Abstract
There is growing recognition of the association between neighbourhood factors and individuals' health. This systematic review examines the associations between urban neighbourhood built and social environment characteristics with different measures of physical functioning among mid- and older-aged adults over 45 years, focusing on cross-sectional and longitudinal study designs. It responds to the increase in publications on this topic following the COVID-19 pandemic. The systematic review included 25 studies written in English from 2018 onwards sourced from 8 databases. Studies were imported into Covidence and reviewed following the 'Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis' (PRISMA) protocols. Findings were assessed according to 13 neighbourhood environment variables: aesthetics, crime safety, greenness and parks, land use mix and destinations, neighbourhood disadvantage, pedestrian/street infrastructure, public transport, residential density, social environment, street connectivity, traffic safety, walkability, and composite variables. Significant associations in the expected direction were found for land use mix and destinations, walkability, crime safety, greenness and parks, social environment, and neighbourhood disadvantage with physical functioning in mid- and older-aged adults. Weaker evidence of expected associations was found for residential density and aesthetics. Future research avenues on this topic include investigating built and social neighbourhood environments in diverse geographies and populations, considering housing status and length of exposure to the neighbourhood environment, using longitudinal surveys over longer time periods and objective measurements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interest in how the neighborhood environment impacts age-related health conditions has been increasing for decades. Epigenetic changes are environmentally derived modifications to the genome that alter the way genes function-thus altering health status. Epigenetic age, a biomarker for biological age, has been shown to be a useful predictor of several age-related health conditions. Consequently, its relation to the neighborhood environment has been the focus of a growing body of literature. OBJECTIVE We aimed to describe the scope of the evidence on the relationship between neighborhood environmental characteristics and epigenetic age. METHODS Using scoping review following methods established by Arksey and O'Malley, we first defined our research questions and searched the literature in PubMed, PsycINFO, and EMBASE. Next, we selected the literature to be included, and finally, we analyzed and summarized the information. RESULTS Nine articles met the inclusion criteria. Most studies examined deprivation as the neighborhood characteristic of interest. While all studies were observational in design, the articles included diverse participants, including men and women, adults and children, and multiple ethnicities. Results demonstrated a relationship between the neighborhood environment and epigenetic age, whether the characteristic of interest is socioeconomic or physical. CONCLUSIONS Overall, studies concluded there was a relationship between neighborhood characteristics and epigenetic age, whether the characteristic of interest was socioeconomic or physical. However, findings varied based on how the neighborhood characteristic and/or epigenetic age was measured. Furthermore, a paucity of investigations on physical characteristics was noticeable and warrants increased attention.

Abstract
An estimated 250 million people worldwide suffer from knee osteoarthritis (KOA), with older adults having greater risk. Like other age-related diseases, residents of high-deprivation neighborhoods experience worse KOA pain outcomes compared to their more affluent neighbors. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between neighborhood deprivation and pain severity in KOA and the influence of epigenetic age acceleration (EpAA) on that relationship. The sample of 128 participants was mostly female (60.9%), approximately half non-Hispanic Black (49.2%), and had a mean age of 58 years. Spearman bivariate correlations revealed that pain severity positively correlated with EpAA (ρ = 0.47, p ≤ 0.001) and neighborhood deprivation (ρ = 0.25, p = 0.004). We found a positive significant relationship between neighborhood deprivation and EpAA (ρ = 0.47, p ≤ 0.001). Results indicate a mediating relationship between neighborhood deprivation (predictor), EpAA (mediator), and pain severity (outcome variable). There was a significant indirect effect of neighborhood deprivation on pain severity through EpAA, as the mediator accounted for a moderate portion of the total effect, PM = 0.44. Epigenetic age acceleration may act as a mechanism through which neighborhood deprivation leads to worse KOA pain outcomes and may play a role in the well-documented relationship between the neighborhood of residence and age-related diseases.

