Association between factors related to family planning/sexual and reproductive health and contraceptive use as well as consistent condom use among internal migrant population of reproductive ages in three cities in China, based on Heckprobit selection models

Factors Associated with the Choice of Contraceptive Method following an Induced Abortion after Receiving PFPS Counseling among Women Aged 20-49 Years in Hunan Province, China

BACKGROUND

There is limited research on postabortion family planning (PAFP) services and subsequent contraception in China. The current study aimed to identify women's contraceptive methods choices and associated factors after receiving PAFP services.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study used a cluster, stratified and multistage random sample to collect data. All eligible data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0. The chi-square test was used to assess the association between categorical variables. Significant variables (p < 0.05) and all potential variables were then included in the binary logistic regression model for analysis.

RESULTS

Approximately 84.7% (1043/1231) of participants had received pre-abortion PAFP counselling, and approximately 90% of them chose reliable methods. Farmers or workers (OR = 0.297, 95% CI: 0.130-0.683), family monthly income (3000-4999 RMB, OR = 0.454, 95% CI: 0.212-0.973; ≥5000 RMB, OR = 0.455, 95% CI: 0.228-0.909), reliable advice from services providers before abortion (OR = 0.098, 95% CI: 0.039-0.250), painless surgical abortion (OR = 3.465, 95% CI 1.177-10.201), and postabortion follow-up (OR = 0.543, 95% CI: 0.323-0.914) and were associated with contraception choice after receiving PAFP services.

CONCLUSIONS

This study emphasizes the importance of pre-abortion PAFP counselling, postabortion follow-up, and increased focus on women who have experienced painless abortion. The study provides direction for PAFP services policymakers, as well as a reference for contraceptive counselling research around the world.

OBJECTIVE

Effective use of family planning (FP) services significantly improves sexual and reproductive health of both women and men. Recently, the Chinese government has launched the two-child policy allowing families to have an additional child. This study aimed to explore the population's interest for FP services, unmet needs, and expectations.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study using stratified random sampling was conducted in 102 counties of Hubei province and 17 555 randomized individuals from rural, transitional, and urban areas were interviewed through a guided semi-structured questionnaire.

RESULTS

The Han ethnicity dominated our population and number of living children per family ranged from zero to six. Although 81% reported FP services and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) as a shared responsibility, the contraceptives used excluding condoms, were mainly intrauterine devices (76%), tubal ligation (16%), and vasectomy (8%). Although 24% of participants had a history of contraceptive failure, effective contraceptive use after failure among men remained lower (6% for tubal ligation and vasectomy) and 74% of naive contraceptive users strongly rejected vasectomy. Demographic factors, awareness of FP services/SRH, discussing and making joint decisions, and gender discrepancies were strongly associated with unmet FP services/SRH needs (P < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Family planning services use roughly varied with the population's unmet needs and expectations, which should be considered to sustain the strategies.

Adolescents' Communication on Sexual and Reproductive Health Matters with Their Parents and Associated Factors among Secondary and Preparatory School Students in Ambo Town, Oromia, Ethiopia

Background

Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) communication is most likely to promote healthy sexual practices and to reduce risky sexual behavior among adolescents. Communication is the principal means for parents to transmit sexual values and knowledge to their children. Although there are few studies conducted on parent-adolescent communication, there is no study conducted in the town of Ambo. This study was aimed at assessing the level of parent-adolescent communication on SRH issues and its associated factors among school students in Ambo town, Oromia, Ethiopia.

Method

An institution-based concurrent mixed-method cross-sectional study was conducted among 591 secondary and preparatory school students in Ambo town from February 24^th to March 9^th, 2019. A systematic sampling technique was used to select the study subject. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires, and FGD was conducted with parents of students. Data was entered using EpiData version 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 23.0 for statistical analysis. Binary and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to ascertain the association using a 95% confidence interval (CI) and p value (<0.05).

Results

The proportion of students who had communication on sexual and reproductive health issues with their parents was 222 (37.6%). Being female (AOR = 2.07, 95% CI: 1.40-3.07), private school (AOR = 2.77, 95% CI: 1.17-3.69), a father with secondary education (AOR = 2.93, 95% CI: 1.05-8.12) and diploma and above (AOR = 3.27, 95% CI: 1.23-8.71), considering sex education necessary (AOR = 2.83, 95% CI: 1.22-6.57), got information about SRH issues from school (AOR = 2.01, 95% CI: 1.06-2.36) and media (AOR = 2.92, 95% CI: 1.49-3.71), and mother's openness to communicate about SRH issues (AOR = 3.30, 95% CI: 1.31-4.05) were found to be significantly associated with parent-adolescent communication on SRH issues.

Conclusions

The study showed that parent-adolescent communication on SRH issues is low. Being female, those from a private school, father's education, perceived importance of sex education, source of information about SRH issues (school and media), and mother's openness to communicate about SRH issues were identified to be factors associated with the communication. Therefore, the concerned body should consider the identified factors to improve the current level of parent-adolescent communication and adolescent reproductive health.
