Effect of the accelerator design on the position of the effective electron source

Monte Carlo study on effective source to surface distance for electron beams from a mobile dedicated IORT accelerator

Purpose

The effective source to surface distance (SSDeff) for different combinations of energy/applicator size of the electron beam produced by the light intraoperative accelerator, a mobile dedicated intraoperative radiotherapy accelerator, has been calculated in this study.

Methods

Both ionometric dosimetry and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation were followed to obtain the SSDeff for different combinations of electron energy/applicator size. Simulations were performed using Monte Carlo Nuclear Particles (MCNP) MC code. Measurements were performed by Advance Markus chamber and inside a polymethyl methacrylate slab phantom. Inverse square law method was employed to determine the SSDeff from acquired dosimetry data.

Result

With increasing the applicator diameter at a given energy, SSDeff is also increased. The same result is obtained with increasing the electron beam energy for a given applicator size. The results of MC-based SSDeff for 10 cm diameter reference applicator at different energies were in a good accordance with those obtained by ionometric dosimetry. The maximum and mean differences between the results were 1·1 and 0·6%, respectively.

Conclusions

The results of this study showed that SSDeff of intraoperative electron beam is highly dependent on the applicator size and is a mild function of electron beam energy. These facts are in accordance with those reported for conventional electron beam. The good agreement between the results of MC simulation and ionometric dosimetry confirms the application of MCNP code in modelling of intraoperative electron beam and obtaining the intended parameters.

Monitor unit calculations for external photon and electron beams: Report of the AAPM Therapy Physics Committee Task Group No. 71

A protocol is presented for the calculation of monitor units (MU) for photon and electron beams, delivered with and without beam modifiers, for constant source-surface distance (SSD) and source-axis distance (SAD) setups. This protocol was written by Task Group 71 of the Therapy Physics Committee of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and has been formally approved by the AAPM for clinical use. The protocol defines the nomenclature for the dosimetric quantities used in these calculations, along with instructions for their determination and measurement. Calculations are made using the dose per MU under normalization conditions, D'0, that is determined for each user's photon and electron beams. For electron beams, the depth of normalization is taken to be the depth of maximum dose along the central axis for the same field incident on a water phantom at the same SSD, where D'0 = 1 cGy/MU. For photon beams, this task group recommends that a normalization depth of 10 cm be selected, where an energy-dependent D'0 ≤ 1 cGy/MU is required. This recommendation differs from the more common approach of a normalization depth of dm, with D'0 = 1 cGy/MU, although both systems are acceptable within the current protocol. For photon beams, the formalism includes the use of blocked fields, physical or dynamic wedges, and (static) multileaf collimation. No formalism is provided for intensity modulated radiation therapy calculations, although some general considerations and a review of current calculation techniques are included. For electron beams, the formalism provides for calculations at the standard and extended SSDs using either an effective SSD or an air-gap correction factor. Example tables and problems are included to illustrate the basic concepts within the presented formalism.

[Experimental determination of the virtual source point of high-energy electron beams for clinical application]

In radiation therapy, electron beams are applied in many cases without the aid of treatment planning systems. When the geometrical conditions differ from the measurement conditions, the position of the virtual electron source must be known in order to convert the dosimetric data. According to the literature, there are multiple procedures for measuring the position of the virtual electron source, however these partially result in considerably different values. Therefore, the intended purpose of the virtual electron source must be clarifiedfirst, e.g. whether the correction of the field size or the calculation of the output in relationship to the focus-surface distance. Additionally, the scope of application must be clearly defined because the determined value, even for the same measuring method, is strongly dependent on the measurement range used for the evaluation. We investigated all common procedures and developed a new and very time-saving method. The method is presented in this paper, and the results and their impact on the application of electron beams under non-standard conditions are demonstrated and discussed.

A semi-empirical method for calculating the effect of air gap space on output factors on electron beam dose distributions

BACKGROUND

A simple approach to calculate the effect of air gap on output factors on electron beam dose distribution is presented.

METHODS

The method accounts for variations of pencil beam parameters using a model developed by Bruinvis et al. [4,5]. The evaluation of this method is based on measurements of the output factors at various distances between the final collimating device and the phantom surface.

RESULTS

Comparison of calculations and measurements of output factors for various cone sizes and 0, 2 and 4 cm air gaps show agreement to within approximately 1.5% for electron energies of 6-13.5 MeV and field sizes of 5.3-10 cm in diameter.

CONCLUSION

The accuracy of this semi-empirical method can be considered clinically acceptable and reduces the amount of experimental work needed.
