Controlled Dry Adhesion of Bio-Inspired Fibrillar Polymers: Mechanics, Strategies, and Recent Advances

Recent advancements in tunable adhesion technologies have broadened the scope of applications for bio-inspired fibrillar adhesives. This review highlights the latest developments in controlled adhesion mechanisms, with a focus on bio-inspired fibrillar systems. We examine key theoretical foundations and progress in controllable adhesion, including contact mechanics, contact splitting efficiency, fracture mechanics, and the interplay between adhesion and friction. Various factors influencing adhesion strength are discussed alongside optimization approaches and innovative designs that enhance performance. The review also covers recent research on switchable adhesion strategies, with an emphasis on methods for regulating surface contact, stress distribution, and shear force control. Finally, we identify the primary challenges and future directions in the field, outlining areas that require further exploration and technological development. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current advancements and offer insights to guide future research in the evolving field of tunable adhesion technologies.

Beyond 2D: Novel biomaterial approaches for modeling the placenta

This review considers fully three-dimensional biomaterial environments of varying complexity as these pertain to research on the placenta. The developments in placental cell sources are first considered, along with the corresponding maternal cells with which the trophoblast interact. We consider biomaterial sources, including hybrid and composite biomaterials. Properties and characterization of biomaterials are discussed in the context of material design for specific placental applications. The development of increasingly complicated three-dimensional structures includes examples of advanced fabrication methods such as microfluidic device fabrication and 3D bioprinting, as utilized in a placenta context. The review finishes with a discussion of the potential for in vitro, three-dimensional placenta research to address health disparities and sexual dimorphism, especially in light of the exciting recent changes in the regulatory environment for in vitro devices.

Characterizing the Coefficient of Friction Between a Capsule Robot and the Colon

OBJECTIVE

A capsule robot (CR) with an onboard active locomotion mechanism, has been developed as a promising alternative to colonoscopy due to its minimally-invasive advantage. Predicting the traction force and locomotion resistance of the CR, which are both the friction force, is significantly important for the CR development and control. However, a comprehensive study concerning the coefficient of friction (COF) in the colon, which is necessary for prediction, is not available in literature. This paper is dedicated to determining a quantitative COF equation in terms of the contact pressure, hoop strain, and sliding velocity.

METHODS

The COFs of three commonly-used materials of the CR (i.e., PDMS, white and transparent ABS plastic), are measured under 144 different friction cases (6 contact pressures×4 hoop strains×6 sliding velocities). By analyzing the measurements, the influence law of the three factors on the COFs of the three materials is revealed, and based on which, a general COF equation involving eight fitted constants is determined.

RESULTS

The determination coefficients of the COF equation for the three materials are up to 0.9822, 0.9286, and 0.9696, respectively. The COF equation is used to predict the traction force and locomotion resistance of a crawler CR, and the predicting results fit well with the measured ones.

CONCLUSION

The COF equation can provide a correct COF for friction force prediction.

SIGNIFICANCE

It is promising to enable a better force and locomotion control for the CR in the colon.

Collagen fiber-reinforced, tough and adaptive conductive organohydrogel e-skin for multimodal sensing applications

Conductive hydrogels (CHs) with high sensitivity and multifunctional property are considered as excellent materials for wearable devices and flexible electronics. Surface synapses and internal multilayered structures are key factors for highly sensitive pressure sensors. Nevertheless, current CHs lack environmental adaptability, multifunctional perception, and instrument portability, which seriously hinders their application as sensors. Here, waste collagen fibers (buffing dust of leather), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and gelatin (Gel) were used as the basic framework of the hydrogel, loaded with a conductive material (silver nanoparticles (BD-CQDs@AgNPs)) and an anti-freezing moisturizer (glycerol (Gly)), resulting in a multifunctional conductive organohydrogel (BPGC-Gly). As a temperature and humidity sensor, it demonstrated an excellent temperature response range (-20-60 °C) and was capable of rapid response (2.4 s) and recovery (1.6 s) to human breathing. As a strain/pressure sensor, it allowed real-time monitoring of human movement and had a high low-pressure sensitivity (S = 4.26 kPa-1, 0-12.5 kPa). Interestingly, BPGC-Gly could also be used as a portable bioelectrode or the acquisition, monitoring and analysis of EMG/ECG signals. In this work, BPGC-Gly was assembled with wireless transmission to achieve multimodal heath detection, which opens new avenues for multi-responsive CHs, comprehensive human health monitoring and next-generation wearable electronic skin (e-skin).
