Effect of the temporal pattern of a given noise dose on TTS in guinea pigs

The effect of time regime in noise exposure on the auditory system and behavioural stress in the zebrafish

Anthropogenic noise of variable temporal patterns is increasing in aquatic environments, causing physiological stress and sensory impairment. However, scarce information exists on exposure effects to continuous versus intermittent disturbances, which is critical for noise sustainable management. We tested the effects of different noise regimes on the auditory system and behaviour in the zebrafish (Danio rerio). Adult zebrafish were exposed for 24 h to either white noise (150 ± 10 dB re 1 μPa) or silent control. Acoustic playbacks varied in temporal patterns—continuous, fast and slow regular intermittent, and irregular intermittent. Auditory sensitivity was assessed with Auditory Evoked Potential recordings, revealing hearing loss and increased response latency in all noise-treated groups. The highest mean threshold shifts (c. 13 dB) were registered in continuous and fast intermittent treatments, and no differences were found between regular and irregular regimes. Inner ear saccule did not reveal significant hair cell loss but showed a decrease in presynaptic Ribeye b protein especially after continuous exposure. Behavioural assessment using the standardized Novel Tank Diving assay showed that all noise-treated fish spent > 98% time in the bottom within the first minute compared to 82% in control, indicating noise-induced anxiety/stress. We provide first data on how different noise time regimes impact a reference fish model, suggesting that overall acoustic energy is more important than regularity when predicting noise effects.

Techniques for distinguishing between impulsive and non-impulsive sound in the context of regulating sound exposure for marine mammals

Regulations designed to mitigate the effects of man-made sounds on marine mammal hearing specify maximum daily sound exposure levels. The limits are lower for impulsive than non-impulsive sounds. The regulations do not indicate how to quantify impulsiveness; instead sounds are grouped by properties at the source. To address this gap, three metrics of impulsiveness (kurtosis, crest factor, and the Harris impulse factor) were compared using values from random noise and real-world ocean sounds. Kurtosis is recommended for quantifying impulsiveness. Kurtosis greater than 40 indicates a sound is fully impulsive. Only sounds above the effective quiet threshold (EQT) are considered intense enough to accumulate over time and cause hearing injury. A functional definition for EQT is proposed: the auditory frequency-weighted sound pressure level (SPL) that could accumulate to cause temporary threshold shift from non-impulsive sound as described in Southall, Finneran, Reichmuth, Nachtigall, Ketten, Bowles, Ellison, Nowacek, and Tyack [(2019). Aquat. Mamm. 45, 125-232]. It is known that impulsive sounds change to non-impulsive as these sounds propagate. This paper shows that this is not relevant for assessing hearing injury because sounds retain impulsive character when SPLs are above EQT. Sounds from vessels are normally considered non-impulsive; however, 66% of vessels analyzed were impulsive when weighted for very-high frequency mammal hearing.

Effects of noise on fishes: what we can learn from humans and birds

In this paper we describe the masking of pure tones in humans and birds by manmade noises and show that similar ideas can be applied when considering the potential effects of noise on fishes, as well as other aquatic vertebrates. Results from many studies on humans and birds, both in the field and in the laboratory, show that published critical ratios can be used to predict the masked thresholds for pure tones when maskers consist of complex manmade and natural noises. We argue from these data that a single, simple measure, the species critical ratio, can be used to estimate the effect of manmade environmental noises on the perception of communication and other biologically relevant sounds. We also reason that if this principle holds for species as diverse as humans and birds, it probably also applies for all other vertebrates, including fishes.

Predicting temporary threshold shifts in a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus): the effects of noise level and duration

Noise levels in the ocean are increasing and are expected to affect marine mammals. To examine the auditory effects of noise on odontocetes, a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was exposed to octave-band noise (4-8 kHz) of varying durations (<2-30 min) and sound pressures (130-178 dB re 1 microPa). Temporary threshold shift (TTS) occurrence was quantified in an effort to (i) determine the sound exposure levels (SELs) (dB re 1 microPa(2) s) that induce TTS and (ii) develop a model to predict TTS onset. Hearing thresholds were measured using auditory evoked potentials. If SEL was kept constant, significant shifts were induced by longer duration exposures but not for shorter exposures. Higher SELs were required to induce shifts in shorter duration exposures. The results did not support an equal-energy model to predict TTS onset. Rather, a logarithmic algorithm, which increased in sound energy as exposure duration decreased, was a better predictor of TTS. Recovery to baseline hearing thresholds was also logarithmic (approximately -1.8 dB/doubling of time) but indicated variability including faster recovery rates after greater shifts and longer recoveries necessary after longer duration exposures. The data reflected the complexity of TTS in mammals that should be taken into account when predicting odontocete TTS.

Tonic efferent-induced cochlear damping in roosting and echolocating mustached bats

The activity of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system in mustached bats, Pteronotus p. parnellii, was studied by monitoring changes in the mechanical properties of the cochlea. The changing properties were expressed by the decay time (DT) of cochlear microphonic potentials produced by transient-induced ringing (Henson et al., 1995). Tape-recorded roost noise (biosonar and communication sounds) produced sudden, marked decreases in DT when presented to the contralateral ear of animals adapted to the quiet. When the animals were first removed from their roosts the DT was relatively short (1.2-1.5 ms) but this gradually lengthened by about 0.5-1.0 ms as they rested in a quiet chamber. The time required to reach a stable, quiet-adapted state after noise exposure varied with SPL and exposure time; in many experiments recovery was in the range of 90-120 min. When quiet-adapted bats were isolated and allowed to fly and echolocate for 20 min, the DTs measured within a few minutes after the end of the flight were also short and only slowly returned to longer preflight values. The administration of a single dose of gentamicin, which blocks MOC effects, greatly reduced the amount of suppression (damping) observed after periods of noise and echolocation sound exposure. We conclude that tonic MOC activity is induced by the natural vocalizations and roost noise and this activity probably regulates and protects the highly resonant cochlear partition.

Acute acoustic trauma. A retrospective study of influencing factors and different therapies in 268 patients

The files of 268 patients with acute acoustic trauma acquired during military service were analysed in a retrospective study. The following factors were examined: age, profession, degree of hearing loss, audiometric contour, and drug treatment. No influence of age or profession on recovery of hearing loss could be detected. The absolute hearing gain, defined as the difference between the hearing loss at onset and, on average, 7 days later, was dependent on the degree of initial hearing loss. The relative hearing gain, defined as absolute hearing gain divided by initial hearing loss, was independent of the degree of initial injury. The audiometric contour after the acoustic trauma had no prognostic relevance. Nine different types of drug treatment were compared in a subgroup of patients (n=199), in all of whom treatment was started within 2 days of the acoustic trauma. There were no significant differences in relative hearing gain between the nine types of treatment. Patients receiving early treatment had significantly better hearing one week after the acoustic trauma, as compared with the group of patients (n=69) not receiving treatment during the first 7 days. However, it was not possible to determine retrospectively whether this difference was due to treatment effects, or whether it was due to the exclusion of spontaneous remissions among those who were neither examined nor treated within the first 7 days.
