The role of pharmacists in training doctors about infections and antimicrobial prescribing

This paper highlights the role of clinical pharmacists in training doctors about infections and optimal antibiotic prescribing. Although these principles can be equally applied to both primary and secondary care, this paper will focus on such activity in secondary care alone. Most NHS trusts in the United Kingdom now have a specialist antimicrobial pharmacist taking the lead, but all pharmacists can take effective measures to educate prescribers and nurses about the prudent use of antimicrobials and improve the management of infections. Such quality efforts need to be maintained to ensure a sustained approach in the ever-changing field of infection.
