Depinning dynamics of confined colloidal dispersions under oscillatory shear

Strongly confined colloidal dispersions under shear can exhibit a variety of dynamical phenomena, including depinning transitions and complex structural changes. Here, we investigate the behavior of such systems under pure oscillatory shearing with shear rate γ[over ̇](t)=γ[over ̇]_{0}cos(ωt), as it is a common scenario in rheological experiments. The colloids' depinning behavior is assessed from a particle level based on trajectories, obtained from overdamped Brownian dynamics simulations. The numerical approach is complemented by an analytic one based on an effective single-particle model in the limits of weak and strong driving. Investigating a broad spectrum of shear rate amplitudes γ[over ̇]_{0} and frequencies ω, we observe complete pinning as well as temporary depinning behavior. We discover that temporary depinning occurs for shear rate amplitudes above a frequency-dependent critical amplitude γ[over ̇]_{0}^{crit}(ω), for which we attain an approximate functional expression. For a range of frequencies, approaching γ[over ̇]_{0}^{crit}(ω) is accompanied by a strongly increasing settling time. Above γ[over ̇]_{0}^{crit}(ω), we further observe a variety of dynamical structures, whose stability exhibits an intriguing (γ[over ̇]_{0},ω) dependence. This might enable new perspectives for potential control schemes.

Shear Viscosity Overshoots in Polymer Modified Asphalts

Polymer modification is one of the most common methods for improving the performance of asphalt binders. Despite in-depth research, the structural modifications induced by polymers are still not well understood. In this work, steady shear viscosity measurements and cryo-scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM) were used to better understand the internal structure of asphalts modified by styrene-butadiene-styrene with and without sulfur as a crosslinking agent, asphalts modified by polyphosphoric acid (PPA), and quaternary asphalt blends modified by SBS, sulfur, and PPA. The results showed that polymer and asphaltenes collaborate, thus SBS forms a three-dimensional network strengthened by asphaltenes clusters. The strength, extension, and physical nature of such a network is revealed by the appearance of overshoots in the viscosity curves. Moreover, the indirect information deduced from the magnitude and shape of the shear viscosity curves successfully correlated with direct observations of the internal structure by cryo-SEM. Steady shear viscosity is thus recommended as a useful tool in studying the structural development of asphalts modified by different technologies.

The Role of Structure in Polymer Rheology: Review

The review is devoted to the analysis of the current state of understanding relationships among the deformation-induced structure transformations, observed rheological properties, and the occurrence of non-linear effects for polymer liquids (melts, solutions, and composites). Three levels of non-linearity are the base for consideration. The first one concerns changes in the relaxation spectra of viscoelastic liquids, which are responsible for weak non-linear phenomena. The second one refers to the strong non-linearity corresponding to such changes in the structure of a medium that leads to the emergence of a new relaxation state of a matter. Finally, the third one describes the deformation-induced changes in the phase state and/or the occurring of bifurcations and instability in flow and reflects the thermodynamic non-linear behavior. From a structure point of view, a common cause of the non-linear effects is the orientation of macromolecules and changes in intermolecular interaction, while a dominant factor in describing fluid dynamics of polymer liquids is their elasticity. The modern understanding of thixotropic effects, yielding viscoplastic materials, deformation-induced phase transition, and the experimental observations, demonstrating direct correlations between the structure and rheology of polymer liquids, are the main objects for discussion. All these topics are reviewed and discussed mainly on the basis of the latest five-year publications.

Rheology of Highly Concentrated Suspensions with a Bimodal Size Distribution of Solid Particles for Powder Injection Molding

Powder injection molding (PIM) is one of the modern and prospective technologies in processing different materials. We proposed to use bimodal compositions of particles for increasing their content in the final products. A set of model suspension of Al with low-molecular-weight poly (ethylene glycol) as a binder based on theoretical arguments concerning the filling capacity of bimodal suspensions was prepared. Studying the rheological properties of these compositions showed that they demonstrate elasto-viscous behavior with significant plasticity that is favorable for the technological process. Using compositions with bimodal distributions allows for increasing the content of the solid phase up to 75 vol. % for PIM technology, which is significantly higher than the standard practical limit. This rheological approach developed for model formulations was applied to processing compositions containing aluminum oxide as typical ceramics and polyolefines as a binder widely used in technological practice. The obtained sintered ceramic samples have quite acceptable mechanical properties of the usual corundum articles.

Deformation Properties of Concentrated Metal-in-Polymer Suspensions under Superimposed Compression and Shear

Concentrated metal-in-polymer suspensions (55 vol.% and 60 vol.%) of aluminum powder dispersed in low molecular weight polyethylene glycol) demonstrate elastoplastic properties under compression and shear. The rheological behavior of concentrated suspensions was studied in a rotational rheometer with uniaxial compression (squeezing), as well as shearing superimposed on compression. At a high metal concentration, the elasticity of the material strongly increases under strain, compared with the plasticity. The elastic compression modulus increases with the growth of normal stress. Changes in the shear modulus depend on both normal and shear stresses. At a low compression force, the shear modulus is only slightly dependent on the shear stress. However, high compression stress leads to a decrease in the shear modulus by several orders with the growth of the shear stress. The decrease in the modulus seems to be rather unusual for compacted matter. This phenomenon could be explained by the rearrangement of the specific organization of the suspension under compression, leading to the creation of inhomogeneous structures and their displacement at flow, accompanied by wall slip. The obtained set of rheological characteristics of highly loaded metal-in-polymer suspensions is the basis for understanding the behavior of such systems in the powder injection molding process.

A hybrid molecular dynamics study on the non-Newtonian rheological behaviors of shear thickening fluid

To investigate the microstructural evolution dependency on the apparent viscosity in shear-thickening fluids (STFs), a hybrid mesoscale model combined with stochastic rotation dynamics (SRD) and molecular dynamics (MD) is used. Muller-Plathe reverse perturbation method is adopted to analyze the viscosities of STFs in a two-dimensional model. The characteristic of microstructural evolution of the colloidal suspensions under different shear rate is studied. The effect of diameter of colloidal particles and the phase volume fraction on the shear thickening behavior is investigated. Under low shear rate, the two-atom structure is formed, because of the strong particle attractions in adjacent layers. At higher shear rate, the synergetic pair structure extends to layered structure along flow direction because of the increasing hydrodynamics action. As the shear rate rises continuously, the layered structure rotates and collides with other particles, then turned to be individual particles under extension or curve string structure under compression. Finally, at the highest shear rate, the strings curve more severely and get into two-dimensional cluster. The apparent viscosity of the system changes from shear-thinning behavior to the shear-thickening behavior. This work presents valuable information for further understanding the shear thickening mechanism.
