Abstract
Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a serious pancreatic inflammatory disease that results in pancreatic enzyme activation and autodegradation. Betulinic acid (BA), a pentacyclic triterpene of natural origin that was isolated from several plants, has anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and antioxidant effects that can help with AP. With this study, we aimed to investigate the potential positive effects of BA on l-arginine-induced AP. A total of 24 male rats were divided into four groups (control, BA, AP and BA + AP). Animals in the BA group were given BA 50 mg/kg/day for 7 days. AP was induced by administering two doses of 250-mg/100-g l-arginine to animals in the AP group. The animals in the BA + AP group were administered 50-mg/kg/day BA (gavage) for 7 days and two doses of 250-mg/100-g l-arginine on the seventh day. BA pretreatment inhibited the increased lipase activity caused by AP and showed protective activity against oxidative damage to pancreatic tissue. It decreased the severity of inflammation by suppressing the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines while increasing the level of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. It showed a protective effect on pancreatic tissue by inhibiting tumour necrosis factor (TNF-α) and Bax expression. The findings of the study show that BA exhibits multifaceted protective activity in experimental AP induced with l-arginine.

Abstract
The purpose of this review is to examine the current scientific literature regarding the interplay between the exocrine and endocrine pancreas, specifically the role of the exocrine pancreas in the pathogenesis of canine diabetes mellitus. β-cell death caused by exocrine pancreatic inflammation is thought to be an under-recognised contributor to diabetes mellitus in dogs, with up to 30 % of canine diabetic patients with concurrent evidence of pancreatitis at post-mortem examination. Current diagnostics for pancreatitis are imprecise, and treatments for both diseases individually have their own limitations: diabetes through daily insulin injections, which has both welfare and financial implications for the stakeholders, and pancreatitis through treatment of clinical signs, such as analgesia and anti-emetics, rather than targeted treatment of the underlying cause. This review will consider the evidence for exocrine pancreatic inflammation making an active contribution to pancreatic β-cell loss and insulin-deficiency diabetes in the dog and explore current and potential future diagnostic and treatment avenues to improve outcomes for these patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aims of this study were to describe diseases, complications and outcomes associated with the use of feeding tubes in a population of sick cats with appetite disturbance managed at an internal medicine referral service. METHODS Clinicopathological data from cats receiving nasoenteral (NE) or oesophagostomy (O) tubes were studied. Cats were categorised according to their underlying disease and divided into subgroups (NE or O tube). The following factors associated with survival were analysed: disease category, type of tube and return to appetite. RESULTS Included in the study were 112 cats, representing 118 cases. Of the 118 cases, 98 (83%) and 20 (17%) received NE or O tubes, respectively. The most common underlying conditions were digestive (13.5%), hepatobiliary (11%) and upper urinary tract (11%) disorders. Hepatobiliary (50%) and upper respiratory tract (30%) conditions were predominant in the O tube group. Digestive (15%) and upper urinary tract (12%) diseases were more common in the NE tube group. Complications following tube placement occurred in 22/118 cases (18.6%). The global survival rate was 73% and did not differ between NE (71.4%) and O tube (80%) groups (P = 1.00) or disease categories (P = 0.61). Return of appetite before feeding tube removal occurred in 56 cases (47%), within a median of 3 days (range 1-30) and was not associated with mirtazapine administration (P = 1.00). Appetite returned earlier for cats with NE tubes (3 days, range 1-17) than for those with O tubes (33 days, range 5-60; P <0.05). Voluntary food intake was positively associated with survival (odds ratio 15.17). After discharge and feeding tube retrieval, return of appetite was observed in 67% of cases. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Feeding tubes were predominantly placed for the management of appetite disturbance in cats with digestive, hepatobiliary and upper urinary tract diseases. While complications were frequent, they were mostly mild, easily managed and did not preclude feeding tube use. Return to appetite occurred in a large proportion of cats during or after assisted enteral feeding and was associated with survival.

