Abstract
A prospective study was performed on hospitalized conscious dogs. The objectives were: 1) to evaluate the feasibility and reliability of portable infrared pupillometry using a measure of photo light reflexes, 2) to identify parameters influencing measures, and 3) to compare parameters before and after the administration of analgesia. Twenty-nine dogs were included. Pupillometry was feasible by a single person. There was an excellent reliability for the evaluation of pupil diameter. There was poor to good reliability for the other parameters. There was an association between weight and mean pupil diameter (estimate = 0.1 mm, CI95 = [0.0; 0.1], P = 0.02), mean diameter variation (estimate = 0.2%, CI95 = [0.0; 0.4], P = 0.01), and mean velocity (estimate = 0.08 ms, CI95 = [0.03; 0.13], P = 0.002). Male dogs had a significantly larger mean pupil diameter than females (estimate = 1.3 mm, CI95 = [0.1; 2.5], P = 0.03). Independently of weight and sex, there was an association between mean pupil diameter and pain score: the higher the pain score, the lower the mean pupil diameter. There was a correlation between mean pupil diameter and morphine dose (ρ = -0.78, P = 0.0004). There was no significant difference in pupil diameter, velocity, and latency before and after analgesic administration. In conclusion, results do not support the use of PLR measurement by pupillometry as a pain assessment technique in hospitalized conscious dogs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Electroretinography (ERG) is used prior to cataract removal surgery to assess retinal function. We aimed to replicate and improve upon previous studies by performing a full ECVO protocol and by examining the retina post-surgery in all patients. ANIMALS STUDIED One hundred twenty-seven eyes from 67 dogs were included in the study. PROCEDURES A full ECVO protocol electroretinography, which includes extensive rod and cone analysis, was performed on all dogs presenting for cataract surgery. RESULTS Our main findings were that amplitudes, but not implicit times of rod responses decreased with advanced cataracts. Amplitudes of the single flash rod and rod flicker responses were significantly lower in eyes with mature cataracts, and the former also decreased in hypermature cataracts. Cone flicker amplitude responses were also significantly lower in eyes with mature and hypermature cataracts. However, mixed single flash rod-cone and cone responses, with the exception of the mixed rod-cone a-wave amplitude in eyes with hypermature cataracts, were unaffected by cataract stage. The b-wave amplitude of the scotopic, mixed rod-cone, and photopic cone responses were affected by age and decreased by an average of 2.9, 7.5, and 1.5 μV/year, retrospectively (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Lower ERG amplitudes in canine cataract patients may result from aging or the presence of advanced cataracts and may not indicate the presence of retinal disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the use of a modified pupillometry technique in dogs without chemical restraint. MATERIALS AND METHODS Following dark adaptation, pupillary light reflexes were assessed in six dogs with sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome, in the unaffected eye of eight dogs with unilateral primary glaucoma ("predisposed"), and in 11 healthy dogs. Responses to red, blue and white lights were recorded and relative pupil sizes subsequently determined based on video recordings of each test. RESULTS Mean testing time was 2.3 minutes (range 1.8 to 3.1 minutes), excluding time for dark adaptation. Baseline pupil size in dogs with sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome was greater than in normal and predisposed eyes. Pupil constriction was reduced in predisposed compared to normal and sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome eyes when stimulated with high-intensity blue light. Compared to normal eyes, those with sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome had reduced pupil constriction when stimulated with low- and high-intensity red light, low-intensity blue light and white light. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Quantitative measures of pupil function were obtained from healthy and diseased eyes without the need for chemical restraint. Further investigations are warranted to validate the technique and evaluate its use in the management of canine glaucoma.

Abstract
We describe two dogs with persistent visual impairment after initially mild intoxication signs following ingestion of Ornithogalum arabicum plant material. Additionally, a 12-year analysis of the Dutch Poisons Information Centre database additionally reveals that ingestion of Ornithogalum plant material can be potentially life-threatening to companion animals. Further studies are necessary to confirm the involvement of cardiac glycoside-like toxins present in Ornithogalum arabicum and the toxicity of these substances to the retina. Intoxication with Ornithogalum arabicum leads to visual impairment and irreversible blindness in dogs. Intoxication with Ornithogalum arabicum may be life-threatening in companion animals. Ornithogalum arabicum and other species are suspected to contain heart glycosides.

