Abstract
Over the last two decades, the invasiveness of thoracic surgery has decreased along with technological advances and better diagnostic tools, whereas the patient's comorbidities and frailty patterns have increased, as well as the number of early cancer stages that could benefit from curative resection. Poor aerobic fitness, nutritional defects, sarcopenia and "toxic" behaviors such as sedentary behavior, smoking and alcohol consumption are modifiable risk factors for major postoperative complications. The process of enhancing patients' physiological reserve in anticipation for surgery is referred to as prehabilitation. Components of prehabilitation programs include optimization of medical treatment, prescription of structured exercise program, correction of nutritional deficits and patient's education to adopt healthier behaviors. All patients may benefit from prehabilitation, which is part of the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programs. Faster functional recovery is expected in low-risk patients, whereas better clinical outcome and shorter hospital stay have been demonstrated in higher risk and physically unfit patients.

Abstract
Low preoperative aerobic fitness is associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications and delayed recovery in patients with abdominal cancer. Surgical prehabilitation aims to increase aerobic fitness preoperatively to improve patient- and treatment-related outcomes. However, an optimal physical exercise training program that is effective within the short time period available for prehabilitation (<6 weeks) has not yet been established. In this comparative review, studies (n = 8) evaluating the effect of short-term (<6 weeks) moderate-intensity exercise training (MIET) or high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on objectively measured aerobic fitness were summarized. The content of exercise interventions was critically appraised regarding the frequency, intensity, time, type, volume, and - monitoring of - progression (FITT-VP) principles. Three out of four studies evaluating HIIT showed statistically significant improvements in oxygen uptake at peak exercise (VO2peak) by more than 4.9%, the coefficient of variation for VO2peak. None of the two studies investigating short-term MIET showed statistically significant pre-post changes in VO2peak. Although short-term HIIT seems to be a promising intervention, concise description of performed exercise based on the FITT-VP principles was rather inconsistent in studies. Hence, interpretation of the results is challenging, and a translation into practical recommendations is premature. More emphasis should be given to individual responses to physical exercise training. Therefore, adequate risk assessment, personalized physical exercise training prescription using the FITT-VP principles, full reporting of physical exercise training adherence, and objective monitoring of training progression and recovery is needed to ensure for a personalized and effective physical exercise training program within a multimodal prehabilitation program.

Abstract
This study demonstrates the effect of a single high-intensity interval training (HIIT) session on the redox status of rat ovaries with excess adiposity. Forty Wistar female rats (mean (±s.e.m.) weight 94.40 ± 13.40 g) were divided into two groups and fed either a standard diet (SD) or a high-fat diet (HFD) for 62 days. At the end of this period, the rats were subjected to a single HIIT session and were killed 24 h after exercise. Both groups subjected to exercise (SDex and HFDex) generated a significantly higher antioxidant environment by presenting a higher thiol content, which represents a lower oxidation rate of GSH than their respective controls (SD and HFD). The percentage of morphologically normal primary follicles decreased, whereas that of antral follicles increased, in the SDex group. In addition, the HFD group had a higher percentage of degenerated antral follicles than the SD and SDex groups. Cells immunoreactive for α-smooth muscle actin were seen in the cortical stroma and thecal layer enclosing late secondary and tertiary follicles in all groups. Moreover, heme oxygenase and cytochrome P450 family 19 subfamily A member 1 (Cyp19A1) labelling was seen in all antral follicles. Progesterone concentrations were significantly higher in the HFDex than SDex group. In conclusion, this study indicates that a single session of HIIT may result in an improvement in ovary redox status because of metabolic muscle activity by inducing physiological adaptation after exercise in a paracrine manner.
