Review on recent advancements in the role of electrolytes and electrode materials on supercapacitor performances

Supercapacitors currently hold a prominent position in energy storage systems due to their exceptionally high power density, although they fall behind batteries and fuel cells in terms of energy density. This paper examines contemporary approaches aimed at enhancing the energy density of supercapacitors by adopting hybrid configurations, alongside considerations of their power density, rate capability, and cycle stability. Given that electrodes play a pivotal role in supercapacitor cells, this review focuses on the design of hybrid electrode structures with elevated specific capacitance, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms. Factors such as available surface area, porosity, and conductivity of the constituent materials significantly influence electrode performance, prompting the adoption of strategies such as nanostructuring. Additionally, the paper delves into the impact of novel bio-based hybrid electrolytes, drawing upon literature data to outline the fabrication of various hybrid electrode materials incorporating conducting polymers like polyaniline and polypyrrole, as well as metal oxides, carbon compounds, and hybrid electrolytes such as ionic liquids, gel polymers, aqueous, and solid polymer electrolytes. The discussion explores the contributions of different components and methodologies to overall capacitance, with a primary emphasis on the mechanisms of energy storage through non-faradic electrical double-layer capacitance and faradaic pseudo-capacitance. Furthermore, the paper addresses the electrochemical performance of hybrid components, examining their concentrations and functioning via diverse charge storage techniques.

Boosting the Capacitor Performance of the Metal Organic Frameworks Derived V2O5 Nanoflower by Cu Doping

Due to its ultrahigh theoretical capacitance, vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) is considered to be a valid candidate for advanced supercapacitors. However, because of the low electron/electrolyte transfer rate, the capacitive performance still remains to be improved. In this report, Cu doping is adopted to improve the capacitive performance by a two-steps strategy consisting of microwave-assisted solvothermal and postannealing treatments. The electrochemical results indicate that the Cu doping was beneficial for improving the specific capacitance, extending the potential window, and improving the rate ability and long-term stability of V2O5. Furthermore, the mechanism for the performance improvement is explained in detail by combining theoretical calculation and experiments. The results indicated that, compared with that of undoped V2O5, the larger interplanar spacing, better electrical conductivity, a larger proportion of V3+/V4+, and more abundant oxygen vacancies result in an improved capacitive performance. Our proposed Cu-doped V2O5 (Cu-V2O5) can be used as both a positive electrode and a negative electrode for the assembly of the symmetric supercapacitor, which can be used as an energy storage device for light emitting diode lamps.

Soft-template-assisted synthesis: a promising approach for the fabrication of transition metal oxides

The past few decades have witnessed transition metal oxides (TMOs) as promising candidates for a plethora of applications in numerous fields. The exceptional properties retained by these materials have rendered them of paramount emphasis as functional materials. Thus, the controlled and scalable synthesis of transition metal oxides with desired properties has received enormous attention. Out of different top-down and bottom-up approaches, template-assisted synthesis predominates as an adept approach for the facile synthesis of transition metal oxides, owing to its phenomenal ability for morphological and physicochemical tuning. This review presents a comprehensive examination of the recent advances in the soft-template-assisted synthesis of TMOs, focusing on the morphological and physicochemical tuning aided by different soft-templates. The promising applications of TMOs are explained in detail, emphasizing those with excellent performances.
