Synergistic effect of interaction between perceived health and social activity on depressive symptoms in the middle-aged and elderly: a population-based longitudinal study

Social activities and long-term depressive-symptoms trajectories among middle-aged and older adults in China: a population-based cohort study

Background

The association between social activities and depressive symptoms remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the relationship between social activities at baseline and the long-term depressive-symptoms trajectories among a cohort of middle-aged and older adults in China.

Methods

This study included 13,258 participants aged 45 years and older from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Depressive symptoms across four waves from 2011 to 2018 were evaluated using the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10). Four types of social activities were assessed at baseline by self-report: (1) interacting with friends; (2) playing Mahjong, chess, and cards or attending a community club; (3) providing help to family, friends, or neighbors; and (4) attending a sporting or social event or club. Group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) was used to map depressive-symptoms trajectories during the follow-up period.

Results

Not interacting with friends at baseline was associated with an increased risk of increasing (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.21, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03, 1.41) and severe-stable (aOR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.10, 1.65) depressive-symptoms trajectories. Participants who did not play Mahjong, cards, or chess and did not attend a sporting or social event or club at baseline were more likely to have mild-stable, decreasing, increasing, and severe-stable depressive-symptoms trajectories.

Conclusion

Social activities play an important role in long-term depressive-symptoms trajectories in middle-aged and older Chinese adults. Interacting with friends, attending sports, or social clubs may prevent depressive symptoms.

Participating in Different Activities and Their Association with Mental Health Problems in the Working Disabled Population in Korea

Background: There are a large number of people suffering from disabilities and this number is rapidly rising. People with disabilities experience various hardships and are more vulnerable to mental health problems. Participating in different types of activities (e.g., leisure, social, etc.) has been shown to ameliorate people’s mental health problems such as stress and depression. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of leisure and social activities on the mental well-being of the working disabled population in Korea. Methods: A total of 1521 disabled people aged between 15 and 64 were included in the study. The degree of participation in leisure (i.e., weekends or weekdays) and social activities, as well as stress and depressive symptoms, were measured using single-item questions. The association between participation in different activities (i.e., leisure and social) and mental health (i.e., stress and depression) was analyzed using a generalized estimating equation (GEE) model. Results: In the fully adjusted model, participation in leisure activities was associated with the level of stress, and less leisure participation was significantly associated with higher odds of stress. For example, in the “2 or fewer hours” group (odds ratio [OR] = 1.461, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.193–1.789) with the “5 h or more” group used as the reference for weekdays and the “5–9 h” group (OR = 1.223, 95% CI = 1.007–1.486) with the “10 h or more” group used as the reference for weekends. In terms of participation in social activities, increased participation was associated with lower levels of depression. For example, in the “Very much” group (OR = 0.314, 95% CI = 0.156–0.633) compared to the “Not at all” group. Conclusions: Participation in different activities was associated with better mental health outcomes in the working disabled population in Korea.

Identifying the Factors That Affect Depressive Symptoms in Middle-Aged Menopausal Women: A Nationwide Study in Korea

Depressive symptoms do not persistently negatively affect functioning throughout the life span, but they may affect quality of life (QOL), especially in middle-aged women. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the factors associated with depressive symptoms in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. This descriptive study was a secondary analysis of the data from the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey that was conducted in 2016. Of the 8150 participants, the analysis included 644 premenopausal women and 459 postmenopausal women aged 40-60 years. The factors associated with depressive symptoms in the participants were examined using multivariate regression analysis. It was found that the depressive symptoms of postmenopausal middle-aged women were greater than those of premenopausal women. While a high perceived stress status and high pain-related discomfort were factors that influenced depressive symptoms among the premenopausal group, a high level of discomfort due to anxiety/depression, a poor perceived health status, shortened weekend sleep time, and smoking were associated with depressive symptoms in the postmenopausal group. Thus, it is necessary to develop an intervention to decrease depressive symptoms in postmenopausal women that considers their QOL, which is associated with depression, their subjective health status, sleep time, and smoking cessation.

Demographics and Health Profiles of Depressive Symptoms in Korean Older Adults

This study examined the demographics and health characteristics of depressive symptoms of Korean older adults. Data were from the 2014 survey of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA). Hierarchical logistic regression was conducted to identify risk factors of depressive symptoms. Model 2 including socio-demographics and health characteristics explained 19.2% of depressive symptoms. Significant risk factors of depressive symptoms were men, age of 53-60 years, mid-sized city and rural area residents, less than high-school education, adults without spouse, 1st (lowest) quintile of annual household income, body shape as underweight, ex-smokers, non-drinkers, no regular exercise, perceived health status as poor, limited activities of daily living, and the number of comorbidities. Interventions to reduce depressive symptoms in these populations should include strategies to change some of these modifiable risk factors.