Abstract
Biliary peritonitis is a growing concern in the canine patient and a thorough understanding of the disease will lead to better treatment outcomes. This article reviews the human and veterinary literature pertaining to biliary peritonitis including both scientific reviews and original publications. Compared to human medicine, biliary peritonitis can be difficult to diagnose preoperatively. Multiple risk factors exist increasing the likelihood of development of biliary peritonitis. Treatment recommendations center on stabilization, surgical cholecystectomy, and postoperative supportive care. Clinically, further studies on treatment and prevention in veterinary medicine are warranted.

Abstract
Background Pancreatitis in cats, although commonly diagnosed, still presents many diagnostic and management challenges. Objective To summarize the current literature as it relates to etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of pancreatitis in cats and to arrive at clinically relevant suggestions for veterinary clinicians that are based on evidence, and where such evidence is lacking, based on consensus of experts in the field. Animals None. Methods A panel of 8 experts in the field (5 internists, 1 radiologist, 1 clinical pathologist, and 1 anatomic pathologist), with support from a librarian, was formed to assess and summarize evidence in the peer reviewed literature and complement it with consensus clinical recommendations. Results There was little literature on the etiology and pathogenesis of spontaneous pancreatitis in cats, but there was much in the literature about the disease in humans, along with some experimental evidence in cats and nonfeline species. Most evidence was in the area of diagnosis of pancreatitis in cats, which was summarized carefully. In contrast, there was little evidence on the management of pancreatitis in cats. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Pancreatitis is amenable to antemortem diagnosis by integrating all clinical and diagnostic information available, and recognizing that acute pancreatitis is far easier to diagnose than chronic pancreatitis. Although both forms of pancreatitis can be managed successfully in many cats, management measures are far less clearly defined for chronic pancreatitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the lipidemia status and serum concentrations of cholesterol and triglycerides of dogs when initially examined for hospitalization in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a veterinary teaching hospital and to determine whether these variables were predictive of survival to hospital discharge. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. ANIMALS 549 client-owned sick (n = 398) and healthy (151) dogs. PROCEDURES Medical records of sick dogs hospitalized in the ICU at a veterinary teaching hospital between January 1, 2012, and September 30, 2015, and of healthy dogs evaluated at the teaching hospital during the same time frame were reviewed. Data collection included signalment, results of initial physical and clinicopathologic examinations, treatments, diagnosis, and survival to hospital discharge. Lipidemia status and serum concentrations of cholesterol and triglycerides were compared between healthy and sick dogs and between sick dogs that did and did not survive to hospital discharge. Regression analysis was performed to determine whether these variables were predictive of survival to hospital discharge in dogs. RESULTS Factors associated with increased odds of sick dogs not surviving to hospital discharge were hypocholesterolemia (OR, 1.87; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04 to 3.34), hypertriglyceridemia (OR, 3.20; 95% CI, 2.00 to 5.13), and concurrent hypocholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia (OR, 55.7; 95% CI, 3.2 to 959.6) at the time of initial evaluation. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results indicated that hypocholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia, alone or in combination, at initial examination were negative prognostic indicators for survival of dogs hospitalized in the ICU and that these conditions were easily identified with routine serum clinicopathologic analyses. Abstract
Background Esophageal feeding tubes are commonly used to provide enteral nutrition to cats, but their use is associated with adverse effects. Objectives To evaluate the complications associated with e‐tube placement in cats and to identify factors predisposing to these complications. Animals Cats that had an esophageal feeding tube placed (n = 248). Methods This was a retrospective case review in which clinical records were interrogated across 2 referral centers to identify records of cats that had esophageal tubes placed. Clinical data were collected for signalment, clinical indication, method of placement, time of removal, and any complications. Logistic regression was then employed to assess the odds of an increase in complications, including infection and death. Results For those cats that survived to discharge, tubes were in place for a median of 11 days, ranging from 1 to 93 days. Complications occurred in 35.8% of the cats, with the most common being tube dislodgement (14.5%), followed by stoma site infections (12.1%). Cats receiving glucocorticoids or oncolytic agents (OR = 3.91; 95% CI, 1.14‐13.44) and with discharge at the stoma site (OR = 159.8; CI, 18.9‐1351) were at an increased odds of developing a stoma site infection, whereas those with a lower weight (OR = 1.33; 95% CI, 1.02‐1.75) or (pancreatic [OR = 4.33; 95% CI, 1.02‐18.47], neoplastic [OR = 15.44; 95% CI, 3.67‐65.07], respiratory [OR = 19.66; 95% CI, 2.81‐137.48], urogenital [OR = 5.78; 95% CI, 1.15‐28.99], and infectious diseases [OR = 11.57; 95% CI, 2.27‐58.94]) had an increased odds of death. The duration of time in place and the cat being discharged with the tube in place were not associated with an increased risk of infection or death. Conclusions and clinical importance Owners should be made aware of the potential risks involved and their predisposing factors.