Abstract
Although neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage is negatively related to overall physical activity, prior studies reveal a complex relationship between disadvantage and particular walking behaviors. While disadvantage is associated with reduced recreational walking through a hypothesized "fear-of-crime" mechanism, the built environment in disadvantaged neighborhoods may encourage utilitarian walking. To date, no study has assessed how disadvantage relates to dog walking, a distinct walking behavior that is neither strictly recreational nor utilitarian but represents a key mechanism through which pet ownership may affect human health. We employ a large (n = 19,732) dataset from the Dog Aging Project to understand how neighborhood disadvantage is associated with dog walking when controlling for individual-, household-, and environmental-level factors. We find that dog owners in more disadvantaged neighborhoods report less on-leash walking activity compared to owners in advantaged neighborhoods and discuss the possibility of a fear-of-crime mechanism underlying this association. These findings improve our understanding of the relationship between neighborhood disadvantage and physical function and highlight the need for public health interventions that encourage dog ownership to consider neighborhood disadvantage.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between neighborhood disadvantage and poor self-rated health for a nationally representative sample of Blacks and Whites in young adulthood, 18 to 30 years old. Data were from 16 waves (1997–2013) of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 cohort (N = 6820 individuals; observations = 58,901). Utilizing the stress process model and generalized estimating equations to account for the correlated nature of multiple responses over time, results show that neighborhood disadvantage increases the odds of poor health for all groups. This positive association is strongest in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods and is heightened as young adults age. There are also notable race and gender differences. For example, Blacks, who live in the most highly disadvantaged neighborhoods, seem to be somewhat shielded from the most deleterious effects of poor neighborhood conditions compared to their White counterparts. Despite greater proportions of Blacks residing in harsh neighborhood environments, Black men experience better health than all other groups, and the health of Black women is no worse compared to White men or women. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed.

Abstract
Objective: Falls in older adults are a major public health issue, and it is
unclear whether the neighborhood environment is associated with falls among this group.
This cross-sectional study investigated whether hilly neighborhood environmental factors
were associated with fall status (falls or fear of falling) in rural Japanese older
adults. Materials and Methods: Data obtained from 965 participants aged 65 years and
older living in Unnan City, Shimane Prefecture, Japan, in 2017 were analyzed. Fall status
was assessed based on the 1-year fall incidence (yes/no) for the past year and fear of
falling (yes/no) using a self-report questionnaire. For hilly neighborhood environmental
factors, the mean elevation and land slope were assessed using a geographic information
system. The logistic regression model examined the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence
intervals (CIs) of fall status in quartiles for elevation and land slope, respectively,
and was adjusted for confounders. Results: Falls and fear of falling were observed in 16.8% and 43.2% of
participants, respectively. Falls were associated with elevation (OR 1.99, 95% CI
1.17–3.37 for Q2 vs. Q1; OR 2.02, 95% CI 1.19–3.44 for Q3 vs. Q1) and land slope (OR 1.74,
95% CI 1.04–2.93 for Q3 vs. Q1; OR 1.74, 95% CI 1.04–2.93 for Q4 vs. Q1). Fear of falling
was associated with elevation (OR 1.78, 95% CI 1.19–2.65 for Q3 vs. Q1) and land slope (OR
1.51, 95% CI 1.01–2.25 for Q4 vs. Q1). Conclusion: Our study found that elevation and land slope as hilly
neighborhood environment factors were positively associated with falls or fear of falling
among older adults living in rural Japan. Prospective observational studies that
investigate the effects of region-specific environmental factors on falls among older
adults should be conducted.

