Patient Education During Hospitalization From the Perspective of Nurse Managers: A Qualitative Study

The aim of this study was to explore patient education in surgical and medical wards from the perspective of nurse managers. A qualitative descriptive study was conducted with 28 nurse managers from 34 wards in two hospitals, using content analysis. Three themes were identified. The first "Characteristics of patient education" highlights the definitions, goals, and interdisciplinary nature of patient education, emphasizing its role in promoting autonomy and safe discharge. The second "Delivering patient education" focuses on the content, methods, and timing of education. While some managers supported routine care integration, others preferred dedicated sessions, highlighting a need for flexibility in approaches. The third "Evaluating and Improving Patient Education" examines assessment strategies, outcome tracking, and quality maintenance. Effective patient education was linked to reduced readmissions and fewer support calls. Documentation was seen as both essential and burdensome. The study underscores the complexity and benefits of patient education while addressing challenges like time constraints and workload. Recommended strategies include staff training, developing educational tools, structured but flexible approaches, enhanced documentation, and fostering interprofessional collaboration.

Barriers and facilitators to patient education provided by nurses: A mixed-method systematic review

To investigate the factors that facilitate or hinder nurses in providing patient education.

DESIGN

A mixed-method systematic review.

DATA SOURCES

Six databases (Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, MEDLINE and ERIC) were systematically searched for relevant publications.

METHODS

The study was conducted following the JBI for mixed-method systematic reviews, and the reporting followed the PRISMA guideline. Two researchers independently performed literature screening, literature evaluation, data extraction and synthesis. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42023427451.

RESULTS

Twenty-six eligible articles were included, including 15 quantitative articles, 10 qualitative articles and 2 mixed-methods articles. The resultant synthesis of key findings led to the identification of these barriers and facilitators, categorised into five distinct levels: nurse-related factors, organisational factors, patient-related factors, the nurse-patient relationship and interdisciplinary collaboration.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings highlight the factors that facilitate or hinder nurses in providing patient education, suggesting that multifaceted interventions can enhance the practice of patient education in nursing and support the development of appropriate patient education guidelines or public policies.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

This review delineates the facilitators and barriers influencing nurses' provision of patient education, offering an initial framework for nursing managers to craft interventions aimed at enhancing the quality of patient education provided by nurses, consequently elevating the overall quality of nursing.

The Impact of Integrated Patient Education on Short-Term Revisit Rates in Healthcare Settings: A Quality Improvement Project

BACKGROUND

Patient education plays a critical role in healthcare, influencing outcomes and resource utilization. However, effectively integrating patient education into clinical practice remains challenging due to time constraints and inconsistencies in information delivery. Enhancements in Electronic Health Records (EHR) offer potential solutions by facilitating customized, quality education delivery. This study investigates the impact of an EHR-enhanced patient education intervention on short-term revisit rates to healthcare facilities.

METHODS

A quasi-experimental, pre-test/post-test design without a control group was employed at the International Medical Center in Riffa, Bahrain. The intervention consisted of modifications to the EHR system to support patient education, along with staff training on effective education delivery. Patient revisit rates within seven days post-consultation were compared before and after the intervention using chi-square tests and logistic regression, adjusting for potential confounders.

RESULTS

A total of 1,239 patients participated in the study, which was divided into two groups: 754 patients in the pre-intervention group and 485 patients in the post-intervention group. A significant change was observed in the patient revisit rates: in the pre-intervention group, 53.32% of patients (402 out of 754) returned within seven days, compared to 41.44% of patients (201 out of 485) in the post-intervention group, with a p-value < 0.01.

CONCLUSION

Enhancements to EHR systems, combined with comprehensive staff education on patient education, can lead to significant reductions in short-term patient revisits. This underscores the importance of integrating technological and educational interventions in healthcare settings to improve patient outcomes and efficiency.

Methods to assess adults' learning styles and factors affecting learning in health education: A scoping review

OBJECTIVES

To develop learner-centered education, knowledge about learning styles and factors that affect the ability to learn in patients and their significant others are essential. The present scoping review aims to identify current evidence on 1) how learning styles are assessed within health education, for adult patients as well as their significant others and 2) factors affecting learning in adult patients and their significant others who receive health education.

METHODS

Systematic literature searches were performed in ERIC, PubMed, Web of Science and PsycINFO.

INCLUSION CRITERIA

1) participants ≥ 18 years; 2) participants were patients or significant others; 3) assessment of learning style and/or factors affecting learning; and 4) health education as context.

RESULTS

45 articles were included. Learning style within health education can be assessed with multiple choice questions, qualitative methods and a validated questionnaire. Health literacy was the most reported factor affecting learning, followed by anxiety and illness condition.

CONCLUSIONS

Prior to the development of learner-centered education for patients and significant others, learning styles as well as factors affecting learning should be assessed in both patients and significant others.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

The process of learning is complex, and it is a shared responsibility of both the learner and the educator.
