Space science applications for conducting polymer particles: synthetic mimics for cosmic dust and micrometeorites

The design of conducting polymer-based particles as synthetic mimics for understanding the behaviour of micro-meteorites (a.k.a. cosmic dust) is reviewed and the implications for various space science applications is discussed.

A theoretical study of three gas-phase reactions involving the production or loss of methane cations

Hydrocarbon ions are important species in flames, spectroscopy and the interstellar medium. Their importance is reflected in the extensive body of literature on the structure and reactivity of carbocations. However, the geometry, electronic structure and reactivity of carbocations are difficult to assess. This study aims to contribute to the current knowledge of this subject by presenting a quantum mechanics description of methane cation dissociation using multiconfigurational methods. The geometric and electronic parameters of the minimum structure were determined for three main reaction paths: the dissociation CH4(+)→ CH2(+) + H2 and the dissociation-recombination processes CH4(+)↔ CH3(+) + H. The electronic and energetic effects of these reactions were analyzed, and it was found that each reaction path has a strong dependence on the methodology used as well as a strong multiconfigurational character during dissociation. The first doublet excited states are inner-shell excited states and may correspond to the ions that are expected to be formed after electron detachment. The rate coefficient for each reaction path was determined using variational transition state theory and RRKM/master equation calculations. The major dissociation paths, with their rate coefficients at the high-pressure limit, are CH4(+)(X(~)(2)B1) → CH3(+)(A(2)A1') + H((2)S) (k∞(T) = 1.42 × 10(+14) s(-1) exp(-37.12/RT)) and CH4(+)(X(~)(2)B1) → CH2(+)(A(2)A1) + H2((2)Σg(+)) (k∞(T) = 9.18 × 10(+14) s(-1) exp(-55.77/RT)). Our findings help to explain the abundance of ions formed from CH4 in the interstellar medium and to build models of chemical evolution.

Application of Reflectron Time-of-Flight Mass Spectroscopy in the Analysis of Astrophysically Relevant Ices Exposed to Ionization Radiation: Methane (CH4) and D4-Methane (CD4) as a Case Study

Methane ices have been detected on ice-coated interstellar grains and on the surface of Kuiper belt objects. These ices are chemically altered by ionizing radiation in the form of energetic photons and charged particles, leading to complex organic molecules. Despite decades of research, the chemical makeup of these newly synthesized molecules has not been completely understood to date. Here, we present a novel application of reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry coupled to soft photoionization to probe the molecular formulas of the molecules formed upon interaction of ionizing radiation with simple methane and D4-methane ices. Our study depicts clear evidence of high-molecular-weight hydrocarbons of up to C22, among them alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes/dienes, with those product classes in italics identified for the first time on line and in situ. These studies are particular timely as they provide laboratory data of methane-processed ices, which can be compared to actual data from the New Horizons mission on route to Pluto.

Water Ice in 2060 Chiron and Its Implications for Centaurs and Kuiper Belt Objects

We report the detection of water ice in the Centaur 2060 Chiron, based on near-infrared spectra (1.0-2.5 µm) taken with the 3.8 m United Kingdom Infrared Telescope and the 10 m Keck Telescope. The appearance of this ice is correlated with the recent decline in Chiron's cometary activity: the decrease in the coma cross section allows previously hidden solid-state surface features to be seen. We predict that water ice is ubiquitous among Centaurs and Kuiper Belt objects, but its surface coverage varies from object to object and thus determines its detectability and the occurrence of cometary activity.

Identification of water ice on the Centaur 1997 CU26

Spectra of the Centaur 1997 CU26 were obtained at the Keck Observatory on 27 October 1997 (universal time). The data show strong absorptions at 1.52 and 2.03 micrometers attributable to water ice on the surface of 1997 CU26. The reflectance spectrum of 1997 CU26 is matched by the spectrum of a mixture of low-temperature, particulate water ice and spectrally featureless but otherwise red-colored material. Water ice dominates the spectrum of 1997 CU26, whereas methane or methane-like hydrocarbons apparently dominate the spectrum of the Kuiper belt object 1993 SC, perhaps indicating different origins, thermal histories, or both for these two objects.