Abstract
We investigate the prospective association between neighbourhood-level disadvantage and cardiovascular disease (CVD) among mid-to-older aged adults and whether physical activity (PA) mediates this association. The data come from the HABITAT project, a multilevel longitudinal investigation of health and wellbeing in Brisbane. The participants were 11,035 residents of 200 neighbourhoods in 2007, with follow-up data collected in 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2016. Multilevel binomial regression was used for the cross-sectional analysis and mixed-effect parametric survival models were used for the longitudinal analysis. Models were adjusted for age, sex, education, occupation, and household income. Those with pre-existing CVD at baseline were excluded from the longitudinal analyses. The mediated effect of PA on CVD was examined using multilevel generalized structural equation modelling. There was a total of 20,064 person-year observations across the five time-points clustered at three levels. Results indicated that the incidence of CVD was significantly higher in the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods (OR 1.50; HR 1.29) compared with the least disadvantaged. Mediation analysis results revealed that 11.5% of the effect of neighbourhood disadvantage on CVD occurs indirectly through PA in the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods while the corresponding figure is 5.2% in the more advantaged areas. Key findings showed that neighbourhood disadvantage is associated with the incidence of CVD, and PA is a significant mediator of this relationship. Future research should investigate which specific social and built environment features promote or inhibit PA in disadvantaged areas as the basis for policy initiatives to address inequities in CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia, resulting from loss of muscle mass and function, is highly prevalent in the ageing societies and is associated with risk of falls, frailty, loss of independence, and mortality. It is important to identify environmental risk factors, so that evidence-based interventions to prevent sarcopenia can be implemented at the population level. This study aimed to examine the potential effect of several objectively measured neighborhood environmental factors on longitudinal change of muscle mass and function among older adults living in rural Japanese towns where the population is ageing. METHODS This study was based on data from the Shimane CoHRE Study conducted by the Center for Community-based Healthcare Research and Education (CoHRE) at Shimane University in 3 rural towns in the Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Subjects older than 60 years, who participated in an annual health examination in 2016 and any follow-up years until 2019, i.e., 4 possible time points in total, were included (n = 2526). The skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) and grip strength were assessed objectively for each year as a measure of muscle mass and function, respectively. Neighborhood environmental factors, i.e., hilliness, bus stop density, intersection density, residential density, and distance to a community center were measured by geographic information systems (GIS). Linear mixed models were applied to examine the potential effect of each neighborhood environmental factor on the change of SMI and grip strength over time. RESULTS Males living far from community centers had a less pronounced decline in SMI compared to those living close to community centers. Females living in areas with higher residential density had a less pronounced decline in grip strength compared to those living in areas with lower residential density. CONCLUSIONS Neighborhood environmental factors had limited effects on change of SMI and grip strength among rural older adults within the 3 years follow up. Further long-term follow up studies are necessary by also taking into account other modifiable neighborhood environmental factors.

Abstract
This paper advances crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) theory and practice by introducing a holistic and integrated crime prevention theory called Third-Generation CPTED. We use Third-Generation CPTED to expand both the situational focus of traditional CPTED and the social ecology/neighbourhood focus of Second-Generation CPTED, by creating a new theory that integrates human motivation and aspirations within a neighbourhood Liveability Hierarchy. Central to our theory is the planning concept of liveability and, because safety from crime, fear, and victimization is such an integral part of quality of life, we present two underlying themes on which liveability depends: public health and sustainability. We propose some theoretical assumptions and propositions that underpin the theory and suggest areas for future research. Our contention is that a holistic and integrative Third-Generation CPTED elevates liveability from the role of basic infrastructure and habitat to providing residents with opportunities to enhance their own personal aspirations and improve their quality of life.

Abstract
This systematic review included 23 quantitative studies that estimated associations between aspects of the neighbourhood built environment and physical function among adults aged ≥45 years. Findings were analysed according to nine aspects of the neighbourhood built environment: walkability, residential density, street connectivity, land use mix, public transport, pedestrian infrastructure, aesthetics, safety and traffic. Evidence was found for a positive association of pedestrian infrastructure and aesthetics with physical function, while weaker evidence was found for land use mix, and safety from crime and traffic. There was an insufficient number of studies for walkability, residential density, street connectivity and access to public transport.
