Clinoenstatite in alpe arami peridotite: additional evidence of very high pressure

Single-crystal metastable high-temperature C2/c clinoenstatite quenched rapidly from high temperature and high pressure

The high-temperature clinoenstatite (HT-CEn) is one of the most important MgSiO3 pyroxene polymorphs, but the details of its structure and stability have been uncertain. The single crystal of the C2/c HT-CEn end-member is firstly synthesized by rapid pressure-temperature quenching from 15-16 GPa and 1173-2173 K. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows unusual bonding distances and static disorder of the atoms frozen in this metastable structure. The degree of kinking of the silicate tetrahedral chains is 175° for HT-CEn. The chain angle for HP-CEn is substantially smaller (135°), but the angle for L-CEn is in the opposite direction at -160° (= 200°). The degree of kinking increases by being curved by more than 180° for the transition from HT-CEn to L-CEn. As for the reverse change from the expansion to the stretch, a potential barrier exists at the point of the continuity. It is suggested that the reason why a structure can be quenched under ambient conditions is as follows: the present HT-CEn single crystal has been formed by the isosymmetric phase transition from the high-pressure C2/c clinoenstatite (HP-CEn). The presence of HT-CEn from HP-CEn in natural rocks is an indicator of quenching history, which leads to the possibility that it exists in shocked meteorites and impact materials.

The influence of SWCNT-metallic nanoparticle mixtures on the desorption properties of milled MgH2 powders

We have examined the effect of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)-metallic nanoparticle additions on the hydrogen desorption behavior of MgH(2) after high-energy co-milling. The metallic nanoparticles were the catalysts used for the SWCNT growth. The co-milling consisted of high-energy planetary milling in an inert argon environment of the hydride powder mixed with the SWCNTs. Identically milled pure MgH(2) powders were used as a baseline. The composites were tested using a combined differential scanning calorimeter and thermogravimetric analyzer, while the microstructures were examined using a variety of techniques including x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We found that the SWCNT-nanoparticle additions do have an influence on the desorption kinetics. However, the degree to which they are effective depends on the composite's final state. The optimum microstructure for sorption, obtained after 1 h of co-milling, consists of highly defective SWCNTs in intimate contact with metallic nanoparticles and with the hydride. This microstructure is optimum, presumably because of the dense and uniform coverage of the defective SWCNTs on the MgH(2) surface. Prolonged co-milling of 7 h destroys the SWCNT structure and reduces the enhancement. Even after 72 h of co-milling, when the SWCNTs are completely destroyed, the metallic nanoparticles remain dispersed on the hydride surfaces. This indicates that the metallic nanoparticles alone are not responsible for the enhanced sorption and that there is indeed something catalytically unique about a defective SWCNT-metal combination. Cryo-stage TEM analysis of the hydride powders revealed that they are nanocrystalline and in some cases multiply twinned. To our knowledge this is the first study where the structure of milled alpha- MgH(2) has been directly imaged. Since defects are an integral component of hydride-to-metal phase transformations, such analysis sheds new insight regarding the fundamental microstructural origins of the sorption enhancement due to mechanical milling.

Very high-pressure orogenic garnet peridotites

Mantle-derived garnet peridotites are a minor component in many very high-pressure metamorphic terranes that formed during continental subduction and collision. Some of these mantle rocks contain trace amounts of zircon and micrometer-sized inclusions. The constituent minerals exhibit pre- and postsubduction microstructures, including polymorphic transformation and mineral exsolution. Experimental, mineralogical, petrochemical, and geochronological characterizations using novel techniques with high spatial, temporal, and energy resolutions are resulting in unexpected discoveries of new phases, providing better constraints on deep mantle processes.

The possible subduction of continental material to depths greater than 200 km

Determining the depth to which continental lithosphere can be subducted into the mantle at convergent plate boundaries is of importance for understanding the long-term growth of supercontinents as well as the dynamic processes that shape such margins. Recent discoveries of coesite and diamond in regional ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic rocks has demonstrated that continental material can be subducted to depths of at least 120 km (ref. 1), and subduction to depths of 150-300 km has been inferred from garnet peridotites in orogenic UHP belts based on several indirect observations. But continental subduction to such depths is difficult to trace directly in natural UHP metamorphic crustal rocks by conventional mineralogical and petrological methods because of extensive late-stage recrystallization and the lack of a suitable pressure indicator. It has been predicted from experimental work, however, that solid-state dissolution of pyroxene should occur in garnet at depths greater than 150 km (refs 6-8). Here we report the observation of high concentrations of clinopyroxene, rutile and apatite exsolutions in garnet within eclogites from Yangkou in the Sulu UHP metamorphic belt, China. We interpret these data as resulting from the high-pressure formation of pyroxene solid solutions in subducted continental material. Appropriate conditions for the Na2O concentrations and octahedral silicon observed in these samples are met at depths greater than 200 km.
