Iron-sulfur chemistry can explain the ultraviolet absorber in the clouds of Venus

The clouds of Venus are believed to be composed of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and minor constituents including iron-bearing compounds, and their respective concentrations vary with height in the thick Venusian atmosphere. This study experimentally investigates possible iron-bearing mineral phases that are stable under the unique conditions within Venusian clouds. Our results demonstrate that ferric iron can react with sulfuric acid to form two mineral phases: rhomboclase [(H5O2)Fe(SO4)2·3H2O] and acid ferric sulfate [(H3O)Fe(SO4)2]. A combination of these two mineral phases and dissolved Fe3+ in varying concentrations of sulfuric acid are shown to be good candidates for explaining the 200- to 300-nm and 300- to 500-nm features of the reported unknown UV absorber. We, therefore, hypothesize a rich and largely unexplored heterogeneous chemistry in the cloud droplets of Venus that has a large effect on the optical properties of the clouds and the behavior of trace gas species throughout Venus's atmosphere.

Deriving iron contents from past and future Venus surface spectra with new high-temperature laboratory emissivity data

In situ information on the surface composition of Venus is based on measurements of a small number of landing sites. In the laboratory, we measured the emissivity of a range of igneous rocks at temperatures up to 480°C. We show that high-temperature laboratory spectra of basalts are consistent with the only existing multispectral data from the surface of Venus obtained by the photometers on the Venera 9 and 10 landers. We derive the FeO abundances for these landing sites of 12.2 and 9.5 weight %, respectively. From orbit, Venus' surface is only observable on the nightside through small spectral windows near 1 μm where the CO₂ atmosphere is largely transparent. The new laboratory data show that different rock types can be distinguished using only a small set of spectral bands. Therefore, future orbital spectral observations can provide a much-needed global composition map.

Present-day volcanism on Venus as evidenced from weathering rates of olivine

At least some of Venus' lava flows are thought to be <2.5 million years old based on visible to near-infrared (VNIR) emissivity measured by the Venus Express spacecraft. However, the exact ages of these flows are poorly constrained because the rate at which olivine alters at Venus surface conditions, and how that alteration affects VNIR spectra, remains unknown. We obtained VNIR reflectance spectra of natural olivine that was altered and oxidized in the laboratory. We show that olivine becomes coated, within days, with alteration products, primarily hematite (Fe₂O₃). With increasing alteration, the VNIR 1000-nm absorption, characteristic of olivine, also weakens within days. Our results indicate that lava flows lacking VNIR features due to hematite are no more than several years old. Therefore, Venus is volcanically active now.

Recent hotspot volcanism on Venus from VIRTIS emissivity data

The questions of whether Venus is geologically active and how the planet has resurfaced over the past billion years have major implications for interior dynamics and climate change. Nine "hotspots"--areas analogous to Hawaii, with volcanism, broad topographic rises, and large positive gravity anomalies suggesting mantle plumes at depth--have been identified as possibly active. This study used variations in the thermal emissivity of the surface observed by the Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer on the European Space Agency's Venus Express spacecraft to identify compositional differences in lava flows at three hotspots. The anomalies are interpreted as a lack of surface weathering. We estimate the flows to be younger than 2.5 million years and probably much younger, about 250,000 years or less, indicating that Venus is actively resurfacing.

An Overview of Venus Geology

The Magellan spacecraft is producing comprehensive image and altimetry data for the planet Venus. Initial geologic mapping of the planet reveals a surface dominated by volcanic plains and characterized by extensive volcanism and tectonic deformation. Geologic and geomorphologic units include plains terrains, tectonic terrains, and surficial material units. Understanding the origin of these units and the relation between them is an ongoing task of the Magellan team.
