The effect of rebound exercise on cognition and balance of females with overweight and obesity

Balance issues have been reported to be common among females with overweight or obesity with associated fall risks. Despite the increasing reports of the negative impacts of obesity on balance and cognition, there is a scarcity of research aimed at evaluating effective interventions. To examine the effects of rebound exercises on cognition and balance among females with overweight and obesity. This Quasi-experimental study used the purposive sampling method to recruit 20 female students (aged 17-35 years) with overweight and obese at the Evangel University Akaeze, Ebonyi State Nigeria. Rebound exercise intervention was administered to all participants at the gym for 30 minutes in each session, three times a week for six weeks, while their cognitive performances, stationary balance, and dynamic balance were measured pre-and post-trial using Trail Marking Test Apparatuses, Unilateral Pedal Tests, and Meter Backward Walk Test respectively. There was a significant (p < 0.001) difference in the participants' cognition values across weeks 1, 3, and 6 with a progressive improvement over time. There was also a significant (p < 0.05) difference in the participants' static and dynamic balance values across weeks 1, 3, and 6 with a progressive improvement in balance performance over time. Rebound exercise significantly improved the cognition and balance of females with overweight or obese. This finding suggests a promising intervention to improve balance and cognitive-related problems in this population. The Effect of 12 Weeks of Rebound Therapy Exercise Training on Walking Ability of Spinal Cord Injury Patients

Background

Walking ability is a crucial factor for recovery and rehabilitation of spinal cord injury (SCI) patients.

Objectives

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 12 weeks of rebound therapy on walking parameters in SCI patients.

Methods

Thirty members of Isfahan Spinal Cord Injury Association participated in this experimental study using a convenience sampling method. This study was approved by the ethics committee of the University of Isfahan (IR.UI.REC.1400.118). The participants were randomly assigned to control and rebound groups using a matched randomization method. Data were collected before and after 12 weeks of rebound therapy exercise (three sessions per week) in the walking laboratory, using a seven-camera 3D motion capturing system (Qualisys motion analysis). The final data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA in SPSS software (significance level p < .05).

Results

Rebound therapy training significantly improved all dependent variables (p < .05) except hip rotation, indicating its effectiveness for enhancing walking ability.

Conclusion

Given the importance of walking function, we recommend the use of rebound therapy training as an exercise rehabilitation method for spinal cord injury patients.

Effects of rebound exercises on balance and mobility of people with neurological disorders: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Therapeutic rebound exercise is gaining popularity among the general population, but its effectiveness in individuals with neurological impairments remains uncertain. To shed light on this, a systematic review was conducted between November 2021 and March 2023 to study the impact of rebound exercise on balance and mobility in this group.

METHODS

Six databases were searched. Studies were included if written in English, peer-reviewed, had original research data and assessed the effect of rebound exercise in adults with neurological disorders. The outcomes measured were balance and mobility. Two reviewers independently appraised study quality using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program for Randomized Controlled Trials. Finally, a meta-summary of the included studies was completed, and a meta-analysis was performed using RevMan software version 5.3 to determine the effectiveness of the intervention.

RESULTS

Five studies were included comprising 130 participants aged 31.32±7.67 to 58±12 years, 72% male and 28% female. Participants were in-patients with stroke (49%), multiple sclerosis (24%), Parkinson's disease (15%) and spinal cord injury (12%). The included papers had moderate to high methodological quality. The timed up-and-go test revealed that the rebound group participants could walk 6.08 seconds quicker over three to eight weeks. Pooled results show that rebound exercise significantly improves mobility (-0.53[-0.94, -0.11], p = 0.01), but no significant improvement was observed in balance.

CONCLUSION

Rebound exercise has shown the potential to improve mobility in people with neurological disorders. However, the findings should be in the context that the included studies are few and participants were in in-patient settings. PROSPERO registration: CRD42021298030.

