Bioinspired 1T-MoS2-based aerogel beads for efficient freshwater harvesting in harsh environments

Freshwater scarcity is one of the most critical issues worldwide, particularly in arid regions, stemming from population growth and climate change. Inspired by the hydrophilic bump structures of desert beetles, 1T-MoS2-based aerogel beads with porous structures and CaCl2-crystal loading (termed as MoAB-m@CaCl2-n) were prepared for freshwater harvesting. Metallic-phase MoS2 nanospheres exhibit excellent photothermal conversion abilities, facilitating solar-driven water desorption and evaporation. Owing to the synergistic effect of its localized surface features, hydrophilic groups, and dispersive CaCl2 particles, MoAB-2@CaCl2-2 efficiently harvests water from atmosphere with a superior moisture adsorption capacity (0.18-0.82 g g-1) at a wide range of relative humidity (10 %-70 %). Under one-sun illumination, MoAB-2@CaCl2-2 demonstrates an outstanding solar-driven water evaporation rate of 2.25 kg m-2h-1. The water evaporation rate from soil (water content = 20 %) is 1.19 kg m-2h-1, which is sufficient for sustainable freshwater generation from the soil in arid regions. More importantly, the multifunctional MoAB-2@CaCl2-2-based homemade freshwater generation prototype delivers a certain amount of water harvesting (0.99 g g-1 day-1) on a rainy day and provides an impressive daily freshwater yield (53.7 kg m-2) under natural sunlight. The integrated device exhibits excellent efficiency and practicality and offers a feasible method for freshwater harvesting in harsh environments.

Upscaling of dispersion in gas-liquid absorption on an inclined surface

We extend the Taylor-Aris dispersion theory to upscale the gas absorption into a viscous incompressible liquid flowing along an inclined surface. A reduced-order model of advection-dispersion-reaction is developed with the aid of Reynolds decomposition and cross-sectional averaging techniques. The upscaled model allowed evaluation of the dispersion, advection, and absorption kinetics as a function of the Peclet number (Pe) and the Damköhler number (Da). The transport and kinetics parameters for the limiting cases of nonabsorption and absorption dominant are also evaluated. The upscaled model is solved analytically, and the obtained solution is used to evaluate the upscaled mass transfer between the gas and liquid. The results for the overall Sherwood number identify three regions: (i) advection dominant, (ii) transition where both advection and absorption play a role, and (iii) absorption dominant. The scaling relation between the Sherwood number (Sh) and the Da for the last region was determined to follow Sh∼Da^{1/2}. It is also revealed that in the first two regions, the Sherwood number versus the Peclet number exhibits a bell-shaped (or Gaussian) behavior, suggesting an optimal Pe that maximizes mass transfer between gas and liquid in these regions. The model and insights presented have the potential to be applied in a wide range of industrial separation processes involving the interaction of a gas exposed to a liquid flowing downward on an inclined surface under gravity.

Bioinspired asymmetric amphiphilic surface for triboelectric enhanced efficient water harvesting

The effective acquisition of clean water from atmospheric water offers a potential sustainable solution for increasing global water and energy shortages. In this study, an asymmetric amphiphilic surface incorporating self-driven triboelectric adsorption was developed to obtain clean water from the atmosphere. Inspired by cactus spines and beetle elytra, the asymmetric amphiphilic surface was constructed by synthesizing amphiphilic cellulose ester coatings followed by coating on laser-engraved spines of fluorinated ethylene propylene. Notably, the spontaneous interfacial triboelectric charge between the droplet and the collector was exploited for electrostatic adsorption. Additionally, the droplet triboelectric nanogenerator converts the mechanical energy generated by droplets falling into electrical energy through the volume effect, achieving an excellent output performance, and further enhancing the electrostatic adsorption by means of external charges, which achieved a water harvesting efficiency of 93.18 kg/m² h. This strategy provides insights for the design of water harvesting system.

