Free-electron lasers: present status and future prospects

Low-loss, robust fusion splicing of silica to chalcogenide fiber for integrated mid-infrared laser technology development

We demonstrate a low-loss, repeatable, and robust splice between single-mode silica fiber and single-mode chalcogenide (CHG) fiber. These splices are particularly difficult to create because of the significant difference in the two fibers' glass transition temperatures (∼1000°C) as well as the large difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion between the fibers (∼20×10(-6)/°C). With 90% light coupled through the silica-CHG fiber splice, predominantly in the fundamental circular-symmetric mode, into the core of the CHG fiber and with 0.5 dB of splice loss measured around the wavelength of 2.5 μm, after correcting only for the Fresnel loss, the silica-CHG splice offers excellent beam quality and coupling efficiency. The tensile strength of the splice is greater than 12 kpsi, and the laser damage threshold is greater than 2 W (CW) and was limited by the available laser pump power. We also utilized this splicing technique to demonstrate 2 to 4.5 μm ultrabroadband supercontinuum generation in a monolithic all-fiber system comprising a CHG fiber and a high peak power 2 μm pulsed Raman-shifted thulium fiber laser. This is a major development toward compact form factor commercial applications of soft-glass mid-IR fibers.

Infrared spectroscopic imaging: the next generation

Infrared (IR) spectroscopic imaging seemingly matured as a technology in the mid-2000s, with commercially successful instrumentation and reports in numerous applications. Recent developments, however, have transformed our understanding of the recorded data, provided capability for new instrumentation, and greatly enhanced the ability to extract more useful information in less time. These developments are summarized here in three broad areas--data recording, interpretation of recorded data, and information extraction--and their critical review is employed to project emerging trends. Overall, the convergence of selected components from hardware, theory, algorithms, and applications is one trend. Instead of similar, general-purpose instrumentation, another trend is likely to be diverse and application-targeted designs of instrumentation driven by emerging component technologies. The recent renaissance in both fundamental science and instrumentation will likely spur investigations at the confluence of conventional spectroscopic analyses and optical physics for improved data interpretation. While chemometrics has dominated data processing, a trend will likely lie in the development of signal processing algorithms to optimally extract spectral and spatial information prior to conventional chemometric analyses. Finally, the sum of these recent advances is likely to provide unprecedented capability in measurement and scientific insight, which will present new opportunities for the applied spectroscopist.

FT-IR spectroscopic study on the variations of molecular structures of some carboxyl acids induced by free electron laser

Free electron laser has been developed as tunable lasers over a wide range of wavelengths. Devices irradiating in the region of 6-16 microm (1666-625 cm-1) are operable in the Beijing free electron lasers facilities (BFEL). For understanding the interactions between FEL and biological tissues, in this study wavelength-selective infrared-induced structure changes of substances under irradiation by FEL were measured using FT-IR spectroscopy. The carboxyl acids and carboxylates samples investigated include salicylic acid, sulfosalicylic acid, cholic acid, deoxycholic acid, sodium cholate and sodium deoxycholate. The changes of the FT-IR spectra of the molecules prove that the spectral variations of the samples induced by FEL are closely related to their hydrogen bond networks.

Far-infrared hydrogen lasers in the peculiar star MWC 349A

Far-infrared hydrogen recombination lines H15 alpha (169.4 micrometers), H12 alpha (88.8 micrometers), and H10 alpha (52.5 micrometers) were detected in the peculiar luminous star MWC 349A from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory. Here it is shown that at least H15 alpha is strongly amplified, with the probable amplification factor being greater than or about equal to 10(3) and a brightness temperature that is greater than or about equal to 10(7) kelvin. The other two lines also show signs of amplification, although to a lesser degree. Beyond H10 alpha the amplification apparently vanishes. The newly detected amplified lines fall into the laser wavelength domain. These lasers, as well as the previously detected hydrogen masers, may originate in the photoionized circumstellar disk of MWC 349A and constrain the disk's physics and structure.
