The Use of a Shelter Software (a) to Track Frequency and Selected Risk Factors for Feline Upper Respiratory Infection

Objective-Feline upper respiratory infection (URI) is a common, multi-factorial infectious disease syndrome endemic to many animal shelters. Although a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in shelter cats, URI is seldom formally monitored in shelter cat populations. Without monitoring, effective control and prevention of this often endemic disease is difficult. We looked at an integrated case management software system (a) for animal care organizations, widely used in shelters across the United States. Shelter staff routinely enter information regarding individual animals and disease status, but do not commonly use the software system to track frequency of disease. The purpose of this study was to determine if the software system (a) can be used to track URI frequency and selected risk factors in a population, and to evaluate the quality and completeness of the data as currently collected in a shelter. Design (type of study)-Descriptive Survey. Animals (or Sample)-317 cats in an animal shelter. Procedures-Reports from the software system (a) containing data regarding daily inventory, daily intake, animal identification, location, age, vaccination status, URI diagnosis and URI duration were evaluated. The reports were compared to data collected manually by an observer (Ann Therese Kommedal) to assess discrepancies, completeness, timeliness, availability and accuracy. Data were collected 6 days a week over a 4 week period. Results-Comparisons between the software system (a) reports and manually collected reports showed that 93% of inventory reports were complete and of these 99% were accurate. Fifty-two percent of the vaccination reports were complete, of which 97% were accurate. The accuracy of the software system's age reports was 76%. Two-hundred and twenty-three cats were assigned a positive or negative URI diagnosis by the observer. The predictive value of the URI status in the software system (a) was below 60% both for positive and negative URI diagnosis. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance-data currently collected and entered into the software systems in the study shelter, was not useful for tracking URI frequency and risk factors, due to issues with both data quality and capture. However, the potential exists to increase the practicality and usefulness of this shelter software system to monitor URI and other diseases. Relevant data points, i.e., health status at intake and outcome, vaccination date and status, as well as age, should be made mandatory to facilitate more useful data collection and reporting.

Clinical bovine mastitis in Norway

A brief description of the Norwegian Health Card System for Cattle (NHCSC) is given. The incidence of clinical mastitis (CM) for dairy cows in Norway was determined using NHCSC data recorded from 1992 to 1995. Incidence density (ID) (which included repeated episodes of CM in the same cow) and various measures of risk were estimated. The ID for the entire study period, comprising almost 1.2 million cow-years, was 49 CM episodes per 100 cow-years at risk. Twenty-six percent of the cows with CM experienced at least two episodes of CM in 1 year. For the entire study period (1992-1995), the ID was 30 episodes per 100 cow-years at risk for acute CM (ACM). Annual risk of CM for fixed cohorts of cows that were at risk 1 January the particular year, as estimated by the actuarial method and accounting for the exact time of removal of culled cows, varied between 0.32 (1992) and 0.35 (1994 and 1995). Numerically similar risk estimates were found when using the density method for fixed cohorts. Lactational incidence risk for cows that calved in 1992-1994 varied between 0.32 and 0.34. In herds of a size greater than five cow-years, the crude ID of CM tended to decrease with increasing herd size. The ID of CM varied considerably between counties, and was higher in coastal areas than in inland areas.

Production and reproductive responses to use of DairyMAN: a management information system for New Zealand dairy herds

To assess the benefits of on-farm use of a computerized management information system (DairyMAN, Department of Veterinary Clinical Science, Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand) on seasonally calving herds of New Zealand, data for 144 herds using this system were compared with a stratified random sample of 294 herds using only the centralized National Dairy Database system during the season 1993 to 1994. Demographic, reproductive performance, and milk yield indices were compared. Herds using DairyMAN had superior reproductive outcomes, measured as a higher percentage (+8.4%) of cows calving during the desired seasonal period (critical in this seasonal system) and a higher percentage of cows (+9.7%) mated at the optimal time to achieve a concentrated calving in the following year. Multiple analysis of covariance was used to differentiate effects. The superior performance was not associated with differences in some of the more commonly used reproductive indices (efficiency of estrus detection, first service nonreturn rate, and pregnancy rate), but the data used in the study do not accurately reflect true performance. Herds using DairyMAN had more information on breeding performance because pregnancy data were available and natural breedings were recorded for a longer period. With cows of equivalent genetic merit, herds using DairyMAN produced more milk (+1.2 L/d per cow) indicating that users achieved better management of the herd through improved attention to managerial details. This improved production was associated with the adoption of DairyMAN but is not shown by this study to be a direct consequence of it. DairyMAN user herds were larger (245 cows) than were herds not using the system (181 cows), but this difference did not significantly affect the various outcomes measured.

The production system and disease incidence in a national random longitudinal study of Swiss dairy herds

A prospective longitudinal observational study based on a stratified random sample of 113 Swiss dairy farms was conducted between April 1993 and July 1994 with the following objectives: (i) to provide statistically valid estimates of disease frequency in the Swiss dairy cow population, and (ii) to evaluate the feasibility and quality of an intensive farm-based data recording system. During the 15-month study period, farmers were asked to record every health and management event related to their cattle herd. This information was mailed back to the study centre at fortnightly intervals. Additionally, farms were visited regularly to verify received data and to discuss specific problems. During these farm visits, management data were recorded using questionnaires. A complete data set of individual animal events with a total observation time of about 1740 cow-years and 275 calf-years was collected and disease-incidence measures were calculated. The most frequent events were reproductive disorders and udder diseases, followed by lameness and metabolic disorders. Experience with the data collection technique used in this study suggests that a farm-based system is effective and reliable, as long as good contact with the farmers is maintained, and incentives to stimulate their motivation are provided.
