Arbitrary Scale Super-Resolution for Medical Images

Single image super-resolution (SISR) aims to obtain a high-resolution output from one low-resolution image. Currently, deep learning-based SISR approaches have been widely discussed in medical image processing, because of their potential to achieve high-quality, high spatial resolution images without the cost of additional scans. However, most existing methods are designed for scale-specific SR tasks and are unable to generalize over magnification scales. In this paper, we propose an approach for medical image arbitrary-scale super-resolution (MIASSR), in which we couple meta-learning with generative adversarial networks (GANs) to super-resolve medical images at any scale of magnification in [Formula: see text]. Compared to state-of-the-art SISR algorithms on single-modal magnetic resonance (MR) brain images (OASIS-brains) and multi-modal MR brain images (BraTS), MIASSR achieves comparable fidelity performance and the best perceptual quality with the smallest model size. We also employ transfer learning to enable MIASSR to tackle SR tasks of new medical modalities, such as cardiac MR images (ACDC) and chest computed tomography images (COVID-CT). The source code of our work is also public. Thus, MIASSR has the potential to become a new foundational pre-/post-processing step in clinical image analysis tasks such as reconstruction, image quality enhancement, and segmentation.

Near-optimal combination of disparity across a log-polar scaled visual field

The human visual system is foveated: we can see fine spatial details in central vision, whereas resolution is poor in our peripheral visual field, and this loss of resolution follows an approximately logarithmic decrease. Additionally, our brain organizes visual input in polar coordinates. Therefore, the image projection occurring between retina and primary visual cortex can be mathematically described by the log-polar transform. Here, we test and model how this space-variant visual processing affects how we process binocular disparity, a key component of human depth perception. We observe that the fovea preferentially processes disparities at fine spatial scales, whereas the visual periphery is tuned for coarse spatial scales, in line with the naturally occurring distributions of depths and disparities in the real-world. We further show that the visual system integrates disparity information across the visual field, in a near-optimal fashion. We develop a foveated, log-polar model that mimics the processing of depth information in primary visual cortex and that can process disparity directly in the cortical domain representation. This model takes real images as input and recreates the observed topography of human disparity sensitivity. Our findings support the notion that our foveated, binocular visual system has been moulded by the statistics of our visual environment.

Fusing Self-Organized Neural Network and Keypoint Clustering for Localized Real-Time Background Subtraction

Moving object detection in video streams plays a key role in many computer vision applications. In particular, separation between background and foreground items represents a main prerequisite to carry out more complex tasks, such as object classification, vehicle tracking, and person re-identification. Despite the progress made in recent years, a main challenge of moving object detection still regards the management of dynamic aspects, including bootstrapping and illumination changes. In addition, the recent widespread of Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras has made the management of these aspects even more complex in terms of performance due to their mixed movements (i.e. pan, tilt, and zoom). In this paper, a combined keypoint clustering and neural background subtraction method, based on Self-Organized Neural Network (SONN), for real-time moving object detection in video sequences acquired by PTZ cameras is proposed. Initially, the method performs a spatio-temporal tracking of the sets of moving keypoints to recognize the foreground areas and to establish the background. Then, it adopts a neural background subtraction, localized in these areas, to accomplish a foreground detection able to manage bootstrapping and gradual illumination changes. Experimental results on three well-known public datasets, and comparisons with different key works of the current literature, show the efficiency of the proposed method in terms of modeling and background subtraction.
