Demographic profiling of Caribbean and United Kingdom student nurses' use of social media for professional development

BACKGROUND

Most students are adept in using technology and have developed skills and confidence utilising SoMe for professional purposes. SoMe is used by both registered nurses and student nurses.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the professional use of SoMe by student nurses in Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and the UK to guide, support and develop implementation of effective and appropriate use of SoMe for professional development.

METHODS

An online cross-sectional survey was completed by student nurses from the three countries. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics.

RESULTS

The main reason for using social media among Caribbean participants was to watch videos or short clips whereas in UK it was downloading articles. Over 75% participants of all ages believed that social media was likely to help their career. There is no social media guidance for student nurses in Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica.

CONCLUSION

Our study demonstrated that social media is embedded in student nurses' professional development throughout their education, with some variation in their use by country. Despite the fundamental place that social media plays in student nurses' professional development, there is no national or international guidance on how student nurses should use social media for professional development.

Guardians of humanity? The challenges of nursing practice in the digital age

Digital technologies have become a crucial factor in nursing. Given the fact that many tasks could also be done by robots or AI systems, the place for the nurse in this scenario is unclear. In what way and to what extent will the implementation of ever more sophisticated technology affect nursing practice? It is the aim of this paper to analyse the potential challenges of nursing practice in the digital age. The analysis is conducted through the lens of new materialism, a set of theoretical models that understand the relationship between humans and technology as dynamic and performative. According to this view, there is no prefixed essence of technology. Rather, the meaning of technology is enacted in concrete practice. The analysis shows that in past debates on technology use in nursing, the nurses' role has been defined as guardians of humanity, defending the patient against the dehumanizing effects of technology. This role has been transferred to the digital age, where it is the duty of nurses to cushion the negative effects of digital technology. As an alternative to this outdated role, nurses should be included in processes of technology design and policymaking. Enabling nursing professionals to shape the circumstances of a digitally enhanced holistic practice may empower their status within the healthcare system and also benefit the patient by contributing to a more person-centred care.

Critical care nurses' experiences of providing care for adults in a highly technological environment: A qualitative evidence synthesis

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

To synthesise the available body of qualitative evidence relating to nurses' perceptions and experiences of care provision in adult critical care environments.

METHODS

The study adhered to ENTREQ (Confidence in Evidence of Reviews of Qualitative Research) guidelines. See Appendix S1. A systematic search of the literature in nine databases was undertaken: CINAHL, Web of Science, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Campbell Collaboration, ProQuest A & I, DART and Lenus. Blind screening to select relevant studies was undertaken, and each selected study was assessed for quality using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme framework. Guided by Thomas and Harden's three-stage approach to thematic analysis, line-by-line coding of participants' verbatim accounts and the researchers' interpretations in the selected studies' findings was undertaken and then organised into higher order analytical themes. Confidence in the findings was reviewed using GRADE-CERQual.

RESULTS

Twelve studies reported in thirteen papers, including 122 nurses, were selected in the final sample for synthesis. Three analytical themes were identified: (a) sometimes machines get all the attention, (b) with experience the patient becomes the focus and (c) technology can't save everybody.

CONCLUSIONS

Providing care for adult patients in a highly technological environment is challenging particularly for novice nurses, who face the potential of technology drawing all their attention. Experienced critical care nurses learn to keep technology in abeyance and deliver person-centred care within the bounds of a technological environment.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

The review supports Locsin's theory of technological competence and highlights that providing care in critical care requires nurses to actively balance attention for the person while managing machines. Experienced nurses achieve this balance and can offer support to novice nurses. Critical care nurse orientation programmes should be underpinned by a holistic approach which addresses the dualism of technology and care.

Engaging Robots as Nursing Partners in Caring: Nursing as Caring Meets Care-Centered Value-Sensitive Design

Given global proliferation of healthcare robots in hospital and home settings, guidance for shared nurse–robot practice is essential if nurses are to be influential participants in the design, implementation, and evaluation of this new practice partnership. Van Wyneberghe's Care-Centered, Value-Sensitive Design-approach, grounded in ethical theory and healthcare robotics, was identified as a likely fit with the grand nursing theory of Nursing as Caring. Following analysis of congruence and dissonance, a model for a new middle range theory was developed. The Dance of Living Caring has the potential to maintain caring as nursing's central value as robotic technology advances.

Embracing the wild profusion: A Foucauldian analysis of the impact of healthcare standardization on nursing knowledge and practice

Standardization has emerged as the dominant principle guiding the organization and provision of healthcare, with standards resultantly shaping how nurses conceptualize and deliver patient care. Standardization has been critiqued as homogenizing diverse patient experiences and diminishing nurses' skills and critical thinking; however, there has been limited examination of the philosophical implications of standardization for nursing knowledge and practice. In this manuscript, I draw on Foucault's philosophy of order and categorization to inform an analysis of the consequences of healthcare standardization for the profession of nursing. I utilize three exemplars to illustrate the impact of the primacy of standardized thinking and practices on nurses, patients and families: pain assessments using the 0-10 pain scale; patient triage emergency departments through the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale; and determination of cause of death within the context of the current opioid crisis. Through each exemplar, I demonstrate that standardization reductively constrains nursing knowledge and the health and healthcare experiences of patients and populations. I argue that the centrality of standardization must be re-envisioned to embrace the complexity of health and more effectively and meaningfully frame nursing knowledge and practice within healthcare systems.

Digital technologies as truth-bearers in health care

In this paper, we explore the idea of digital technologies as truth-bearers in health care and argue that devices like SenseCam, which facilitate reflection and memory recall, have a potentially vital role in healthcare situations when questions of veracity are at stake (e.g., when best interest decisions are being made). We discuss the role of digital technologies as truth-bearers in the context of nursing people with dementia, as this is one area of health care in which the topic of truth-telling has been hotly debated. People with dementia have been excluded from research studies and decisions that affect their lives because they are not regarded as truth-bearers-that is, as being capable of giving truthful accounts of their experiences. Also, considerable research has focused on the ethics of lying to and deceiving people with dementia. Given their increasing prominence in healthcare settings, there has been surprisingly little discussion of what role digital technologies might play in relation to these questions of truth and deception. Drawing on theories from science and technology studies (STS), we explore their possible future role in some of the truth-making processes of health care. In particular, we discuss the potential value of constraints on use of SenseCam to support the accounts of people with dementia as part of their care.
