Diabetic foot ulcer classification assessment employing an improved machine learning algorithm

BACKGROUND

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) are a severe consequence of diabetes that, if left untreated, can lead to amputation, blindness, renal failure, and other serious complications. The high treatment expense and length of treatment for this therapeutic technique are both disadvantages. Despite the effectiveness of this strategy, a distant, cost-effective, and comfortable DFU diagnostic therapy is necessary.

OBJECTIVE

This study proposed the Advanced Machine Learning Practical Method for Diabetic Foot Ulcer Classification.

METHODS

This unique and cost-effective healthcare solution uses Practical Methodologies with the reinforcement learning algorithm for DFU imaging. The categorization was based on constant technological advancements, and the benefits of Machine Learning (ML) for use in DFU treatment are numerous, including enhanced clinical decision-making based on Ulcer classification and healing progress. The ML greatly impacted DFU data analysis, with categorization and risk assessment among the findings.

RESULTS

The machine-learning technique can potentially create a paradigm shift by providing a 92.5% classification accuracy evaluation in the diabetic foot Ulcer problem. According to Clustering Scenario Analysis of Diabetic Foot Ulcer, when compared to Mild To Moderate Localized Cellulitis (Cluster 1 produces classification efficiency from 71% to 88%), Moderate To Severe Cellulitis (Cluster 2 delivers classification efficiency from 85% to 97%), Moderate To Severe Cellulitis With Ischemia (Cluster 3 produces classification efficiency from 90% to 98%), and Life-Or Limb-Threatening Infection (Cluster 4), the results were promising (Cluster 4 makes classification efficiency from 93.5% to 98.2%). The efficiency of this is Cluster 78.45 percent higher than the existing procedure.

CONCLUSIONS

The proposed Advanced Machine Learning Practical Method demonstrates significant improvements in DFU classification accuracy and efficiency, presenting a cost-effective and effective alternative to traditional diagnostic approaches.

A Survey on Impact of Internet of Medical Things Against Diabetic Foot Ulcer

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we explore the intricate domain of Diabetic Foot Ulcers (DFU) through the development of a comprehensive framework that encompasses diverse operational scenarios. The focus lies on the identification and classification assessment of diabetic foot ulcers, the implementation of smart health management strategies, and the collection, analysis, and intelligent interpretation of data related to diabetic foot ulcers. The framework introduces an innovative approach to predicting diabetic foot ulcers and their key characteristics, offering a technical solution for forecasting. The exploration delves into various computational strategies designed for intelligent health analysis tailored to patients with diabetic foot ulcers. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this paper is to present a technical solution for forecasting diabetic foot ulcers, utilizing computational strategies for intelligent health analysis. METHODS: Techniques derived from social network analysis are employed to conduct this research, focusing on diverse computational strategies geared towards intelligent health analysis for patients with diabetic foot ulcers. The study highlights methodologies addressing the unique challenges posed by diabetic foot ulcers, with a central emphasis on the integration of Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) in prediction strategies. RESULTS: The main results of this paper include the proposal of IoMT-based computing strategies covering the entire spectrum of DFU analysis, such as localization, classification assessment, intelligent health management, and detection. The study also acknowledges the challenges faced by previous research, including low classification rates and elevated false alarm rates, and proposes automatic recognition approaches leveraging advanced machine learning techniques to enhance accuracy and efficacy. CONCLUSION: The proposed IoMT-based computing strategies present a significant advancement in addressing the challenges associated with predicting diabetic foot ulcers. The integration of advanced machine learning techniques demonstrates promise in improving accuracy and efficiency in diabetic foot ulcer localization, marking a positive stride towards overcoming existing limitations in previous research.

Impact of Diabetic Foot Multidisciplinary Unit on Incidence of Lower-Extremity Amputations by Diabetic Foot

BACKGROUND

One of the most devastating complications of diabetes is diabetes-related foot disease (DFD), which is a priority for public health systems. The 2016-2020 Catalonia Health Plan aimed to reduce the incidence of total and major lower-extremity amputations (LEAs) due to DFD by 10% in the population aged 45-74 years. The aim of the present study was to compare the incidence of LEA-DFD 5 years before and after the creation of the Diabetic Foot Multidisciplinary Unit at our Hospital.

METHODS

We prospectively collected all cases of LEA-DFD performed at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2020. Cases of LEA-DFD performed from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. The incidence of LEA-DFD between these periods was compared.

RESULTS

A total of 457 LEAs due to DFD were performed in 316 patients. We observed a reduction of 27.9% [CI: 23.7-32.1%] in the incidence of total LEA in the 2016-2020 period in comparison with the period 2011-2016 (0.8 ± 0.1 vs. 1.1 ± 0.3 per 10.000 inhabitants/year, p < 0.001), as well as a reduction of 49.3% [CI: 44.6-53.9%] in the incidence of major LEA-DFD (0.15 ± 0.1 vs. 0.30 ± 0.1 per 10.000 inhabitants/year, p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The implementation of a Diabetic Foot Multidisciplinary Unit resulted in a significant reduction in the rate of amputations due to DFD in the population with diabetes in North Barcelona.
