Time-resolved study of crystallization in deeply cooled liquid parahydrogen

We present real-time measurements of the crystallization process occurring in liquid para-hydrogen (para-H(2)) quenched to ≈0.65T(m) (T(m)=13.8   K is the melting point of bulk liquid para-H(2)). The combination of high spatial resolution Raman spectroscopy and liquid microjet generation allows, in situ, capturing structural changes with ∼10(-8)  s time resolution. Our results provide a crystal growth rate that rules out a thermally activated freezing process and reveal that the quenched melt freezes into a metastable polymorph, which undergoes a structural transition. The achieved temporal control offers new opportunities for exploring the elementary processes of nonequilibrium phase transformations in supercooled liquids.

Mechanical Property-Microstructural Relationships in Abalone Shell

The microstructure and mechanical properties of abalone shell were studied. It was found that fracture strength, αf, is 180 MPa, and fracture toughness, KIC, is 7 ± 3 MPa-m1/2; these values are comparable with or better than most “high technology” ceramic materials. The microarchitecture of the nacre section of the red abalone shell is similar to a “brick and mortar” structure, where CaCO3is the brick and organic matter is the mortar, constituting 95% and 5% of the microstructure by volume, respectively. This impressive combination of af and KIcvalues is attributed to the laminated structure of the shell with hard and thick (0.25±0.5 μm) CaCO3and superplastic and thin (20–30 nm) organic components. Although there are several toughening mechanisms operating in the shell, fractographic studies identified sliding of CaCO3layers and bridging by the organic layers to be the most effective ones. These phases also have a strong interface. The results of our experiments are discussed in the context of using abalone shell as a model for the design of synthetic laminates such as cermet (ceramic-metal) and cerpoly (ceramic-polymer) composites.

Diameter- and current-density-dependent growth orientation of hexagonal CdSe nanowire arrays via electrodeposition

Controlling the growth orientation of semiconductor nanowire arrays is of vital importance for their applications in the fields of nanodevices. In the present work, hexagonal CdSe nanowire arrays with various preferential growth orientations have been successfully yielded by employing the electrodeposition technique using porous alumina as templates (PATs). We demonstrate by experimental and theoretical efforts that the growth orientation of the CdSe nanowires can be effectively manipulated by varying either the nanopore diameter of the PATs or the deposited current density, which has significant effects on the optical properties of the CdSe nanowires. The present study provides an alternative approach to tuning the growth direction of electrodeposited nanowires and thus is of importance for the fabrication of nanodevices with controlled functional properties.

Simple procedure for phase identification using convergent beam electron diffraction patterns

The use of the primitive cell volume and the zero order Laue zone (ZOLZ) pattern is proposed as a means to identify phases in a complex microstructure. A single convergent beam pattern, containing a higher order Laue zone ring, from a nanosized region is sufficient to calculate the primitive cell volume of the phase, while ZOLZ pattern is used to determine the zone axis of the crystal. A computer program is used to screen out possible phases on the basis of the value of measured cell volume. The indexing of the ZOLZ pattern follows in the program to find the zone axis of the identified phase. Combination of these two methods ensures accuracy and reliability of phase identification from a single CBED pattern. An example of the analysis is given from the rapidly solidified Al-Al3Ti system.