Thin liquid films down a vertical microfiber: Effect of curvature elasticity

In this paper, we use a long-wave model to examine how the curvature elasticity modifies the famous Plateau-Rayleigh mechanism and the formation of viscous beads on a vertically placed fiber. By blending the analyses of linear stability, weakly nonlinear stability, exact nonlinear solutions, and numerical simulations, the effects of spontaneous curvature, surface bending rigidity, Gaussian curvature, and Van der Waals forces on the Plateau-Rayleigh mechanism and breakup of the liquid film are examined. The spontaneous curvature and surface bending rigidity are stabilizing the interface, which can reduce the amplitude and wave speed of nonlinear traveling waves and retard the breakup of film caused by Van der Waals attractions. However, the Gaussian curvature effect reinforces the Plateau-Rayleigh mechanism, which accelerates the rupture of film.

Improving heat and mass transfer rates through continuous drop-wise condensation

Drop-wise condensation (DWC) has been the focus of scientific research in vapor condensation technologies since the 20th century. Improvement of condensation rate in DWC is limited by the maximum droplet a condensation surface could sustain and the frequency of droplet shedding. Furthermore, The presence of non-condensable gases (NCG) reduces the condensation rate significantly. Here, we present continuous drop-wise condensation to overcome the need of hydrophobic surfaces while yet maintaining micron-sized droplets. By shifting focus from surface treatment to the force required to sweep off a droplet, we were able to utilize stagnation pressure of jet impingement to tune the shed droplet size. The results show that droplet size being shed can be tuned effectively by tuning the jet parameters. our experimental observations showed that the effect of NCG is greatly alleviated by utilizing this technique. An improvement by multiple folds in mass transfer compactness factor compared to state-of-the-art dehumidification technology was possible.

Liquid Films Falling Down a Vertical Fiber: Modeling, Simulations and Experiments

We provide a new framework for analyzing the flow of an axisymmetric liquid film flowing down a vertical fiber, applicable to fiber coating flows and those in similar geometries in heat exchangers, water treatment, and desalination processes. The problem considered is that of a viscous liquid film falling under the influence of gravity and surface tension on a solid cylindrical fiber. Our approach is different from existing ones in that we derive our mathematical model by using a control-volume approach to express the conservation of mass and axial momentum in simple and intuitively appealing forms, resulting in a pair of equations that are reminiscent of the Saint-Venant shallow-water equations. Two versions of the model are obtained, one assuming a plug-flow velocity profile with a linear drag force expression, and the other using the fully-developed laminar velocity profile for a locally uniform film to approximate the drag. These can, respectively, model high- and low-Reynolds number regimes of flow. Linear stability analyses and fully nonlinear numerical simulations are presented that show the emergence of traveling wave solutions representing chains of identical droplets falling down the fiber. Physical experiments with safflower oil on a fishing line are also undertaken and match the theoretical predictions from the laminar flow model well when machine learning methods are used to estimate the parameters.

Experimental study of a string-based counterflow wet electrostatic precipitator for collection of fine and ultrafine particles

