Fully stabilized multi-TW optical waveform synthesizer: Toward gigawatt isolated attosecond pulses

Enhanced XUV harmonics generated in mixed noble gases using three-color laser fields

High repetition coherent extreme ultraviolet (XUV) harmonics offer a powerful tool for investigating electron dynamics and understanding the underlying physics in a wide range of systems. We demonstrate the utilization of combined three-color (ω+2ω+3ω) laser fields in the generation of coherent extreme ultraviolet radiation in mixed noble gases. The three-color field results from the combination of fundamental, second-, and third-order harmonics of the near-infrared laser pulses in the nonlinear crystals. Different noble gases were selected as gas targets based on their ionization potentials, which are important parameters for generating higher cut-offs and intensities for the XUV harmonics. Enhanced XUV harmonic intensities were observed in the mixture of He + Kr gases when using three-color laser fields, compared to harmonics generated in the He + Kr mixture under a single-color pump. On the other hand, suppression of XUV harmonic intensity was observed in the mixture of He + Xe under the three-color pump due to the highest ionization level for these two mixed gases at similar laser conditions. Strong harmonic yields in the range of 25 to 80 eV of photon energy were observed.

Parametric waveform synthesis: a scalable approach to generate sub-cycle optical transients

The availability of electromagnetic pulses with controllable field waveform and extremely short duration, even below a single optical cycle, is imperative to fully harness strong-field processes and to gain insight into ultrafast light-driven mechanisms occurring in the attosecond time-domain. The recently demonstrated parametric waveform synthesis (PWS) introduces an energy-, power- and spectrum-scalable method to generate non-sinusoidal sub-cycle optical waveforms by coherently combining different phase-stable pulses attained via optical parametric amplifiers. Significant technological developments have been made to overcome the stability issues related to PWS and to obtain an effective and reliable waveform control system. Here we present the main ingredients enabling PWS technology. The design choices concerning the optical, mechanical and electronic setups are justified by analytical/numerical modeling and benchmarked by experimental observations. In its present incarnation, PWS technology enables the generation of field-controllable mJ-level few-femtosecond pulses spanning the visible to infrared range.

Stimulated-Raman-scattering amplification of attosecond XUV pulses with pulse-train pumps and application to local in-depth plasma-density measurement

We present a scheme for amplifying an extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) seed isolated attosecond pulse via stimulated Raman scattering of a pulse-train pump. At sufficient seed and pump intensity, the amplification is nonlinear, and the amplitude of the seed pulse can reach that of the pump, one order of magnitude higher than the initial seed amplitude. In the linear amplification regime, we find that the spectral signature of the pump pulse train is imprinted on the spectrum of the amplified seed pulse. Since the spectral signature is imprinted with its frequency downshifted by the plasma frequency, it is possible to deduce the electron density in the region of interaction. This region can be of micrometer length scale longitudinally. By varying the delay between the seed and the pump, this scheme provides a local electron-density measurement inside solid-density plasmas that cannot be probed with optical frequencies, with micrometer resolution.

Intense isolated attosecond pulses from two-color few-cycle laser driven relativistic surface plasma

Ultrafast plasma dynamics play a pivotal role in the relativistic high harmonic generation, a phenomenon that can give rise to intense light fields of attosecond duration. Controlling such plasma dynamics holds key to optimize the relevant sub-cycle processes in the high-intensity regime. Here, we demonstrate that the optimal coherent combination of two intense ultrashort pulses centered at two-colors (fundamental frequency, [Formula: see text] and second harmonic, [Formula: see text]) can lead to an optimal shape in relativistic intensity driver field that yields such an extraordinarily sensitive control. Conducting a series of two-dimensional (2D) relativistic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations carried out for currently achievable laser parameters and realistic experimental conditions, we demonstrate that an appropriate combination of [Formula: see text] along with a precise delay control can lead to more than three times enhancement in the resulting high harmonic flux. Finally, the two-color multi-cycle field synthesized with appropriate delay and polarization can all-optically suppress several attosecond bursts while favourably allowing one burst to occur, leading to the generation of intense isolated attosecond pulses without the need of any sophisticated gating techniques.

Analysis of low-frequency THz emission from monolayer graphene irradiated by a long two-color laser pulse

Terahertz (THz) radiations from graphene are expected to provide a powerful light source for their wide applications. However, their conversion efficiencies are limited with either long-duration or few-cycle single-color laser pulses. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that THz waves can be efficiently generated from monolayer graphene by using a long-duration two-color laser pulse at normal incidence. Our simulated results show that low-frequency THz emissions are sensitive to the phase difference between two colors, the laser intensity, and the fundamental wavelength. Their dependence on these parameters can be very well reproduced by asymmetry parameters accounting for electron populations of conduction and valence bands. On the contrary, a newly defined σ parameter including the Landau-Zener tunneling probability cannot precisely predict such dependence. Furthermore, the waveform of THz electric field driven by two-color laser pulses exhibits the typical feature of a half-cycle pulse.

100-mJ class, sub-two-cycle, carrier-envelope phase-stable dual-chirped optical parametric amplification

Based on dual-chirped optical parametric amplification (DC-OPA) and type-I BiB₃O₆ (BiBO) crystals, the generation of >100 mJ, 10.4 fs, 10 Hz, carrier-envelope phase (CEP)-stable laser pulses, which are centered at 1.7 µm, was demonstrated producing a peak power of 10 TW. CEP-dependent high harmonic generation (HHG) was implemented to confirm the sub-two-cycle pulse duration and CEP stabilization of infrared (IR) laser pulses. As far as we know, the obtained pulse energy and peak power represented the highest values for sub-two-cycle CEP-stable IR optical parametric amplification. Additionally, the prospects of achieving high-energy water window isolated attosecond pulses (IAPs) via our developed laser source were discussed.

