The feasibility and practicality of auxiliary detection of spatial navigation impairment in patients with mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease by using virtual reality

Background

Spatial disorientation in patients with mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease (MCI due to AD) has become a subject of great interest. Medical practitioners are concerned about the serious issue of these patients who are getting lost. Therefore, the early detection of MCI due to AD is crucial.

New methods

We designed virtual reality (VR) protocols to test spatial recognition abilities. Our devices mainly included the Vive Pro Eye and the Steam VR program. We tested the three groups: young cognitively unimpaired (YCU), older cognitively unimpaired (OCU) and MCI due to AD. We also administered the Cognitive Abilities Screening Instrument and the Questionnaire on Everyday Navigational Ability for comparison.

Results

We adopted the testing results of 2 YCU, 3 OCU, and 4 MCI due to AD for analysis. Concerning cognitive abilities, YCU and OCU had better performance than MCI due to AD respectively. It was consistent with the recent memory and the total scores of the Cognitive Abilities Screening Instrument.

Comparison with existing methods

We introduced a real-life setting, the Tzu-Chiang campus at National Cheng Kung University, into the VR environment. It allowed us to assess daily road-recognizing abilities of participants in a controlled testing environment.

Conclusions

Several limitations were considered in this study, such as limited number of participants and low-quality images on the screen. Nonetheless, this device has the potential to serve as a screening tool for MCI due to AD based on its feasibility and practicality.

Tool mastering today - an interdisciplinary perspective

Tools have coined human life, living conditions, and culture. Recognizing the cognitive architecture underlying tool use would allow us to comprehend its evolution, development, and physiological basis. However, the cognitive underpinnings of tool mastering remain little understood in spite of long-time research in neuroscientific, psychological, behavioral and technological fields. Moreover, the recent transition of tool use to the digital domain poses new challenges for explaining the underlying processes. In this interdisciplinary review, we propose three building blocks of tool mastering: (A) perceptual and motor abilities integrate to tool manipulation knowledge, (B) perceptual and cognitive abilities to functional tool knowledge, and (C) motor and cognitive abilities to means-end knowledge about tool use. This framework allows for integrating and structuring research findings and theoretical assumptions regarding the functional architecture of tool mastering via behavior in humans and non-human primates, brain networks, as well as computational and robotic models. An interdisciplinary perspective also helps to identify open questions and to inspire innovative research approaches. The framework can be applied to studies on the transition from classical to modern, non-mechanical tools and from analogue to digital user-tool interactions in virtual reality, which come with increased functional opacity and sensorimotor decoupling between tool user, tool, and target. By working towards an integrative theory on the cognitive architecture of the use of tools and technological assistants, this review aims at stimulating future interdisciplinary research avenues.

Sleeping sites provide new insight into multiple central place foraging strategies of Tibetan macaques (Macaca thibetana)

Food resources, including food types, quantity, and quality, are the key factors that determine the survival and reproduction of wild animals. However, the most basic requirement is access to food. The choice of sleeping sites plays a crucial role in efficiently acquiring food and provides a useful starting point for studying foraging strategies. We collected data on sleeping site and foraging patch uses of wild Tibetan macaques (Macaca thibetana) in Huangshan, Anhui, China, from September 2020 to August 2021. We found that Tibetan macaques used 50 different sleeping sites, mostly located on cliffs, some of which they reused. Sleeping site altitude differed significantly according to season, with higher altitudes recorded in summer and winter. Tibetan macaques did not sleep as much as expected in the peripheral regions of their home range. The sleeping sites were often distributed in proximity to foraging patches, and there was a positive correlation between the use of sleeping sites and surrounding foraging patches. The utilization of foraging patches by Tibetan macaques is inclined towards the multiple central place foraging strategy. Our results provide supportive evidence for the proximity to food resource hypothesis and indicate the important role of sleeping sites in food resource utilization in Tibetan macaques.

Naturalistic neuroscience and virtual reality

Virtual reality (VR) is one of the techniques that became particularly popular in neuroscience over the past few decades. VR experiments feature a closed-loop between sensory stimulation and behavior. Participants interact with the stimuli and not just passively perceive them. Several senses can be stimulated at once, large-scale environments can be simulated as well as social interactions. All of this makes VR experiences more natural than those in traditional lab paradigms. Compared to the situation in field research, a VR simulation is highly controllable and reproducible, as required of a laboratory technique used in the search for neural correlates of perception and behavior. VR is therefore considered a middle ground between ecological validity and experimental control. In this review, I explore the potential of VR in eliciting naturalistic perception and behavior in humans and non-human animals. In this context, I give an overview of recent virtual reality approaches used in neuroscientific research.
