Perception and production of rise-fall intonation in American English

At the segmental level, the rate of speaking affects the degree of physical undershoot of articulatory targets and the resulting perception. Little is known regarding evidence of these effects at the suprasegmental level, particularly in intonation. In this study, the effect of rate of speaking on fundamental frequency and on perceptual judgments of peak pitch in a rise-fall intonation pattern was investigated. First, speakers produced rise-fall intonations in sentence contexts at slow, normal, and fast speaking rates. Peak fundamental frequencies (F0) of the slow productions were significantly lower than those of the normal or fast productions. The mean normal rate production of the word Miami was used as a model for the target word in a series of subsequent perceptual experiments. Altering the duration of the target word to represent slow, normal, and fast rates of speaking did not affect listener judgment of peak pitch. Finally, the pitch of the target word was measured in a sentence context. No differences between peak pitch in isolation or in sentence context were found. It was concluded that the production and perception of this form of intonation was not subject to the effects of rate that are seen at the segmental level.

A model of the perceptual asymmetry between peaks and troughs of frequency modulation

Pitch discrimination at peaks of frequency modulation is better than at troughs [L. Demany and K. I. McAnally, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 96, 706-715 (1989)]. A similar asymmetry emerges within a time-domain pitch perception model based on autocorrelation. The model requires the following assumptions: (a) The neural discharge patterns must be temporally sharpened to a single narrow pulse per period (possibly by neural convergence within the cochlear nucleus). (b) Autocorrelation must be implemented as a cross correlation between the neural pulse train and a delayed pulse train convolved with a short kernel function. This kernel function must be asymmetric in time. (c) Pitch discrimination must rely on higher-order modes of the autocorrelation function. This particular implementation of the autocorrelation model produces modes that are sharper for peaks than for troughs, and thus accounts for the pitch discrimination asymmetry observed experimentally. As a by-product it can account for "hyperacute" discrimination observed at peaks of triangular modulation.

The pitch of short-duration fundamental frequency glissandos

Pitch perception for short-duration fundamental frequency (F0) glissandos was studied. In the first part, new measurements using the method of adjustment are reported. Stimuli were F0 glissandos centered at 220 Hz. The parameters under study were: F0 glissando extents (0, 0.8, 1.5, 3, 6, and 12 semitones, i.e., 0, 10.17, 18.74, 38.17, 76.63, and 155.56 Hz), F0 glissando durations (50, 100, 200, and 300 ms), F0 glissando directions (rising or falling), and the extremity of F0 glissandos matched (beginning or end). In the second part, the main results are discussed: (1) perception seems to correspond to an average of the frequencies present in the vicinity of the extremity matched; (2) the higher extremities of the glissando seem more important; (3) adjustments at the end are closer to the extremities than adjustments at the beginning. In the third part, numerical models accounting for the experimental data are proposed: a time-average model and a weighted time-average model. Optimal parameters for these models are derived. The weighted time-average model achieves a 94% accurate prediction rate for the experimental data. The numerical model is successful in predicting the pitch of short-duration F0 glissandos.

This work extends previous studies on the perceptual asymmetry between the local maxima and minima of wide frequency modulations (FMs) [L. Demany and K. I. McAnally, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 96, 706-715 (1994); L. Demany and S. Clément, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 97, 2454-2459 (1995); L. Demany and S. Clément, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 98, 2515-2523 (1995)]. In experiment 1, subjects had to discriminate frequency shifts in the temporally central vertex of V- and A-shaped FMs imposed on 200-ms sinusoidal tone bursts. The precise shapes of these FMs varied in eight steps from quasi-triangles (with a durationless central vertex) to quasi-squares (with a long-duration central vertex). The central vertex was either a minimum or a maximum, but in each case the corresponding frequency was near 1000 Hz and the FM span was about 0.5 oct. For each FM shape, the discrimination threshold was lower when the vertex was a maximum than when it was a minimum, but (in four subjects out of five) this difference decreased monotonically as the FM became less and less triangular. FM shape had a remarkably small effect on the discrimination of the maxima, and the thresholds measured for the sharpest maxima were unexpectedly low. In subsequent experiments, subjects had to discriminate frequency shifts in the starting point or the final point of unidirectional FMs (tone glides) that spanned about 0.5 oct in 100 ms. The relevant frequency extremum was near 1000 Hz in each condition. At the final point of the glides, discrimination was better for rising glides than for falling glides. At the starting point of the glides, discrimination was better for falling glides than for rising glides. Thus discrimination was always better when the relevant frequency extremum was a maximum than when it was a minimum, and this effect was produced both "forward" and "backward." The latter fact suggests that the perceptual asymmetry of FM originates at least partly from central factors.
