians and omnivores. Additionally, the study aims to identify the relationships between food neophobia, anxiety, and orthorexia. In this cross-sectional online survey, a total of 324 vegetarian and 455 omnivores adults participated. The questionnaire consisted of four sections: sociodemographic, lifestyle, and health-related characteristics, the Food Neophobia Scale (FNS), the Teruel Orthorexia Scale (TOS), and the Generalized Anxiety Disorders-7 Scale. Vegetarians exhibited lower FNS scores (p < 0.001) and had higher healthy orthorexic scores (p < 0.001) than omnivores. There were no differences between groups for anxiety scores (p > 0.05). Regression analysis indicated that higher food neophobia (OR: 0.953, 95% CI:0.937-0.968) and TOS-OrNe scores (OR: 0.946, 95% CI: 0.901-0.993) were associated with lower odds of following a vegetarian diet. Conversely, higher TOS-HeOr scores (OR: 1.135, 95% CI:1.096-1.176) were linked to an increased likelihood of adopting a vegetarian diet. Furthermore, both FNS and GAD-7 scores showed negative correlations with TOS-HeOR (r = -0.124, p < 0.001 and r = -0.129 p < 0.001, respectively), and positive correlations with TOS-OrNe (r = 0.106, p < 0.001 and r = 0.146, p < 0.001). In conclusion, vegetarians exhibit lower levels of food neophobia and a greater interest in healthy eating than omnivores. Additionally, the distinct correlation between two dimensions of orthorexia and food neophobia and anxiety provides support for the two-dimensional nature of orthorexia.

Food neophobia and its association with sociodemographic factors and food preferences among Bangladeshi university students: Evidence from a cross-sectional study

Food neophobia, described as a reluctance to eat and or avoid new food, is a personality trait that affects food choice. Despite its potential influence on an individual's food intake, food neophobia has been poorly investigated in Bangladesh. This cross-sectional study was designed to evaluate food neophobia and its association with sociodemographic factors and food preferences in a sample of Bangladeshi university students. Five hundred students from five public universities completed the structured surveys. Food neophobia was assessed by a 10-item validated food neophobia scale with some minor modifications based on study settings. A multiple linear regression model was used to observe the factors associated with food neophobia. The mean food neophobia score among study participants was 37.45 (SD: 13.39, Range: 13-67). According to the adjusted statistical model, being female (regression coefficient, β = 2.73), having higher monthly family income (β = -6.64), being underweight (β = 4.68), being overweight (β = -4.63), having any food allergy (β = 9.09), and a history of sickness after eating a new food item (β = 5.16) were significantly associated with food neophobia amongst the participants. The participants' liking of various food items such as vegetables were significantly correlated with food neophobia scores. Nutrition education policies and programs are of importance to address the students' food neophobia during their tertiary education so that they maintain lifelong healthy dietary habits and consume a variety of foods to improve their physical health and well-being.

Food neophobia and intervention of university students in China

BACKGROUND

Food neophobia was defined as the unwillingness or avoidance to eat new foods. There are many studies on food neophobia in children, but few in university students. This study was to examine the level of food neophobia of Chinese university students. The aim is to find a way to help them relieve food neophobia.

METHODS

A total of 2,366 university students (16-22 years old) from Xinyang normal university were recruited to conduct a questionnaire survey on food neophobia scale (FNS) of Chinese version, which contained 10 questions. Significant difference analysis and principal component analysis were conducted.

RESULTS

For Chinese university students, willingness to try new food, trust in new food, eating disorder, and food pickiness were the characteristic indexes to evaluate the food neophobia. Gender had no significant effect, but long-term nutrition courses had a great impact on food neophobia of university students.

CONCLUSIONS

The level of food neophobia of Chinese university students is relatively high. To formulate and implement a continuous diet and nutrition education plan is good and necessary to relieve the food neophobia.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

These data complement the limited literature on food neophobia of university students, which will help to develop intervention plans to reduce eating disorders and support the need for further research to reveal the potential mechanism.