Wet electrostatic precipitators (WESP) have been widely studied for collecting fine and ultrafine particles, such as diesel particulate matter (DPM), which have deleterious effects on human health. Here, we report an experimental and numerical simulation study on a novel string-based two-stage WESP. Our new design incorporates grounded vertically aligned polymer strings, along which thin films of water flow down. The water beads, generated by intrinsic flow instability, travel down the strings and collect charged particles in the counterflowing gas stream. We performed experiments using two different geometric configurations of WESP: rectangular and cylindrical. We examined the effects of the WESP electrode bias voltage, air stream velocity, and water flow rate on the number-based fractional collection efficiency for particles of diameters ranging from 10 nm to 2.5 μm. The collection efficiency improves with increasing bias voltages or decreasing airflow rates. At liquid-to-gas (L/G) as low as approximately 0.0066, our design delivers a collection efficiency over 70% even for fine and ultrafine particles. The rectangular and cylindrical configurations exhibit similar collection efficiencies under nominally identical experimental conditions. We also compare the water-to-air mass flow rate ratio, air flow rate per unit collector volume, and collection efficiency of our string-based design with those of previously reported WESPs. The present work demonstrates a promising design for a highly efficient, compact, and scalable two-stage WESPs with minimal water consumption.Implications: Wet Electrostatic Precipitators (WESPs) are highly effective for collecting fine particles in exhaust air streams from various sources such as diesel engines, power plants, and oil refineries. However, their large-scale adoption has been limited by high water usage and reduced collection efficiencies for ultrafine particles. We perform experimental and numerical investigation to characterize the collection efficiency and water flow rate-dependence of a new design of WESP. The string-based counterflow WESP reported in this study offers number-based collection efficiencies >70% at air flow rates per collector volume as high as 4.36 (m³/s)/m³ for particles of diameters ranging from 10 nm - 2.5 μm, while significantly reducing water usage. Our work provides a basis for the design of more compact and water-efficient WESPs.

Three-Dimensional Multilayer Vertical Filament Meshes for Enhancing Efficiency in Fog Water Harvesting

Novel types of vertical filament mesh (VFM) fog harvesters, 3D VFM fog harvesters, and multilayer 3D VFM fog harvesters were developed by mimicking the water-harvesting nature of desert beetles and the spider silks from fog. Four different types of polymer filaments with different hydrophilic-hydrophobic properties were used. The polymer filaments were modified with the polyurethane-sodium alginate (PU-SA) mixture solution, and a simple spraying method was used to form alternating 3D PU-SA microbumps. Polymer VFMs exhibited a higher fog-harvesting efficiency than the vertical metal meshes. Moreover, the hydrophobic VFM was more efficient in fog harvesting than the hydrophilic VFM. Notably, the fog-harvesting efficiency of all VFMs increased by 30-80% after spraying with the mixed PU-SA solution to form a 3D geometric surface structure (3D PU-SA microbumps), which mimicked the desert beetle back surface. This modification caused the fog-harvesting efficiency of PTFE 3D VFM to be thrice higher than that of Fe VFM. This increase was attributed to the improved synergistic effects of fog capturing, droplet growing, and droplet shedding. The multilayer VFMs were more efficient in fog harvesting than the single-layer VFMs because of a larger droplet capture area. The fog-harvesting efficiency of two-layer and four-layer polymer VFMs was approximately 35% and about 45% higher than that of the single-layer polymer VFMs, respectively. The four-layer PTFE 3D VFM with the type B PU-SA bump surface (bump/PU-SA) had the highest efficiency of 287.6 mL/m²/h. Besides the high fog-harvesting efficiency, the proposed polymer VFMs are highly stable, cost-effective, rust-free, and easy to install in practical applications. These advantages are ascribed to the elasticity of the polymer filaments. This work provides new ideas and methods for developing high-performance fog harvesters such as the 3D VFM.

A bi-polyoxometallate-based host-guest metal-organic framework

Anionic POMs prefer to bond with positive metal cations instead of neutral or negative organic ligands. Therefore, it is challenging to synthesize POM-based MOFs, let alone bi-POM-based host-guest MOFs. In this work, an unprecedented bi-POM-based host-guest MOF, Na[Ni(enMe)2]4[Ni(enMe)2(H2O)2]2{[Ni6(μ3-OH)3(enMe)3 (SIP)1.5(B-α-PW9O34)]2[H3PNiW11O40]}·5enMe·33H2O (1), with Ni6-capped [PW9O34] as the node of the host framework and Keggin-type [PNiW11O40] units as the guest was synthesized. 1 showed excellent chemical stability towards aqueous solutions of pH 2-12 at both ambient and boiling temperature, providing opportunities for its application in fresh water harvesting from air.
