Abstract
This Minireview focuses exclusively on work with scanning tunneling microscopy to study the self-assembled multilayer films (SAMTs) of organic molecules. The π-conjugated organic molecules form different structures within different monolayers on various substrates. The interplay between molecule-substrate and intermolecular interactions plays a key role in determining the stacking mode of organic multilayer films. Different substrates strongly influence the organic-film growth and electronic properties of the organic molecules. Geometric and electronic structures of SAMTs are important factors that may determine device performance. In addition to the inorganic interface, this Minireview addresses the organic-organic interface. Homo- and hetero-SAMTs of organic molecules are also considered. The subtle interplay between structural and electronic characteristics, on one hand, and functionality and reactivity, on the other hand, are highlighted.

Abstract
ABSTRACTWe have performed a constant temperature classical molecular dynamics simulation of the epitaxial growth of a C60 monolayer film deposited on the dimerized Si(100) surface. Our simulation, based on non-central many-body inter-atomic potentials, is capable of predicting the structural stability of the C60 film and the Si substrate and provides a theoretical basis for the results of a recently-performed STM- based experiment for this system.Three-dimensional geometries have been generated on computer and used for the animation of the simulation runs.

Abstract
We have explored the cohesive property of a monolayer of C (60) molecules (ML- C (60)) by means of total energy calculations with the density-functional theory. The total energy curve calculated for ML- C (60), which is obtained as a function of the lattice constant, has two minima and shows a hysteresis in the compression-tension stroke. These two minima in energy correspond to the different structural phases of ML- C (60): one is a monomer phase and the other is a polymer one. The energy band gap within the framework of the local density approximation varies from 1 eV (semiconducting phase) to 0 eV (metallic phase) with external pressure and without structural transition from the monomer phase to the polymer one.
