A Mach-Zehnder Fabry-Perot hybrid fiber-optic interferometer operating at the thermal noise limit

A new type of interferometric fiber sensor based on a Mach-Zehnder Fabry-Perot hybrid scheme has been experimentally demonstrated. The interferometer combines the benefits of both a double-path configuration and an optical resonator, leading to record-high strain and phase resolutions limited only by the intrinsic thermal noise in optical fibers across a broad frequency range. With a proper scale-up, atto-strain resolutions are believed to be within reach in the ultrasonic frequency range with such interferometers.

Modeling and optimization of an unbalanced delay interferometer based OPLL system

We present and establish a versatile analytical model that allows overall analysis and optimization for the phase noise performance of the delay interferometer based optical phase-locked loop (OPLL). It allows considering any type of lasers with arbitrary frequency noise properties while taking into account the contributions from various practical noise sources, thus enabling comprehensive investigation for the complicated interaction among underlying limiting factors. The quantitative analysis for their evolution along with the change of the delay of the interferometer unveils the resulting impact on the fundamental limit and dynamics of the output phase noise, leading to a well-balanced loop bandwidth and sensitivity thus enabling the overall optimization in terms of closed-loop noise performance. The tendencies observed and the results predicted in terms of coherence metrics in numerical verification with different lasers have testified to the precision and effectiveness of the proposed model, which is quite capable of acting as a design tool for the insightful analysis and overall optimization with guiding significance for practical applications.

High-frequency broadband laser phase noise cancellation using a delay line

Laser phase noise remains a limiting factor in many experimental settings, including metrology, time-keeping, as well as quantum optics. Hitherto this issue was addressed at low frequencies ranging from well below 1 Hz to maximally 100 kHz. However, a wide range of experiments, such as, e.g., those involving nanomechanical membrane resonators, are highly sensitive to noise at higher frequencies in the range of 100 kHz to 10 MHz, such as nanomechanical membrane resonators. Here we employ a fiber-loop delay line interferometer optimized to cancel laser phase noise at frequencies around 1.5 MHz. We achieve noise reduction in 300 kHz-wide bands with a peak reduction of more than 10 dB at desired frequencies, reaching phase noise of less than -160 dB(rad²/Hz) with a Ti:Al₂O₃ laser. These results provide a convenient noise reduction technique to achieve deep ground-state cooling of mechanical motion.

Photonics sensing at the thermodynamic limit

We report a slow-light fiber Bragg grating strain sensor with a resolution limited by the extremely low thermodynamic phase fluctuations of the fiber. This was accomplished by using a short grating (4.5 mm) to enhance the thermal phase noise, an ultra-stable interrogation laser to lower the laser frequency noise, and a slow-light mode with a high group index (∼533) to suppress all other noise sources. We demonstrate that in a similar but longer grating (21 mm), the phase noise is suppressed in inverse proportion to the square root of the length, in accordance with theory, leading to a strain resolution as low as 130  fε/√Hz and a minimum detectable length of ∼3×10^-15  m at 1.5 kHz.
