Multilegged matter transport: A framework for locomotion on noisy landscapes

Controlled Locomotion of a Minimal Soft Structure by Stick-Slip Nonlinearity

We present a locomotion mechanism that uses the stick-slip transition of a soft passive structure with an internal mechanical resonance. The structure is harmonically driven by a global vertical shaking and, because of its resonance dephasing and the threshold response of stick-slip transition, it can either move forward or backward. We establish a relation for the motion acceleration threshold that we experimentally validate. We identify a nontrivial regime close to the resonance with a velocity inversion for a constant excitation frequency and an increasing driving amplitude. We finally show that we can achieve a controlled multimodal motion by combining multiple internal resonances.

Coordinated behavior of autonomous microscopic machines through local electronic pulse coupling

Increasingly functional microscopic machines are poised to have massive technical influence in areas including targeted drug delivery, precise surgical interventions, and environmental remediation. Such functionalities would increase markedly if collections of these microscopic machines were able to coordinate their function to achieve cooperative emergent behaviors. Implementing such coordination, however, requires a scalable strategy for synchronization-a key stumbling block for achieving collective behaviors of multiple autonomous microscopic units. Here, we show that pulse-coupled complementary metal-oxide semiconductor oscillators offer a tangible solution for such scalable synchronization. Specifically, we designed low-power oscillating modules with attached mechanical elements that exchange electronic pulses to advance their neighbor's phase until the entire system is synchronized with the fastest oscillator or "leader." We showed that this strategy is amenable to different oscillator connection topologies. The cooperative behaviors were robust to disturbances that scrambled the synchronization. In addition, when connections between oscillators were severed, the resulting subgroups synchronized on their own. This advance opens the door to functionalities in microscopic robot swarms that were once considered out of reach, ranging from autonomously induced fluidic transport to drive chemical reactions to cooperative building of physical structures at the microscale.

Influence of the frequency on undulatory swimming speed in granular media

Sand is a highly dissipative system, where the local spatial arrangements and densities depend strongly on the applied forces, resulting in fluid-like or solid-like behaviour. This makes sand swimming challenging and intriguing, raising questions about the nature of the motion and how to optimize the design of artificial swimmers able to swim in sand. Recent experiments suggest that lateral undulatory motion enables efficient locomotion, with a non-monotonic dependence of the swimming speed on the undulatory frequency and the height of the sediment bed. Here, we propose a 2D granular model, where the effect of the sediment height is modeled by an effective frictional force with the substrate. We show that the optimal frequency coincides with the second vibrational mode of the swimmer and explain the underlying mechanism through a characterization of the rheology of the medium. Potential implications in the design of artificial swimmers are discussed.

Cooperative transport in sea star locomotion

It is unclear how animals with radial symmetry control locomotion without a brain. Using a combination of experiments, mathematical modeling, and robotics, we tested the extent to which this control emerges in sea stars (Protoreaster nodosus) from the local control of their hundreds of feet and their mechanical interactions with the body. We discovered that these animals compensate for an experimental increase in their submerged weight by recruiting more feet that synchronize in the power stroke of the locomotor cycle during their bouncing gait. Mathematical modeling of the mechanics of a sea star replicated this response to loading without a central controller. A robotic sea star was found to similarly recruit more actuators under higher loads through purely decentralized control. These results suggest that an array of biological or engineered actuators are capable of cooperative transport where the actuators are dynamically recruited by the mechanics of the body. In particular, the body's vertical oscillations serve to recruit feet in greater numbers to overcome the weight to propel the body forward. This form of distributed control contrasts the conventional view of animal locomotion as governed by the central nervous system and offers inspiration for the design of engineered devices with arrays of actuators.

Leg-body coordination strategies for obstacle avoidance and narrow space navigation of multi-segmented, legged robots

Introduction

Millipedes can avoid obstacle while navigating complex environments with their multi-segmented body. Biological evidence indicates that when the millipede navigates around an obstacle, it first bends the anterior segments of its corresponding anterior segment of its body, and then gradually propagates this body bending mechanism from anterior to posterior segments. Simultaneously, the stride length between pairs of legs inside the bending curve decreases to coordinate the leg motions with the bending mechanism of the body segments. In robotics, coordination between multiple legs and body segments during turning for navigating in complex environments, e.g., narrow spaces, has not been fully realized in multi-segmented, multi-legged robots with more than six legs.

Method

To generate the efficient obstacle avoidance turning behavior in a multi-segmented, multi-legged (millipede-like) robot, this study explored three possible strategies of leg and body coordination during turning: including the local leg and body coordination at the segment level in a manner similar to millipedes, global leg amplitude change in response to different turning directions (like insects), and the phase reversal of legs inside of turning curve during obstacle avoidance (typical engineering approach).

Results

Using sensory inputs obtained from the antennae located at the robot head and recurrent neural control, different turning strategies were generated, with gradual body bending propagation from the anterior to posterior body segments.

Discussion

We discovered differences in the performance of each turning strategy, which could guide the future control development of multi-segmented, legged robots.
