Abstract
The high-dimensional basis of orbital angular momentum (OAM) has several added and unique advantages for photonic quantum technologies compared to the polarization basis, which is only two-dimensional. However, one of the major roadblocks in implementing OAM-based applications with their full potentials is the absence of an ideal OAM-mode detector. Despite the plethora of efforts in the last three decades, currently, there is no OAM detector that can detect a broad OAM-mode spectrum, has uniform detection-efficiency over all the modes, measures the true spectrum, and works for an arbitrary quantum state without the need for any previous information. Here, we experimentally demonstrate just such an OAM detector. We report detection of pure and mixed OAM states with fidelities more than 98% and with measurement times of only a few minutes for dimensionalities up to 100. We expect our work to substantially boost the OAM-based photonic quantum technology efforts.

Abstract
Vortex phenomena are ubiquitous in nature. In optics, despite the availability of numerous techniques for vortex generation and detection, topological protection of vortex transport with desired orbital angular momentum (OAM) remains a challenge. Here, by use of topological disclination, we demonstrate a scheme to confine and guide vortices featuring arbitrary high-order charges. Such a scheme relies on twofold topological protection: a non-trivial winding in momentum space due to chiral symmetry, and a non-trivial winding in real space due to the complex coupling of OAM modes across the disclination structure. We unveil a vorticity-coordinated rotational symmetry, which sets up a universal relation between the vortex topological charge and the rotational symmetry order of the system. As an example, we construct photonic disclination lattices with a single core but different C n symmetries and achieve robust transport of an optical vortex with preserved OAM solely corresponding to one selected zero-energy vortex mode at the mid-gap. Furthermore, we show that such topological structures can be used for vortex filtering to extract a chosen OAM mode from mixed excitations. Our results illustrate the fundamental interplay of vorticity, disclination and higher-order topology, which may open a new pathway for the development of OAM-based photonic devices such as vortex guides, fibres and lasers.

Abstract
Light beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) in free space or within optical fibers have a wide range of applications in optics; however, exciting these modes with both high purity and low loss generally requires demanding optimization of excitation conditions in a high dimensional space. Furthermore, mechanical drift can significantly degrade the mode purity over time, which may limit practical deployment of OAM modes in concrete applications. Here, combining an iterative wavefront matching approach and a genetic algorithm, we demonstrate rapid and automated excitation of OAM modes with optimized purity and reduced loss. Our approach allows for systematic computational realignment of the system enabling drift compensation over extended durations. Our experimental results indicate that OAM purity can be optimized and maintained over periods exceeding 24 h, paving the way for the applications of stable OAM beams in optics.

Abstract
We propose a high-speed multimode fiber short-reach optical interconnect system based on a Kramers-Kronig (KK) field reconstruction with the mode division multiplexing (MDM) and polarization division multiplexing (PDM) technology. In this work, the LP01, LP21a, LP21b, and LP02 modes are selected as independent channels to carry information. The demonstration achieved the 800 Gb/s net data rate per wavelength with a bit-rate-distance-product (BDP) of 8 Tb/s·km. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest experimental record of a single wavelength BDP over the SMMF with KK detection. In addition, we discuss the system performance after all multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and partial MIMO processing and give guidance on the trade-off between system performance and computational resource.

Abstract
Current or magnetic field sensing is usually achieved by exploiting the Faraday effect of an optical material combined with an interferometric probe that provides the sensitivity. Being interferometric in nature, such sensors are typically sensitive to several other environmental parameters such as vibrations and mechanical disturbances, which, however, inevitably impose the inaccuracy and instability of the detection. Here we demonstrate a polarimetric fiber optic current sensor based on orbital angular momentum modes of an air-core optical fiber. In the fiber, spin-orbit interactions imply that the circular birefringence, which is sensitive to applied currents or resultant magnetic fields, is naturally resilient to mechanical vibrations. The sensor, which effectively measures polarization rotation at the output of a fiber in a magnetic field, exhibits high linearity in the measured signal versus the applied current that induces the magnetic field, with a sensitivity of 0.00128 rad/A and a noise limit of 1×10-5/H z. The measured polarization varies within only ±0.1% under mechanical vibrations with the frequency of up to 800 Hz, validating the robust environmental performance of the sensor.

Abstract
Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) in chip-scale photonics is paramount to sustain data capacity growth and reduce power consumption. However, its scalability hinges on developing efficient and dynamic modal switches. Existing active modal switches suffer from substantial static power consumption, large footprints, and narrow bandwidth. Here, we present, for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a novel multiport, broadband, non-volatile, and programmable modal switch designed for on-chip MDM systems. Our design leverages the unique properties of integrating nanoscale phase-change materials (PCM) within a silicon photonic architecture. This enables independent manipulation of spatial modes, allowing for dynamic, non-volatile, and selective routing to six distinct output ports. Crucially, our switch outperforms current dynamic modal switches by offering non-volatile, energy-efficient multiport functionality and excels in performance metrics. Our switch exhibits exceptional broadband operating bandwidth exceeding 70 nm, with low loss (< 1 dB), and a high extinction ratio (> 10 dB). Our framework provides a step forward in chip-scale MDM, paving the way for future green and scalable data centers and high-performance computers.

Abstract
The multiplication of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes using optical coordinate transformation is useful for OAM optical networks, but the scalability of this scheme is limited by the ray model. Here, we propose an alternative scheme for the scalable multiplication of OAM modes based on modified multi-plane light conversion (MPLC) that can extend azimuthal and radial indices of OAM modes supported by the multipliers and unlock a new degree of freedom for radial high-order OAM states that has been restricted in the zero order. The multiplication for 20 OAM modes with radial index p = 0 and 10 OAM modes with radial index p = 1 is performed in simulation and experiment. The 3-dB optical bandwidth corresponding to the purity of OAM modes covers the entire C-band experimentally. This novel, to the best of our knowledge, approach to manipulating OAM states provides valuable insights and flexible strategies for high-capacity OAM optical communication and high-dimensional optical quantum information processing.