Health-related quality of life after injury: examining the roles of perceived daily-life stress and injury perceptions

PURPOSE

The present study aimed to examine the effects of injury perceptions and perceived daily stress on health-related quality of life (HRQL) of individuals affected by a physical injury.

METHODS

Two hundred and forty injured individuals completed questionnaires assessing HRQL (Medical Outcome Health Survey short-form 36), perceived daily-life stress (Perceived Stress Scale), and injury perceptions (Brief-InjPQ).

RESULTS

The direct effects of stress on HRQL scores were not moderated by gender. Emotional representation of the injury significantly mediated the links between PSS and all HRQL subscales only among women, but not among men. However, the mediation of the HRQL total score by emotional representations was significant for both genders. In addition, treatment control perceptions of the injury mediated the link between PSS and self-assessed health among men but not women, and injury-self perceptions mediated the link between PSS and physical functioning among men but not women.

CONCLUSION

These findings underscore the importance of perceived daily stress, gender, and injury perceptions as key factors for explaining variance in HRQL following injury. In addition to their conceptual contributions, the findings have clinical implications for treating injured populations.

Trampoline Versus Resistance Training in Young Adults: Effects on Knee Muscles Strength and Balance

Purpose: Trampoline parks are becoming popular in many countries, providing recreational facilities for children and adults. This study investigated the effects of trampoline training on knee muscles strength and balance in young adults. Methods: Twenty-six participants (14 males, 12 females) were randomized into trampoline training (TT) and resistance training (RT) groups to undergo a 6-week supervised intervention program (2 × 30 min per week). TT group performed basic trampoline exercises while the RT group performed resistance training targeting lower extremities muscles. Peak knee extension and flexion torque, postural sway characteristics, and Y balance test (YBT) performance were evaluated before and after the intervention. A mixed model analysis of variance (group × time) was applied. Results: After training there were significant improvements in knee extension torque (mean difference_post-pre [95% CI], TT: 0.27 [0.00, 0.54] N∙m/kg, RT: 0.31 [0.09,0.54] N∙m/kg, p = .001), knee flexion torque (TT: 0.25 [0.17,0.33] N∙m/kg, RT: 0.21 [0.08,0.34] N∙m/kg, p < .001), and dynamic balance (YBT composite scores, mean difference_post-pre [95% CI], TT: 4.9 [-0.3, 10.2]%, RT: 5.2 [2.4,8.0]%, p = .001). No difference between groups was found. Conclusion: Trampoline training can be as effective as resistance training for improving knee muscles strength and dynamic balance in young men and women.

Comparison of the Effect of 8-Week Rebound Therapy-Based Exercise Program and Weight-Supported Exercises on the Range of Motion, Proprioception, and the Quality of Life in Patients with Parkinson's Disease

Introduction

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive disorder that mainly affects the central nervous system and, consequently, the patient's functional status. This study aimed to compare the effect of 8-week rebound therapy-based exercise program and weight-supported exercises on the range of motion, proprioception, and the quality of life in patients with PD.

Methods

Twenty patients were randomly divided into two equal groups of weight-bearing exercises and rebound exercise with no significant differences in age, weight, and height. The variables of the range of motion, proprioception, and the quality of life were assessed in pre- and posttest. Data were analyzed using repeated measure ANOVA and t-test at a significant level of P < 0.05.

Results

All of the variables in the two groups were significantly improved after 8 weeks of exercise, whereas the improvement rate in the rebound therapy group was more than the weight-bearing exercises group in range of motion (134.60 ± 13.22 vs. 118.38 ± 12.48), proprioception (7.60 ± 3.22 vs. 10.38 ± 2.48), and the quality of life (147.60 ± 13.22 vs. 118.38 ± 12.48) of the patients (P < 0.001 for all variables).

Conclusions

Given that both rebound and weight-supported exercises are effective on improving the range of motion, proprioception, and the quality of life of people with PD, it is recommended that the benefits of these exercises to be used in physical rehabilitation programs. However, rebound therapy exercises have had a greater effect on people with PD, and it seems better to use these exercises more than others.
