Abstract
BACKGROUND The biological mechanisms linking early life phthalate exposure with adverse behaviors and cardiometabolic conditions also impact sleep health, but whether early life exposure impacts adolescent sleep is unknown. OBJECTIVES We evaluated whether gestational and childhood urinary phthalate metabolite mixtures were associated with sleep characteristics during adolescence. We also examined periods of heightened susceptibility to individual phthalates. METHODS In the Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment (HOME) Study (Cincinnati, Ohio; 2003-2006; n = 156 ), we quantified urinary metabolites of eight parent phthalate diesters during pregnancy (16- and 26-wk) and childhood (ages 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, and 12 years). Using regression calibration approaches, we estimated average measurement error-corrected phthalate metabolite concentrations during pregnancy and childhood. We used wrist actigraphy to assess sleep characteristics for 1 wk among participants at age 12. Using quantile-based g-computation, we estimated covariate-adjusted differences in sleep efficiency (%), sleep fragmentation index scores (%), sleep duration (minutes) per quartile increase in all phthalate metabolite concentrations (ψ ), and weights indicating the contribution of each metabolite to ψ . Using multiple informant models, we examined whether associations between individual phthalate metabolites and sleep characteristics varied by timing of exposure. RESULTS Increasing all gestational phthalate metabolites by a quartile was associated with lower sleep efficiency [ψ = - 1.3 % ; 95% confidence interval (CI): - 2.4 , - 0.3 ] and higher sleep fragmentation (ψ = 1.6 % ; 95% CI: 0.3, 3.0); mono-n-butyl phthalate (MnBP) and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) metabolites contributed most to these relations. Higher childhood phthalate metabolite mixture quartiles were associated with shorter sleep duration (ψ = - 21 minutes; 95% CI: - 34 , - 9 ); monoethyl phthalate (MEP) and monocarboxyoctyl phthalate (MCOP) contributed most to this association. We found that higher DEHP metabolite concentrations during pregnancy were more strongly related to higher sleep fragmentation than childhood concentrations. In contrast, higher MEP and MnBP concentrations during childhood, but not pregnancy, were consistently associated with shorter sleep duration. DISCUSSION Phthalate metabolite concentrations during pregnancy and childhood were associated with poorer adolescent sleep health. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP15221.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endogenous steroid hormone assessment is essential for clinical practice. These hormones are typically measured in blood. More recently, measurement of steroids in hair samples has been gaining in popularity, so we have reviewed the methodologies used for this to-date. METHODS Ovid Medline, CINAHL, Psychinfo, and EMBASE were searched to identify manuscripts that analysed cortisol, testosterone, androstenedione, 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17OHP), dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS), and/or 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), in hair or fur. Data related to sampling and measurement procedures were extracted and analysed. RESULTS The systematic review included a total of 180 papers, with 82 % published in the past 8 years; 67 % were human and 33 % animal studies. Cortisol was by far the most common analyte. Incomplete reporting on sample harvest, preparation, and measurement procedures was common. Typically, samples were collected from posterior vertex of humans or back/neck of animals, weighing between 11 and 50 mg (with a range of 1.25-1000 mg). Samples were usually stored at room temperature, often using aluminium foil. Isopropanol was the most common cleaning solution. Hair was normally powdered or segmented prior to extraction. Extraction was typically carried out over 18-24 hours using methanol. Validation and precision information was provided in 47 % of studies. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review highlights the lack of standardisation in the analysis of endogenous steroids in hair. Reporting was typically incomplete, and assay validations were partial or absent. Together, these limit the value of these exciting new methods and hold back transition to clinical use.

Abstract
Purpose Most studies assessing hair cortisol were conducted with adults. As specific guidelines for infant hair collection are lacking, we developed a hair collection protocol for 12-month-old infants and assessed its acceptability and feasibility. Results Out of the total (N = 45), 95.6 % (n = 43) of caregivers consented to the procedure, while one caregiver did not consent (2.2 %), and another requested the procedure to be halted before required amount of hair had been reached (2.2 %). Furthermore, two (4.4 %) infants did not have enough hair for collection. There was no attrition due to infant fussiness/crying. Discussion We learned five lessons which can help to enhance reproducibility, mother's consent, and mother-infant comfort and acceptance of the procedure. The first lesson is to have the infant sit on the caregiver's lap to ensure the infant feels safe and remains relatively still. The second is to reassure caregivers by showing hair samples representing the amount to be cut as well as by clarifying no unaesthetic gaps would be visible. The third is to caress the infant's head to habituate them to the hair manipulation and to make soap bubbles as distractors. The fourth is to take extra care when securing the lock of hair for cutting because the infant scalp is thin and malleable. The fifth is to place a precision scale in the collection room to ensure the necessary weight is reached. Conclusion Our hair collection protocol developed for 12-month-old infants was deemed feasible and acceptable, filled an important literature gap concerning the absence of published protocols for infants, and will contribute to increase the replicability and collection efficiency for other research teams.

