Abstract
Contamination of seafood products with multi-drug-resistant (MDR) bacteria is considered to be a potential source for the spread of MDR bacteria in communities. However, little is known about the extent of the contamination of seafood, in particular shrimp, with MDR bacteria in Saudi Arabia. In this study, imported frozen shrimp in retail markets were examined for the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Escherichia coli. Escherichia coli was isolated from 40 frozen shrimp samples; a total of 25 and 15 shrimp samples were imported from China and Vietnam, respectively. Of the 40 examined frozen shrimp samples, 30 tested positive for E. coli, resulting in an overall isolation rate of 75%, with a total of 180 isolates being identified. The largest number of positive samples for E. coli isolates (n = 140) were found in 22 out of 25 samples from frozen shrimp imported from China. Additionally, eight out of 15 samples from frozen shrimp imported from Vietnam were positive for E. coli, leading to the recovery of 40 isolates. Overall, the susceptibilities among E. coli isolates were observed against 99.4% for amikacin, augmentin and kanamycin, 95% for cefoxitin and 92.7% for ceftazidime and nitrofurantoin. High percentage of the isolates exhibited resistance to cephalothin (174/180, 96.6%), ampicillin (167/180, 92.7%), Cephalexin (163/180. 90.5%), piperacillin (156/180, 86.6%), ceftriaxone (123/180, 68.3%), nalidixic acid (95/180, 52.7%), trimethoprim sulphamethoxazole (90/180, 50%), and tetracycline (88/180, 48.8%). Additionally, the MDR (resistant to ≥3 different class of antimicrobials) rate among E. coli isolates was 94.4% (170/180). A relatively high intermediate resistance of 60% (108/180) was exhibited for aztreonam. Notably, E. coli showed 71 different antibiotic resistance patterns with the multiple antibiotic resistant (MAR) index ranging from 0.04 to 0.66 and 89.4% of E. coli isolates recorded very significant MAR indexes above the range of 0.2. In this study, we recorded highest antimicrobial co-resistance patterns of 162 (90%) isolates between cephalothin and ampicillin, followed by 158 (87.7%) isolates between cephalothin and cephalexin. Furthermore, and interestingly, the segregation of antimicrobial resistance patterns based on the source of country origin of frozen shrimp revealed few inter-country resistant patterns found interconnecting and this influenced 44 (24.4%) isolates overlapping between isolates origin from frozen shrimp imported from China and Vietnam. This study documents the antimicrobial resistance in E. coli isolated from imported frozen shrimp and the presence of MDR E. coli in shrimp consuming communities, which may pose a risk to public health and the transfer of resistant bacteria to the food chain and environment.

Abstract
The consumption of seafood is crucial for food security, but poor hygiene along the food production chain can result in low microbiological quality, posing significant risks for public health and seafood quality. Thus, this study aimed to assess the microbiological quality and antimicrobial sensitivity of E. coli from 69 samples of illegally marketed shrimp and mussels in the Vitória Region, Brazil. These foods exhibited poor microbiological quality due to high counts of mesophilic, psychrotrophic, and enterobacteria microorganisms. While this issue is widespread in this area, shrimp samples displayed higher microbial counts compared to mussels, and fresh mussels had elevated counts of enterobacteria compared to frozen ones. Among the 10 E. coli isolates, none carried the genes blaCTX-M-1, blaCTX-M-2, blaCTX-M-3, blaCTX-M-15, mcr-1, mcr-2, mcr-3, mcr-4, and tet, associated with antibiotic resistance. Phenotypical resistance to tetracycline and fosfomycin was not observed in any isolate, while only 20% demonstrated resistance to ciprofloxacin. Regarding ampicillin and amoxicillin with clavulanic acid, 60% of isolates were resistant, 10% showed intermediate susceptibility, and 30% were sensitive. One isolate was considered simultaneously resistant to β-lactams and quinolones, and none were conserved as ESBL producers. These findings highlight the inherent risks to local public health that arise from consuming improperly prepared seafood in this area.

