Sexual differences as adaptation to the different gender roles in the frog Xenopus laevis Daudin

1. Various physiological parameters were determined in fed, adult, male and female Xenopus laevis acclimated to 20 degrees C and with a light: dark cycle of 12:12. The results were compared for sex differences. 2. There were significant differences in food intake, oxygen consumption, and motor activity with lower values for each parameter in males than in females (Table 1). 3. Further significant differences were found in the plasma concentrations of calcium, total lipids, and aldosterone (Table 3), in the somatic indices of fat body and gonads, in the glycogen and protein content of the liver (Table 4), and in the activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, fructose-1,6-diphosphatase, and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase in the liver (Table 5). 4. It is assumed that the observed differences are essentially a result of differences in body growth and gametogenesis between the sexes. The lack of capacity of males to store glycogen and lipids in the male gonads is a further explanation for the differences.

The effect of photoperiod on changes in plasma, glucose, cholesterol, and free fatty acids during cold acclimation in frogs

1. Many previous experiments on cold acclimation in frogs were carried out on animals maintained in total darkness. I tested the effect of photoperiod on changes in plasma FFA, glucose, and cholesterol during cold acclimation. 2. Hematocrit levels were lower whereas plasma FFA levels were higher in frogs kept in total darkness during cold acclimation. 3. Plasma glucose and plasma cholesterol levels were not affected by photoperiod during cold acclimation.

Fatty acid distribution in the bovine pre- and postpartum testis

Testes from fetuses, calves, bulls and recently castrated animals were analyzed for total lipids, lecithin, cephalin, triglycerides, diglycerides, cholesteryl esters and cholesterol. Total lipids increase somewhat with age, but in the castrated animal the increase is more marked. Phospholipid content increases with age, but decreases in the castrated animal. Cholesterol decreases and triglyceride increases after birth and in the castrated animal. Polyunsaturated acids increase with age in all lipid classes. Eicosatrienoic acid is more abundant in fetal testicular lipids than in testes removed after birth. In the castrated testis there is a general decrease in the unsaturated fatty acids. Acids of the omega6 family are the predominant polyunsaturated acids and increase somewhat with age in all lipids. The omega3 family of polyunsaturated acids appears mostly toward the end of fetal life and increases after birth. Acids of the linoleate family reach approximately 25% of total acids in most lipid classes at maturity whereas the omega3 acids range from 1 to 9%.