Abstract
The neurokinin 1 receptor (NK1R) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis (AP). Maropitant is an NK1R antagonist that is widely used as an antiemetic in dogs and cats. In the present study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory action of maropitant in a mouse model of AP. AP was induced in BALB/c mice by intraperitoneal administration of cerulein, and maropitant was administered subcutaneously at a dose of 8 mg/kg. We assessed the mRNA expression levels of NK1R and substance P (SP) in the pancreatic tissue via real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. In addition, the effect of maropitant on plasma amylase, lipase, and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels was measured in each mouse. Inflammatory cell infiltration in the pancreas was assessed by myeloperoxidase (MPO) staining. Our results showed that AP induction significantly elevated the mRNA expression of SP in the pancreatic tissue. Treatment with maropitant significantly lowered plasma amylase and IL-6 levels. In addition, treatment with maropitant inhibited the infiltration of MPO-positive cells in the pancreas. The present study suggests that maropitant possesses an anti-inflammatory activity, in addition to its antiemetic action.

Abstract
Enteral nutrition improves survival rates and hospitalization times. Some diseases affecting the oral cavity can hinder spontaneous nutrition; in these cases the use of an esophagostomic tube can resolve nutritional problems. The innovative method described in this study is easier and more rapid than those currently known because the end of the tube does not need to be extracted from the oral cavity and then be reinserted with a number of maneuvers into the esophagus. The procedure does not require specific instruments, endotracheal intubation, and nor does it require the head to be moved or lifted. In addition, it can be carried out without the support of an assistant even with big or giant dogs. The new method involves the introduction of hemostatic forceps into the oral cavity, which pass through the esophagus wall and skin, then the distal extremity of the tube is firmly held between the extremity of the forceps and oriented caudally. The forceps, holding the tube, need to be retracted in the esophagus and then pushed ventrally and aborally in order to pass the esophagus stoma, without needing to extract the tube from the oral cavity and thus the risk of tube kinking.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the use of ProcalAmine as a source of parenteral nutrition in hospitalized dogs and to report complications possibly referable to its use. DESIGN Retrospective study. SETTINGS Private veterinary teaching hospital. ANIMALS Thirty-six dogs hospitalized in ICU receiving ProcalAmine between October 2010 and March 2013. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS The most common underlying disease process in this population of dogs was trauma (n = 8). Median duration of administration was 4 days and median resting energy requirement provided via ProcalAmine was 33%. ProcalAmine was administered via central catheters in 86% of cases and via peripheral catheters in 14% of cases. The overall mechanical complication rate was 19%. Metabolic complications possibly associated with ProcalAmine administration were documented in 12/36 dogs. Hyponatremia was most commonly identified (n = 6) followed by hyperglycemia (n = 4), hypochloremia (n = 2), azotemia (n = 2), metabolic alkalosis (n = 2), hyperchloremia (n = 1), and metabolic acidosis (n = 1). CONCLUSION ProcalAmine appears to be relatively safe and a viable option for parenteral nutrition in ill and injured dogs. Due to the potential for electrolyte derangements and other metabolic complications, daily monitoring of these parameters is advisable.