Carrier-envelope phase control of synthesized waveforms with two acousto-optic programmable dispersive filters

We demonstrate the scanning and control of the carrier-envelope phases (CEPs) of two adjacent spectral components totally spanning more than one-octave in the short-wave infrared (SWIR) wavelength region by operating two individual acousto-optic programmable dispersive filters (AOPDFs) applied to each of the two spectral components. The total CEP shift of the synthesized sub-cycle pulse composed of the two spectral components is controlled with simultaneous scans of the two CEPs. The resultant error of the controlled CEP was 642 mrad, so that this technique is useful for searching zero CEP of the synthesized pulse with the maximum field amplitude. In addition, we conduct a closed feedback loop to compensate for the CEP fluctuation by using the two AOPDFs together. As a result, we succeed to reduce the rms error of the CEP from 399 mrad to 237 mrad.

Electro-optic characterization of synthesized infrared-visible light fields

The measurement and control of light field oscillations enable the study of ultrafast phenomena on sub-cycle time scales. Electro-optic sampling (EOS) is a powerful field characterization approach, in terms of both sensitivity and dynamic range, but it has not reached beyond infrared frequencies. Here, we show the synthesis of a sub-cycle infrared-visible pulse and subsequent complete electric field characterization using EOS. The sampled bandwidth spans from 700 nm to 2700 nm (428 to 110 THz). Tailored electric-field waveforms are generated with a two-channel field synthesizer in the infrared-visible range, with a full-width at half-maximum duration as short as 3.8 fs at a central wavelength of 1.7 µm (176 THz). EOS detection of the complete bandwidth of these waveforms extends it into the visible spectral range. To demonstrate the power of our approach, we use the sub-cycle transients to inject carriers in a thin quartz sample for nonlinear photoconductive field sampling with sub-femtosecond resolution.

Asymmetric high energy dual optical parametric amplifier for parametric processes and waveform synthesis

We report on an asymmetric high energy dual optical parametric amplifier (OPA) which is capable of having either the idlers, signals, or depleted pumps, relatively phase locked at commensurate or incommensurate wavelengths. Idlers and signals can be locked on the order of 200 mrad rms or better, corresponding to a 212 as jitter at λ=2 µm. The high energy arm of the OPA outputs a combined 3.5 mJ of signal and idler, while the low energy arm outputs 1.5 mJ, with the entire system being pumped with a 1 kHz, 18 mJ Ti:Sapphire laser. Both arms are independently tunable from 1080 nm-2600 nm. The combination of relative phase locking, high output power and peak intensity, and large tunability makes our OPA an ideal tool for use in difference frequency generation (DFG) in the strong pump regime, and for high peak field waveform synthesis in the near-infrared. To demonstrate this ability we generate terahertz radiation through two color waveform synthesis in air plasma and show the influence of the relative phase on the generated terahertz intensity. The ability to phase lock multiple incommensurate wavelengths at high energies opens the door to a multitude of possibilities of strong pump DFG and waveform synthesis.

Post-recombination effects in confined gases photoionized at megahertz repetition rates

Recombination-driven acoustic pulses and heating in a photoionized gas transiently alter its refractive index. Slow thermal dissipation can cause substantial heat accumulation and impair the performance and stability of gas-based laser systems operating at strong-field intensities and megahertz repetition rates. Here we study this effect by probing the pulse-by-pulse buildup of refractive index changes in gases spatially confined inside a capillary. A high-power repetition-rate-tunable femtosecond laser photoionizes the gas at its free-space focus, while a transverse-propagating probe laser interferometrically monitors the resulting time-dependent changes in refractive index. The system allows convenient exploration of the nonlinear regimes used to temporally compress pulses with durations in the ∼30 to ∼300 fs range. We observe thermal gas-density depressions, milliseconds in duration, that saturate to a level that depends on the peak intensity and repetition rate of the pulses, in good agreement with numerical modelling. The dynamics are independently confirmed by measuring the mean speed-of-sound across the capillary core, allowing us to infer that the temperature in the gas can exceed 1000 K. Finally, we explore several strategies for mitigating these effects and improving the stability of gas-based high-power laser systems at high repetition rates.

Generation and measurement of isolated attosecond pulses with enhanced flux using a two colour synthesized laser field

We have generated isolated attosecond pulses and performed attosecond streaking measurements using a two-colour synthesized laser field consisting of a strong near-infrared few-cycle pulse and a weaker multi-cycle pulse centred at 400 nm. An actively stabilized interferometer was used to coherently combine the two pulses. Using attosecond streaking we characterised the electric fields of the two pulses and accurately retrieved the spectrum of the multi-cycle pulse. We demonstrated a two-fold increase in the flux of isolated attosecond pulses produced and show that their duration was minimally affected by the presence of the weaker field due to spectral filtering by a multilayer mirror.

Optimization of a multi-TW few-cycle 1.7-µm source based on Type-I BBO dual-chirped optical parametric amplification

This paper presents the optimization of a dual-chirped optical parametric amplification (DC-OPA) scheme for producing an ultrafast intense infrared (IR) pulse. By employing a total energy of 0.77 J Ti:sapphire pump laser and type-I BBO crystals, an IR pulse energy at the center wavelength of 1.7 µm exceeded 0.1 J using the optimized DC-OPA. By adjusting the injected seed spectrum and prism pair compressor with a gross throughput of over 70%, the 1.7-µm pulse was compressed to 31 fs, which resulted in a peak power of up to 2.3 TW. Based on the demonstration of the BBO type-I DC-OPA, we propose a novel OPA scheme called the "dual pump DC-OPA" for producing a high-energy IR pulse with a two-cycle duration.
