The utility of health belief model to explain self-protective behaviour against pneumoconiosis in Chinese underground coal miners: a cross-sectional study

Exploring the determinants of health-promoting behaviors among miners: A text mining and meta-analysis

The health-promoting behaviors of miners are of great significance to their physical and mental well-being. With a focus on enhancing their overall health, this study aimed to explore the determinants and influencing mechanisms of health-promoting behaviors in miners. Initially, the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) model was utilized to extract topical keywords from literature over the last 23 years and to categorize the determinants based on integrating the health promotion model and the health belief model. Subsequently, a meta-analysis was performed based on 51 related empirical research to explore the mechanisms between determinants and health-promoting behaviors. The results indicated that (1) the factors influencing miners' health-promoting behaviors can be divided into four dimensions: physical environment, psychosocial environment, individual characteristics, and health beliefs. (2) Noise was negatively related to health-promoting behaviors, while protective equipment, health culture, interpersonal relationships, health literacy, health attitudes, and income were positively related to health-promoting behaviors. (3) Protective equipment and health literacy were positively related to perceived threat, whereas interpersonal relationships were positively related to perceived benefits. This study sheds light on the mechanisms influencing miners' health-promoting behaviors and could inform behavioral interventions in occupational health.

The use of Health Belief Model (HBM) to explain factors underlying people to take the COVID-19 vaccine in Indonesia

BACKGROUND

SARS-COV-2 (COVID-19) has severely impacted people's health worldwide. Vaccines are one of the health measures taken to reduce the impact of COVID-19, but recent reports have revealed that some people are reluctant to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Understanding the factors underlying an individual's decision to take the COVID-19 vaccine is critical to designing an immunisation programme. This study examines factors that influence the intention to take a COVID-19 vaccine using the modified Health Belief Model (HBM) framework and analysing demographic factors.

METHOD

A cross-sectional online survey was conducted from 10 January to 20 January 2021. Five hundred thirty-seven respondents above 17 years old and residing in Indonesia voluntarily completed an online survey. Survey questions addressed sociodemographic factors; perception of susceptibility, severity, benefits and barriers; cues to action; and intention to take the COVID-19 vaccine. A Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) approach with SmartPLS software was used to analyse the measurements and model construct.

FINDINGS

The results showed that the perception of susceptibility, severity, benefits and barriers, as well as cues to action, predicted people's intention to take a COVID-19 vaccine. Model structure explained a large proportion of variance in people's intention to be vaccinated against COVID-19 (R2 = 66.8 %). Some demographic factors affected the key variables of the HBM. People with low and middle income negatively influence feeling severity, beneficial and barrier in intending to take vaccine. Other demographic factors such as sex, age, marriage and living areas did not affect the components of the HBM, except for females influencing severity and people living in urban areas associated with benefits variable. These findings imply that COVID-19 vaccination programmes should focus on providing accurate information about the severity of COVID-19 and the benefits of taking the vaccine. Building people's confidence in their ability to eliminate barriers to taking the vaccine and involving family members and community and religious leaders will increase COVID-19 vaccine uptake.

CONCLUSION

Despite limitations to the study, such as respondent demographics that are unrepresentative of the wider Indonesian population, inadequate survey timing and an exclusive focus on vaccine intention as the outcome variable, the present study contributes to explaining individuals' intentions to take a COVID-19 vaccine in a Eastern country context. This study is valuable to providing public health policy recommendations that focus on effectively designing immunisation programme interventions.

The evaluation of the smoking cessation behaviors of coal miners according to the health belief model: A cross-sectional study

The aim of this descriptive and cross-sectional study was to evaluate smoking characteristics and smoking cessation behaviors among smoking coal miners according to the Health Belief Model (HBM). The population of this cross sectional study consisted of 582 coal miners, while the sample consisted of 473 miners who agreed to participate in the study. The miners working above ground obtained significantly higher scores compared to those who worked underground (p = 0.027). There was a significant positive correlation between smoking costs and perceived susceptibility (p < 0.001; r = 0.249) sub dimension scores, while smoking costs also had a weak positive correlation with perceived severity (p < 0.050; r = 0.179). In addition, many sub dimensions of the HBM-SCS were found to be correlated (p < 0.001). This finding shows that workers who have smoking costs may have made smoking cessation a strategic goal. Smoking habits are widespread among coal miners, and it was thought that further efforts should be made to explain to those coal miners the health hazards of smoking.

Network-Exposure Severity and Self-Protective Behaviors: The Case of COVID-19

Background and Objectives

To clarify whether awareness of the extent and severity of exposure to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the social networks of older adults is related to the engagement by the latter in self-protective behaviors. The inquiry is guided by the Health Belief Model and by concepts from the domain of social networks.

Research Design and Methods

Data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) were used, including the SHARE COVID-19 Survey executed in the summer of 2020. The study sample numbered 33,053 persons aged 50 and older in 26 countries. We regressed a logged count of self-protective behaviors on network-exposure severity, controlling for sociodemographic background, country, personality traits, and self-exposure severity. Age and network-exposure interaction terms were examined, as were "close family" and "other" network ties.

Results

Network-exposure severity was positively associated with the extent of engagement in self-protective behaviors among older adults, but mainly among the oldest group, aged 70 and older. Awareness of exposure severity in "close family" and "other" networks were similarly associated with self-protection. Respondents from countries with the lowest rates of COVID-19 infection at the time (Latvia, Finland, and Denmark) engaged in fewer self-protective behaviors, while those from countries with high infection rates (Spain, Italy, and Portugal) self-protected to a greater degree.

Discussion and Implications

The study findings point to the role of the social network, even if indirect, in promoting self-protective behaviors among the oldest segment of society. Policymakers should collaborate with the social networks of older adults in order to promote the adoption of self-protective behaviors. Such intervention might help to reduce the threat of infection among the most vulnerable age group.