Abstract
Both prenatal and postnatal maternal depression have been associated with increased sleep problems in early childhood. However, this association is less consistent for postnatal depression, and the strength of the association remains unclear. The aim of the current study was to provide a quantitative synthesis of the literature to estimate the magnitude of the association between maternal depression and sleep problems in early childhood. Medline, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched for prospective longitudinal studies from 1970 to December 2022. Of 117 articles screened, 22 studies met the inclusion criteria. Both prenatal depression (OR = 1.82; 95% CI = 1.28-2.61) and postnatal depression (OR = 1.65; 95% CI = 1.50-1.82) were associated with increased likelihood of sleep problems in early childhood. The heterogeneity between the studies was significant and high both for prenatal (Q = 432.323; I2 = 97.456, P < .001) and postnatal depression (Q = 44.902, I2 = 65.594, P < .001), which mean that conclusions are tentative and need to be considered within the possible influence of unmeasured confounding. However, mitigating depression symptoms in mothers both during pregnancy and in the postnatal period would be an effective strategy for reducing sleep problems in children.

Abstract
Information on the relationships between the previous night's sleep and the next-day diurnal cortisol rhythm is inconsistent due to confounding factors such as sleep measurements (trait/state sleep and objective/subjective sleep) and cortisol sampling schemes. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate these relationships, considering the confounding factors. College students (n = 79) wore actigraphy for 3 days to undergo an evaluation of previous night-time sleep objectively and reported their subjective sleep parameters in a sleep diary. In addition, participants provided six salivary cortisol samples daily. Furthermore, six cortisol sampling schemes were created to reflect diurnal cortisol rhythms, and two different methods were used to calculate the index of diurnal cortisol slope (DCS). A multilevel model was created to examine the impact of both trait and state sleep on next-day diurnal cortisol rhythm. The results revealed that higher objective state sleep efficiency and longer objective state total sleep time were associated with a higher cortisol awakening response (CAR). Moreover, higher objective trait sleep efficiency and longer objective trait total sleep time were associated with higher waking cortisol levels and steeper DCS. In addition, a minimum of four saliva samples were required at different time points, including upon waking, 30 min after waking, 1 h after waking, and at bedtime, to explore the relationship of sleep efficiency/total sleep time with waking cortisol, CAR, and DCS. Furthermore, the index of the peak-to-bed slope was appropriately employed to examine the relationship between sleep efficiency and DCS, whereas the wake-to-bed slope was effective for examining the relationship between total sleep time and DCS. In summary, this study clarified the relationship between sleep and next-day diurnal cortisol rhythm and suggested a cost-effective cortisol sampling schedule and calculation methods.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death globally, with the prevalence projected to keep rising. Risk factors for adult CVD emerge at least as early as the prenatal period. Alterations in stress-responsive hormones in the prenatal period are hypothesized to contribute to CVD in adulthood, but little is known about relations between prenatal stress-responsive hormones and early precursors of CVD, such as cardiometabolic risk and health behaviors. The current review presents a theoretical model of the relation between prenatal stress-responsive hormones and adult CVD through cardiometabolic risk markers (e.g., rapid catch-up growth, high BMI/adiposity, high blood pressure, and altered blood glucose, lipids, and metabolic hormones) and health behaviors (e.g., substance use, poor sleep, poor diet and eating behaviors, and low physical activity levels). Emerging evidence in human and non-human animal literatures suggest that altered stress-responsive hormones during gestation predict higher cardiometabolic risk and poorer health behaviors in offspring. This review additionally highlights limitations of the current literature (e.g., lack of racial/ethnic diversity, lack of examination of sex differences), and discusses future directions for this promising area of research.

Abstract
Methods to improve sleep in infants commonly involve some ignoring (extinction) but are often unpopular with mothers worried about infant distress when left to cry. Alternative more responsive methods are needed. This pilot study evaluated stress, maternal depressive symptomology and sleep in mother/infant dyads, between Responsive, Controlled Crying and Control groups. From 199 mother/infant dyads from any cultural background, 41 infants 4-12 months were randomly allocated to Responsive (RG, n = 15), Controlled Crying (CCG, n = 18) or Controls (Treatment as Usual, TAUG, n = 8), with 10 withdrawing after randomisation. Infant sleep (7-day sleep diaries) and stress (oral cortisol on two nights), maternal self-reported stress (Subjective Units of Distress, SUDS), maternal perceived infant distress (MPI-S) and symptoms of maternal depression (Edinburgh Post-natal Depression Scale, EPDS) were measured four times across 8 weeks. Sleep duration was not different between groups but Responsive woke less (p = .008). There were no differences in cortisol between groups across time points. Maternal SUDS was positively correlated with infant cortisol and MPI-S (p < 0.05) and mothers in the Responsive group were significantly less stressed (p = 0.02) and reported less symptoms of depression (p < 0.05). Findings in this small sample show Responsive methods are comparable to the extinction (Controlled Crying) in sleep outcomes but from a relational and maternal mental health perspective, are less stressful, offering families potential choices of sleep interventions.