Abstract
Objective To perform detailed analysis of retinal changes in dogs with SARDS using optical coherence tomography (OCT), funduscopy, and molecular analysis. Animals Subjects were 29 dogs from 12 US states and Canada diagnosed with SARDS by 8 ophthalmologists. An additional 7 eyes from 5 deceased SARDS dogs were used for molecular and histological analysis. Procedures Dogs were evaluated using chromatic pupil light reflex testing (cPLR), and electroretinography (ERG); subjects underwent complete ophthalmic examination, including funduscopy, retinal photography, and OCT, in addition to complete laboratory analysis, blood pressure evaluation, abdominal and thoracic radiographs, and computerized tomography (CT) imaging to assess possible systemic abnormalities. Histology and immunohistochemistry analysis was performed in 2 SARDS eyes. Microarray analysis was performed in 5 SARDS retinas. Results Thirty‐eight percent of patients had <1‐mm wide retinal detachments (RD) on OCT analysis, which could not be detected by funduscopy or retinal photographs. Systemic hypertension did not seem to be a contributing factor (RD 22.2%; ND 20%, Odds ratio = 1.1). No dogs showed neoplastic changes by thoracic or abdominal radiography, or CT imaging. There was no statistically significant difference in age (RD 7.9 ± 1.9 years (mean ± SD); ND 7.6 ± 1.7 years, p = 0.69) or duration of blindness prior to presentation (RD 18 ± 7 days (mean±SD); ND 21 ± 12 days, p = 0.28). Microarray and histology analysis of SARDS eyes revealed molecular changes suggestive of immune‐mediated damage. Conclusions Observed histological, molecular, and OCT changes are highly suggestive of immune‐mediated damage in SARDS eyes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize ocular and neurologic findings, causes, and treatment outcomes of dogs with optic neuritis. PROCEDURE Medical records from dogs with a diagnosis of optic neuritis at North Carolina State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Hospital between 1983 and 2016 were reviewed. RESULTS Ninety-six cases (20 unilateral, 76 bilateral), comprised of 38 males and 58 females with a mean age of 6.1 ± 3.0 years (range 0.5-13), were identified. Seventy-four cases were presented for vision loss, and 42 had other concurrent neurologic abnormalities. Funduscopic findings included optic nerve head elevation (n = 92), peripapillary retinal edema or separation (n = 37), retinal hemorrhage or dilation of retinal vasculature (n = 23), and multiple inflammatory foci in the peripapillary region (n = 13). Retrobulbar optic neuritis was diagnosed in four cases. The final diagnoses included the following: multifocal meningoencephalitis of unknown etiology (MUE, n = 35), isolated optic neuritis (I-ON, n = 42), neoplasia (n = 10), microbial infection (n = 6), orbital inflammation (n = 2), and suspected ivermectin toxicosis (n = 1). Dogs with I-ON were more commonly male, and medium-to-large breed, when compared to dogs with MUE. Follow-up was available in 72 cases, 50 of which remained blind, 10 had partial visual improvement, and 12 were assessed as having normal vision in the affected eye(s). CONCLUSION Optic neuritis was most commonly associated with multifocal MUE or was isolated as the sole neurologic finding, with a similar incidence between the two groups. Findings suggest that a clinical syndrome of isolated optic neuritis, distinct from multifocal MUE, occurs in dogs.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate a chromatic pupillometry protocol for specific functional assessment of rods, cones, and intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) in dogs. Methods Chromatic pupillometry was tested and compared in 37 dogs in different stages of primary loss of rod, cone, and combined rod/cone and optic nerve function, and in 5 wild-type (WT) dogs. Eyes were stimulated with 1-s flashes of dim (1 cd/m2) and bright (400 cd/m2) blue light (for scotopic conditions) or bright red (400 cd/m2) light with 25-cd/m2 blue background (for photopic conditions). Canine retinal melanopsin/Opn4 was cloned, and its expression was evaluated using real-time quantitative reverse transcription-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Results Mean ± SD percentage of pupil constriction amplitudes induced by scotopic dim blue (scDB), scotopic bright blue (scBB), and photopic bright red (phBR) lights in WT dogs were 21.3% ± 10.6%, 50.0% ± 17.5%, and 19.4% ± 7.4%, respectively. Melanopsin-mediated responses to scBB persisted for several minutes (7.7 ± 4.6 min) after stimulus offset. In dogs with inherited retinal degeneration, loss of rod function resulted in absent scDB responses, followed by decreased phBR responses with disease progression and loss of cone function. Primary loss of cone function abolished phBR responses but preserved those responses to blue light (scDB and scBB). Although melanopsin/Opn4 expression was diminished with retinal degeneration, melanopsin-expressing ipRGCs were identified for the first time in both WT and degenerated canine retinas. Conclusions Pupil responses elicited by light stimuli of different colors and intensities allowed differential functional assessment of canine rods, cones, and ipRGCs. Chromatic pupillometry offers an effective tool for diagnosing retinal and optic nerve diseases.