Abstract
The ubiquity of pathogenic E. coli isolate possessing antimicrobial resistance was investigated in seafood samples procured from major seafood supply chain markets established for export and domestic consumption along Tuticorin coast. Out of 63 seafood samples examined, 29 (46%) were found to be contaminated by pathogenic E. coli harbouring one or more genes of virulent potential. Based on virulome profiling, 9.55% of isolates belonged to enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), 8.08% to enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC), 7.35% to enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), 2.20% to enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), and 2.20% to uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC). All the 34 virulome positive and haemolytic pathogenic E. coli have been serogrouped as O119, O76, O18, O134, O149, O120, O114, O25, O55, O127, O6, O78, O83, O17 and clinically significant O111, O121, O84, O26, O103, and O104 (non-O157 STEC) serotypes in this study. Multi-drug resistance (MDR) (≥ 3 antibiotic classes/sub-classes) was exhibited in 38.23% of the pathogenic E. coli, and 17.64% were extensive drug resistant (XDR). Extended spectrum of β-lactamase (ESBL) genotypes were confirmed in 32.35% isolates and 20.63% isolates harboured ampC gene. One sample (Penaeus semisulcatus) collected from landing centre (L1) harboured all ESBL genotypes blaCTX-M, blaSHV, blaTEM, and ampC genes. Hierarchical clustering of isolates revealed the separation of ESBL isolates into three clusters and non-ESBL isolates into three clusters based on phenotypic and genotypic variations. Based on dendrogram analysis on antibiotic efficacy pattern, carbapenems and β-lactam inhibitor drugs are the best available treatment for ESBL and non-ESBL infections. This study emphasizes the significance of comprehensive surveillance of pathogenic E. coli serogroups that pose serious threat to public health and compliance of AMR antimicrobial resistant genes in seafood that hinder seafood supply chain.

Abstract
Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is a zoonotic pathogen that causes severe illness in humans, often associated with foodborne outbreaks. Antimicrobial resistance among foodborne E. coli has increased over the last decades becoming a public health issue. In this study, the presence and features of STEC were investigated in samples of meat, seafood, vegetables and ready-to-eat street-vended food collected in Chile, using a genomic and microbiological approach. Phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistance profiles were determined, and serotype, phylogroup, sequence type (ST) and phylogenomics were predicted using bioinformatic tools. Three thousand three hundred samples collected in 2019 were screened, of which 18 were positive for STEC strains (0.5%), with stx2a (61.1%) being the predominant stx subtype. The presence of the virulence genes lpfA (100%), iha and ehaA (94.4%), and ehxA, hlyA and saa (83.3%) was confirmed among the STEC strains; the Locus of adhesion and autoaggregation (LAA) was predicted in 14 (77.8%) strains. Strains displayed resistance to colistin (100%), and intermediate resistance to enrofloxacin (11.1%) and chloramphenicol (5.6%). In this regard, mutations in the two-component regulatory system genes pmrA (S29G), pmrB (D283G) and phoP (I44L), and the presence of the qnrB19 gene were confirmed. STEC strains belonged to ST11231 (38.9%), ST297 and ST58 (16.7% each), and ST1635, ST11232, ST446, ST442 and ST54 (5.6% each), and the most frequently detected serotypes were O113:H21 (44.4%), O130:H11 and O116:H21 (16.7% each), and O174:H21 (11.1%). Strains belonging to the international ST58 showed genomic relatedness with worldwide strains from human and non-human sources. Our study reports for the first time the genomic profile of STEC strains isolated from food in Chile, highlighting the presence of international clones and sequence types commonly associated with human infections in different geographical regions, as well as the convergence of virulence and resistance in STEC lineages circulating in this country.

Abstract
Shiga-toxin producing E. coli (STEC) can cause serious illnesses, including hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome. This is the first systematic review of STEC in Brazil, and will report the main serogroups detected in animals, food products and foodborne diseases. Data were obtained from online databases accessed in January 2019. Papers were selected from each database using the Mesh term entries. Although no human disease outbreaks in Brazil related to STEC has been reported, the presence of several serogroups such as O157 and O111 has been verified in animals, food, and humans. Moreover, other serogroups monitored by international federal agencies and involved in outbreak cases worldwide were detected, and other unusual strains were involved in some isolated individual cases of foodborne disease, such as serotype O118:H16 and serogroup O165. The epidemiological data presented herein indicates the presence of several pathogenic serogroups, including O157:H7, O26, O103, and O111, which have been linked to disease outbreaks worldwide. As available data are concentrated in the Sao Paulo state and almost completely lacking in outlying regions, epidemiological monitoring in Brazil for STEC needs to be expanded and food safety standards for this pathogen should be aligned to that of the food safety standards of international bodies.
