Wetting Behavior of a Three-Phase System in Contact with a Surface

We extend the Cahn-Landau-de Gennes mean field theory of wetting in binary mixtures to understand the wetting thermodynamics of a three phase system (e.g., polymer dispersed liquid crystals or polymer-colloid mixtures) that is in contact with an external surface, which prefers one of the phases. Using a model free-energy, which has three minima in its landscape, we show that as the central minimum becomes more stable compared to the remaining ones, the bulk phase diagram encounters a triple point and then bifurcates and we observe a novel non-monotonic dependence of the surface tension as a function of the stability of the central minimum. We show that this non-monotonicity in surface tension is associated with a complete to partial wetting transition. We obtain the complete wetting phase behavior as a function of phase stability and the surface interaction parameters when the system is close to the bulk triple point. The model free-energy that we use is qualitatively similar to that of a renormalized free energy, which arises in the context of polymer-liquid crystal mixtures. Finally, we study the thermodynamics of wetting for an explicit polymer-liquid crystal mixture and show that its thermodynamics is similar to that of our model free-energy.

Dynamic arrest of nematic liquid-crystal colloid networks

We report interesting self-assembly structures of nematic liquid-crystal colloid (NLCC) networks, which are arrested during cooling from the isotropic temperature to room temperature. The NLCC is composed of sterically stabilized colloidal particles and a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with nematic-isotropic transition temperature (T_{NI}) that is much higher than those of previously studied 4-Cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl and N-(4-Methoxybenzylidene)-4-butylaniline. We find that the structure of NLCCs depends on T(NI), cooling rates, and boundary conditions, varying from cellular network to hierarchical fern structures in different length scales. Our time-lapse study shows that the transition from the cellular network to the fern structure directly corresponds to the transition from a spinodal demixing to a nucleation-and-growth mechanism.

Lattice Boltzmann algorithm to simulate isotropic-nematic emulsions

We present lattice Boltzmann simulations of the dynamical equations of motion of a drop of isotropic fluid in a nematic liquid crystal solvent, both in the absence and in the presence of an electric field. The coupled equations we solve are the Beris-Edward equations for the dynamics of the tensor order parameter describing the nematic solvent, the Cahn-Hilliard equation for the concentration evolution, and the Navier-Stokes equations for the determination of the instantaneous velocity field. We implement the lattice Boltzmann algorithm to ensure that spurious velocities are close to zero in equilibrium. We first study the effects of the liquid crystal elastic constant, K, anchoring strength, W, and surface tension, sigma, on the shape of the droplet and on the director field texture in equilibrium. We then consider how the drop behaves as the director field is switched by an applied electric field. We also show that the algorithm allows us to follow the motion of a drop of isotropic fluid placed in a liquid crystal cell with a tilted director field at the boundaries.
