On the Modeling of the Three Types of Non-spiking Neurons of the Caenorhabditis elegans

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is a well-known model organism in neuroscience. The relative simplicity of its nervous system, made up of few hundred neurons, shares some essential features with more sophisticated nervous systems, including the human one. If we are able to fully characterize the nervous system of this organism, we will be one step closer to understanding the mechanisms underlying the behavior of living things. Following a recently conducted electrophysiological survey on different C. elegans neurons, this paper aims at modeling the three non-spiking RIM, AIY and AFD neurons (arbitrarily named with three upper case letters by convention). To date, they represent the three possible forms of non-spiking neuronal responses of the C. elegans. To achieve this objective, we propose a conductance-based neuron model adapted to the electrophysiological features of each neuron. These features are based on current biological research and a series of in-silico experiments which use differential evolution to fit the model to experimental data. From the obtained results, we formulate a series of biological hypotheses regarding currents involved in the neuron dynamics. These models reproduce experimental data with a high degree of accuracy while being biologically consistent with state-of-the-art research.

Methodology of Recurrent Laguerre-Volterra Network for Modeling Nonlinear Dynamic Systems

In this paper, we have introduced a general modeling approach for dynamic nonlinear systems that utilizes a variant of the simulated annealing algorithm for training the Laguerre-Volterra network (LVN) to overcome the local minima and convergence problems and employs a pruning technique to achieve sparse LVN representations with l₁ regularization. We tested this new approach with computer simulated systems and extended it to autoregressive sparse LVN (ASLVN) model structures that are suitable for input-output modeling of nonlinear systems that exhibit transitions in dynamic states, such as the Hodgkin-Huxley (H-H) equations of neuronal firing. Application of the proposed ASLVN to the H-H equations yields a more parsimonious input-output model with improved predictive capability that is amenable to more insightful physiological/biological interpretation.

Principal dynamic mode analysis of neural mass model for the identification of epileptic states

The detection of epileptic seizures in Electroencephalography (EEG) signals is significant for the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. In this paper, in order to obtain characteristics of various epileptiform EEGs that may differentiate different states of epilepsy, the concept of Principal Dynamic Modes (PDMs) was incorporated to an autoregressive model framework. First, the neural mass model was used to simulate the required intracerebral EEG signals of various epileptiform activities. Then, the PDMs estimated from the nonlinear autoregressive Volterra models, as well as the corresponding Associated Nonlinear Functions (ANFs), were used for the modeling of epileptic EEGs. The efficient PDM modeling approach provided physiological interpretation of the system. Results revealed that the ANFs of the 1st and 2nd PDMs for the auto-regressive input exhibited evident differences among different states of epilepsy, where the ANFs of the sustained spikes' activity encountered at seizure onset or during a seizure were the most differentiable from that of the normal state. Therefore, the ANFs may be characteristics for the classification of normal and seizure states in the clinical detection of seizures and thus provide assistance for the diagnosis of epilepsy.

Enhancement of Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity in Spiking Neural Systems with Noise

Synaptic plasticity is widely recognized to support adaptable information processing in the brain. Spike-timing-dependent plasticity, one subtype of plasticity, can lead to synchronous spike propagation with temporal spiking coding information. Recently, it was reported that in a noisy environment, like the actual brain, the spike-timing-dependent plasticity may be made efficient by the effect of stochastic resonance. In the stochastic resonance, the presence of noise helps a nonlinear system in amplifying a weak (under barrier) signal. However, previous studies have ignored the full variety of spiking patterns and many relevant factors in neural dynamics. Thus, in order to prove the physiological possibility for the enhancement of spike-timing-dependent plasticity by stochastic resonance, it is necessary to demonstrate that this stochastic resonance arises in realistic cortical neural systems. In this study, we evaluate this stochastic resonance phenomenon in the realistic cortical neural system described by the Izhikevich neuron model and compare the characteristics of typical spiking patterns of regular spiking, intrinsically bursting and chattering experimentally observed in the cortex.
