An update on imaging of tarsal tunnel syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) is an entrapment neuropathy of the tibial nerve (TN) within the tarsal tunnel (TT) at the level of the tibio-talar and/or talo-calcaneal joints. Making a diagnosis of TTS can be challenging, especially when symptoms overlap with other conditions and electrophysiological studies lack specificity. Imaging, in particular MRI, can help identify causative factors in individuals with suspected TTS and help aid surgical management. In this article, we review the anatomy of the TT, the diagnosis of TTS, aetiological factors implicated in TTS and imaging findings, with an emphasis on MRI.

Posterior Tibial Nerve Lymphoma Presenting as Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome: A Case Report

We report a case of isolated posterior tibial B-cell lymphoma of the posterior tibial nerve presenting as tarsal tunnel syndrome. This diagnosis was considered because of the clinical presentation and electrophysiologic abnormalities. It was further confirmed by the magnetic resonance imaging findings of the ankle and tissue pathologic findings. Whole body positron emission tomography confirmed this to be a localized lymphoma involving the peripheral nerve. The patient underwent chemotherapy with complete tumor resolution. She had had no relapse after 8 months of follow-up. Isolated peripheral nerve lymphomas are very rare, and involvement of the posterior tibial nerve has not been previously reported. Furthermore, the present case report highlights the importance of the clinical examination in the diagnosis of tarsal tunnel syndrome before performing surgical decompression.

Tibial osteochondroma causing foot pain mimicking tarsal tunnel syndrome: a case report

Nerve entrapment syndromes of the lower extremity are relatively rare in patients with multiple hereditary osteochondromatosis. A case of tarsal tunnel like symptoms in a 52-year-old woman with a distal tibial osteochondroma is presented. This case emphasizes that the possibility of nerve compression needs to be considered in a patient with multiple hereditary osteochondromatosis and that tibial osteochondromas can be a cause of tarsal tunnel-like symptoms.

Malignant triton tumor of the head and neck: A case report and review of the literature

BACKGROUND

Malignant triton tumor (MTT) is a relatively rare, aggressive tumor comprised of both malignant schwannoma cells and malignant rhabdomyoblasts. Because MTT frequently arises in the head and neck, the otolaryngologist must be aware of the nature of the tumor and its response to various treatment modalities.

METHOD

This article reviews the treatment and outcome of all reported cases of MTT arising in the head and neck.

CONCLUSIONS

Although statistical analysis is limited by the short duration of follow-up of many patients, complete tumor resection appears to carry an improved chance of survival. Adjuvant radiation and chemotherapy may also improve survival, although a benefit of these therapies was not well demonstrated in this small series.

An unusual cause of tarsal tunnel syndrome

An unusual cause of tarsal tunnel syndrome is discussed, along with many of the other etiologies of this painful condition. The diagnosis was difficult because the patient's symptoms only occurred during activity. Because of burning paresthesias, it was felt that reflex sympathetic dystrophy was the etiology. Only through persistence of the treating podiatrists and the patient's agreeing to an exploration was this entity discovered.
