Nature, content and shifts over time of the most impactful unruptured intracranial aneurysms articles: a bibliometric analysis

Knowledge, attitude, practice and illness perception toward subarachnoid hemorrhage prevention and management among intracranial aneurysm patients

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to explore the knowledge, attitude, practice and illness perception toward prevention and management of subarachnoid hemorrhages (SAH) among intracranial aneurysm (IA) patients.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted between March 2023 and June 2023; demographic characteristics and KAP scores were collected by a self-administered questionnaire and analyzed by linear regression and path analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 455 patients with IA were included, of them 26.37% experienced SAH before. Mean knowledge, attitude and practice scores were 16.60 ± 5.86, 16.39 ± 1.84, and 35.07 ± 3.51, respectively. The linear regression showed ethnic minority, married, education, family members in healthcare system, monthly per capita household income, experience ruptured intracranial aneurysms, smoking, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and aortic lesion were associated with knowledge scores. Age, ethnic minority, urban residence, education, family members in healthcare system, monthly per capita household income, duration of IA ≥6 months, experience ruptured intracranial aneurysms, smoking, diabetes, and aortic lesion were associated with attitude scores. Age, urban residence, monthly per capita household income, duration of IA ≥6 months, experience of ruptured intracranial aneurysms, smoking, diabetes, and aortic lesion were associated with practice scores. According to the path analysis, knowledge directly affected illness perception (β=0.156, P<0.001) and attitude (β=0.708, P<0.001), while attitude (β=0.909, P<0.001) and illness perception (β=0.039, P=0.027) affected practice.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients had positive attitudes towards SAH prevention and management, but a substantial knowledge gap was found along with notably delayed medical help-seeking behavior.

Global trend in research of intracranial aneurysm management with artificial intelligence technology: a bibliometric analysis

Background

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has been growing in the management of intracranial aneurysms (IAs). This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of researches on intracranial aneurysm management with artificial intelligence technology (IAMWAIT) to gain insights into global research trends and potential future directions.

Methods

A comprehensive search of articles and reviews related to IAMWAIT, published from January 1, 1900 to July 20, 2023, was conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection (WoWCC).Visualizations of the bibliometric analysis were generated utilizing WPS Office, Scimago Graphica, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and R.

Results

A total of 277 papers were included in the study. China emerged as the most prolific country in terms of publications, institutions, cooperating countries, and prolific authors. The United States garnered the highest number of total citations, institutions with the highest citations/H index, cooperating countries (n=9), and 3 of the top 10 cited papers. Both the total number of papers and the citation count exhibited a positive and significant correlation with the gross domestic product (GDP) of countries. The journal with the highest publication frequency was Frontiers in Neurology, while Stroke recorded the highest number of citations, H-index, and impact factor (IF). Areas of primary interest in IAMWAIT, leveraging AI technology, included rupture risk assessment/prediction, computer-assisted diagnosis, outcome prediction, hemodynamics, and laboratory research of IAs.

Conclusions

IAMWAIT is an active area of research that has undergone rapid development in recent years. Future endeavors should focus on broader application of AI algorithms in various sub-fields of IAMWAIT to better suit the real world.

The composition of landmark vein of Galen malformation research: the emergence of endovascular treatments

BACKGROUND

Since the advent of endovascular treatment, the long-term prognosis of vein of Galen malformation (VOGM) has markedly improved; however, the nature of research leading to this point is unclear. The objective of this study was to define the composition of VOGM research to date, by means of a bibliometric analysis of the 100 most cited VOGM articles.

METHODS

An electronic search of Elsevier's Scopus database was performed to identify the 100 most cited articles on VOGM screened against predetermined criteria. Data were then compared.

RESULTS

The 100 most cited VOGM articles were published between 1974 and 2017 in 38 unique journals and originated from 16 unique countries. Mean citation count and rate were 59.4 citations and 2.9 citations/year, respectively. The USA (n = 42); Hôpital de Bicêtre, France (n = 15); and Dr. Pierre Lasjaunias (n = 16) were the largest individual country, institutional, and author contributors. Compared to the older articles (published < 2000), key differences for newer articles were statistically higher citation rates (P < 0.01), more authors (P < 0.01), higher proportion of endovascular treatment descriptions (P = 0.01), and more originating from Asia Pacific (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

From the 100 most cited VOGM articles to date, there has been a noticeable shift from diagnosing VOGM based on the foundational work by Dr. Lasjaunias to understanding how we can model clinical outcomes now that endovascular treatment has become the standard of care. Significant shifts in prognosis are pending, and the current bibliometric data implicate we are on the precipice of more recent works making an impact in the near future.

The evolution of intracranial aneurysm research from 2012 to 2021: Global productivity and publication trends

Background

This study aimed to analyze the global research trends and map the knowledge network of intracranial aneurysm (IA) research in the last 10 years.

Methods

Publications related to IA from 2012 to 2021 were retrieved from the Web of Science core collection. Microsoft Excel 2010 and VOSviewer were used to characterize the largest contributors, including authors, journals, institutions, and countries. CiteSpace and VOSviewer were adopted to analyze the trends and knowledge network of IA.

Results

A total of 5,406 publications related to IA from 2012 to 2021 were identified, increasing from 344 in 2012 to 762 in 2021. Siddiqui, AH from the USA contributed the most publications. Papers published in the journal World Neurosurgery ranked first in quantity, while Stroke ranked first for total citations and citations per publication. The top three prolific institutions were Capital Medical University, Mayo Clinic, and the University Department of Neurology Utrecht from 2012 to 2021. Moreover, the USA held the greatest share in the field, and China was almost on par with the USA due to its rapid growth. Specifically, the most frequently covered topics over the recent decade were subarachnoid hemorrhage, endovascular treatment (EVT), clipping, vascular disorders, flow diverter, stent, delayed cerebral ischemia, inflammation, and hemodynamics.

Conclusion

The contribution made by different countries, institutions, journals, and authors for IA research over the past decade was demonstrated in the paper. The main topics include the choice of EVT or surgical clipping, particularly the application of flow diverter and associated complications, while themes such as the etiopathogenetic features of IA (e.g., inflammation and hemodynamics) deserve more attention.

Hundred most cited articles in perioperative neurocognitive disorder: a bibliometric analysis

Background

In line with aging populations and increased application of anesthesia and surgery, perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) has received growing attention worldwide. Considerable researches into PND are being conducted; however, the quantity and quality of such researches have not been reported. Through a retrospective bibliometric analysis, this study aims to identify and characterize the top 100 cited publications on PND.

Methods

We searched the Web of Science database to find the top 100 cited articles focusing on PND. We collected bibliographic information, including year of publication, country of origin, article type, published journal, citation count, and authorship. To determine changes with time, we compared older and newest articles.

Results

The top 100 cited articles were published between 1955 and 2016; the number of citations ranged from 111 to 1248. The United States had the most published papers; clinical trial was the most common article type. The specialty journals of Anesthesiology and Anesthesia & Analgesia were the two most cited journals. Newest articles had a comparable number of citations to older articles, but the former had higher annual citation rates, greater funding disclosures, more focus on basic research, and more open access publications.

Conclusions

This study provides a comprehensive overview of the most cited articles and highlights the increasing attention on PND. High-quality clinical trials with a greater journal impact factor receive more citations. However, there has been a growth in the number of basic science studies as an area of research with respect to the pathogenesis of PND.
